Historia
First published in 1869, Lorna Doone is the story of John Ridd, a farmer who finds love amid the religious and social turmoil of 17th-century England. He is just a boy when his father is slain by the Doones, a lawless clan inhabiting wild Exmoor on the border of Somerset and Devon. Seized by curiosity and a sense of adventure, he makes his way to the valley of the Doones, where he is discovered by the beautiful Lorna.

Beautiful and poetic
Revisado: 09-11-24
This story is full of depth and beauty. I love the reading of it, except that the narrator's voice can get low and hard to hear at a few points. I highly recommend for a classic love story, and for a story of a simple life in the 1600s. It left me feeling inspired and close to tears at the end.

Historia
Anthony Hope was constrained to return to the fictional land of Ruritania by an appreciative public who wanted more swashbuckling and derring-do from the hero Rudolph and more Machiavellian moustache twirling from the suave villain Rupert. The author came up with a literary construction which ensured he would never again have to visit fictional Ruritania - but nothing he subsequently wrote appealed as much as the two Zenda stories.

great author, great story

Really enjoyable, action packed, story of honor. It was narrated acceptably, pretty well actually, but having listened to first part of the story with a different, younger sounding narrator, it was hard to transition to the older, gruffer sounding voice.

Poor narration and poor story
Revisado: 12-28-23
The narration was hard to listen to, something like what you would expect for the reading of a children's book in the 50s. The story was very slow to become interesting - for me, about 7 hours before I had finally had interest. Then the ending - ugh - why did I waste my time listening to it to have the book end like that! Horrible.

almost discontinued because of the narration.
Revisado: 06-25-23
The story is good and encouraging. It has much to say in favor valor, courage, honesty, simplicity, wisdom, kindness, etc.
Two problems:
1) The narration is one of the worst I've ever listened to - very much Mr Rogers-esque throughout the whole story. I nearly couldn't listen to the book, but kept reminding myself that I received the story without spending a credit, and as it is aimed toward a younger audience maybe the reading of it was intentional.
2) There are two to three sentences midway through the story that I am sure would be considered highly offensive/racist... where the Britons are encountering some of African slaves for the first time. I understand given that the novel was written in earlier day and with the intention of reflecting an even earlier day. However, if I had African American children, I would not want them to hear someone who looks like them described in such horribly derogatory ways.

excellently narrated
Revisado: 04-17-23
This is a very sweet tale, capturing the simple pleasures and blessings in life. It was narrated perfectly, with the reader taking on characteristics of each role like a perfectly fitting glove. Excellent narration is what tipped me to a five star overall reading! I confess that I would have liked the book far better if it didn't say "G*d" so very frequently... every time I hear the Name spoken in vain, it throws and dismays me, and they're quite a few to suffer through here. But, still managed to be a very nice book to listen to.

Based on the true story of Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone for almost five years on an uninhabited island off the coast of Chile, The Mysterious Island is considered by many to be Jules Verne’s masterpiece. “Wide-eyed mid-nineteenth-century humanistic optimism in a breezy, blissfully readable translation by Stump” (Kirkus Reviews), here is the enthralling tale of five men and a dog who land in a balloon on a faraway, fantastic island of bewildering goings-on and their struggle to survive....

slightly more plot than the encyclopedia
Revisado: 01-22-23
Oh boy.. This is a long and arduous read. It only kept my interest just enough to keep listening, with the constant thought that I should just move on to something else. The narrating was okay, I would give it a C-. My continued listening was made manageable only by fast forwarding past the most tedious parts. Yes, the science contained in the writing is incredible, and I was reminded of the greater hand of the Creator and in His supply of everything to sustain and better the human life. However, at times it felt comparable to reading the encyclopedia.

What can I say, Stevenson's tales are always so complete, clever, interesting, even poetic. This is another example of his skill as a writer. The narrating, for me, was a solid B or B+.

Waverley by Sir Walter Scott is an enthralling tale of love, war and divided loyalties. Taking place during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, the novel tells the story of proud English officer Edward Waverley. After being posted to Dundee, Edward eventually befriends chieftain of the Highland Clan Mac-Ivor and falls in love with his beautiful sister Flora. He then renounces his former loyalties in order actively to support Scotland in open rebellion against the Union with England. The book depicts stunning, romantic panoramas of the Highlands.

All words and no plot!
Revisado: 01-05-23
The narrating is what kept me going for 15 chapters! However... There is absolutely no storyline or plot so far. At chapter 13, I thought one was beginning to form, but alas, it has trickled off again into a plethora of words and descriptions. I often lose track of what's being said, even though it's read with great expression and personality! I wish I could have enjoyed it more, but I just have had all I can stands, and can't stands no more! Time to return this title!
