Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Wonderful Book, Annoying Secondary Reader
Revisado: 06-06-19
The story is absolutely amazing; a true Sanderson masterpiece. Kate Reading's performance leaves a bit to be desired, though. She reads with such clipped consonants that she takes a bit of getting used to, and when she reads the names of characters and places that Michael Kramer has already read, she pronounces them differently, almost spitting them out with venom as if she's angry at Kramer, which is very very annoying. The story is worth putting up with her reading, though.

Historia
In the spring of 1348, tales begin of poisonous clouds fast approaching, which have overwhelmed whole cities, with scarcely a human being left. While some pray earnestly, there are those who hope that God's wrath might be averted by pilgrimage. When a group of pilgrims are forced to shelter at an inn, their host encourages them to tell their stories of sin, so that it might emerge which one is the best. And the worst...

So boring I don't know if I can bear to finish....
Revisado: 05-17-18
I've loved all the Medieval Murderers stories until this one. This one is like a poor imitation of Canterbury Tales. Worst of all is the narrator, whose rambling story of the English in France after Crecy is rivaled in dullness only by the dullness of his telling, full of odd pauses and a monotonous voice. The reader sounds like someone who is trying to put expression into his read aloud without any idea how to do it. Really wish I'd read the bad review before I bought this.

Historia
Seven weeks ago, a young American woman, Amanda Pym, faced down hijackers on board a flight to the Middle East and saved the lives of more than two hundred passengers. In a blaze of celebrity, she stepped off the plane in Damascus and was whisked away in a waiting car. Since then, NOTHING. The CIA believes she was kidnapped and murdered. Whose plans has the apparently ordinary young woman interfered with? The machinations of the mukhabarat, Syria's dreaded police?

New narrator ruined it.
Revisado: 07-21-17
The other reviewers who complain about this new, young-sounding, girlie narrator are spot on. Barbara Rosenblat is the voice of Mrs. Pollifax, and all her male colleagues. This new narrator makes all the characters sound like giggly girls, even the male ones, and is surely no Mrs. Emily Pollifax. What a disappointing end to an otherwise fun mature Nancy Drew-ish series. Audible, will you PLEASE re-record with the real voice of Mrs. Pollifax!!!!!!

beware SPOILERS at the beginning!!!
Revisado: 07-02-17
I'm sure I will thoroughly enjoy this book (as I have all other things Outlander) and have therefore filled in the star-max provisionally (I'll change them later if I'm adversely surprised) but I wanted to warn my fellow spoiler-haters right away that at the beginning, Diana Gabaldon herself (whom I normally enjoy listening to) is included giving a synopsis of every book and short story in the Outlander universe. I've read most everything but missed a few, so now--sigh...........--I have spoilers for the ones I've inadvertently missed. So if you've missed anything and hate spoilers as much as I do, skip over those first couple of bits and just figure out where the novellas themselves begin. Sorry, guys, bad practice to put that at the beginning!!!

phenomenal edge-of-your-seat horror murder mystery
Revisado: 08-25-15
I've only read one other Lehane book--The Given Day--which was great but didn't keep me on the edge of my seat. This book combines enough characterization to make us care about the characters as individuals with horror/murder and the classic whodunit mystery to avoid being cheesy and to get me to clean house until the book was finished. Narration was perfect for this book. Don't think I'd care anything about seeing the movie--it couldn't improve on this book with this narrator. (Someone mentioned bad stuff happening to children--a good caveat, since even The Walking Dead doesn't gratuitously off kids--but in this case the lives of the children in the story are an integral part of the story and actually constitute some of the most important tragic elements. Without spoilers let's just say bad things do happen to kids, but not indiscriminately and not like they would in some sort of sick Halloween-horror flick.) This book could perhaps best be classified as a suspense-filled Greek tragedy.

Britain, early 10th century AD: a time of change. There are new raids by the Vikings from Ireland, and turmoil among the Saxons over the leadership of Mercia. A younger generation is taking over. Æthelred, the ruler of Mercia, is dying, leaving no legitimate heir. The West Saxons want their king, but Uhtred has long supported Athelflaed, sister to King Edward of Wessex and widow of Aethelred. Widely loved and respected, Athelflaed has all the makings of a leader - but can Saxon warriors ever accept a woman as their ruler?

The best in the Saxon series
Revisado: 08-10-15
I've been reading and listening to B Cornwell's Saxon series for a long time now and expected the series to get tiresome, but this was the best yet. It recalls and brings my knowledge of Britain's history to life. Old and new characters are quickly and thoroughly fleshed out for their roles in this completely new phase of Utred's life and times. I truly enjoyed this book. Can't say more--even if you know your history to say more would risk spoilers. And the narration made the story superb--perfect voices, perfect pace.

Not up to Winter Sea or Rose Garden standards
Revisado: 06-29-15
I was eager to enjoy this one as I have enjoyed Winter Sea and Rose Garden more than once (and will do so again--like the Century Trilogy by Follett and the Medicus series by Ruth Downie and Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and even Les Miserables, some things are worth the time it takes for this woman to experience them again and again). Sadly the story just never grabbed my interest the way Winter Sea and Rose Garden did. Too much in the present, and not terribly interesting at that, at least not to me. And while Rosenblat makes a truly wonderful and hysterical Mrs. Pollifax, her voice is indeed too old for this character, and it really is difficult to distinguish the various characters. With neither distinctive voices nor memorable characterization, they all sort of blur together. I did make it through the entire book, and I didn't hate it, but neither did I enjoy it. Both by comparison to Winter Sea and Rose Garden and on its own "merits," I found it disappointing.
