Historia
It’s Christmas again at St Mary's and time for Max’s obligatory illegal jump. On this occasion, however, they’re right up against it. A loaded gun has been left behind in Ancient Egypt, and it’s up to them to retrieve it before anyone accidentally blows their own head off, thus affecting the timeline for centuries to come. And as if that’s not enough, someone (Max) has inadvertently poisoned Mr Markham. It’s hot, they’re running out of supplies, they can’t find the gun and it’s all going horribly wrong. Again.

I've no fault to find in this gem. And it's also marvelous because it captures and epitomizes everything to be loved in the Chronicles of St Mary’s.

The author seems as tired as the characters
Revisado: 02-18-24
This is the first in the series that gets lower than 4 or 5 stars from me. Important characters have suddenly undergone personality changes. Significant plot elements are sometimes either far-fetched or not concluded. But unlike so many other reviewers here, I will not beat up on the new narrator; I think, except for one accent issue occasionally, she does a fantastic job.

I couldn’t finish it. Excruciatingly dull. Lifeless characters going through the motions. Unbelievable dialogue. Tremendously disappointing.

Historia
The Gyrth family had guarded the Chalice for hundreds of years. It was held by them for the Crown. Its antiquity, its beauty, the extraordinary legends that were connected with it, all combined to make it unique of its kind. It was irreplaceable. No thief could hope to dispose of it in the ordinary way. And indeed no ordinary thief would dream of trying. But there are others besides those who make their living by robbery, others whose immense wealth and passion for collecting render them less immune to the practical considerations that must guide even the less honestly minded citizens.

Excruciating voicing; plot with holes
Revisado: 02-23-21
I will agree with many other reviewers: The piercing, high-pitched voice for Campion is downright painful. I'll avoid spoilers regarding the plot, but a couple of problems prevented much enjoyment. I was planning on listening to the entire series, but my nerves can't take that voice again.

This has to be a parody .
Revisado: 01-03-21
If it's not parody, it's the worst book of the century. The main character has been a successful international philanthropist, but she loses her keys throughout. The narrator describes a dead man's white ankles, but then says he's wearing boots. Another guy is shot in the chest, but it's not life threatening despite the fact that the bleeding won't stop. A cop doesn't take him to a hospital ; she drives him home, where the minister's wife performs surgery while they wait for an ambulance. - - I'll stop, but the Insanity doesn't. My only charitable interpretation is that Ms. Dunn has secretly created a female protagonist who has dementia and she hopes that this doozy will be read only by readers with memory problems.

Historia
As the nation recovers from the Trump presidency, many questions remain: Why was the COVID-19 pandemic so grossly mishandled? How did we get so politically polarized? What caused White nationalist groups to come out of the shadows, and are they here to stay? The answers lie the twisted story of the relationship between Donald Trump and Fox News. Through firsthand accounts from over 250 current and former Fox insiders, CNN anchor and chief media correspondent Brian Stelter unlocks the inner workings of Rupert Murdoch’s multibillion-dollar media empire.

A most intelligent and entertaining book!
Revisado: 09-05-20
I could not stop listening to this fantastic audiobook. Real journalist Brian Stelter describes the dangerously symbiotic relationship between Trump and Fox News within the framework of America now, and his lively narration of his own book kept me wanting to hear and learn more. Using vast and thorough sourcing, Stelter makes the reader understand how Trump and Fox both grew to power.
The audiobook is amazingly current, going as far as midsummer 2020--much farther than typical print versions that are just recorded after writing. Stelter is the first author I've read who has deliberately edited his audiobook to make it just as important as the print version, and I appreciate his personalized attention to the listener.
Stelter points out that Fox News--particularly the opinionaters like Hannity, Ingraham, and Carlson--has screamed "Hoax!" more than 900 times in the first six months of 2020, and he chronicles in entertaining (but frightening) detail how the non-reporters have superseded the real journalists. He is often laugh-out-loud funny but not biased or cruel. And I was astounded at his citations of all the times Trump has "plagiarized" Fox, from simple phrases to endorsements like Ingraham's of hydroxychloroquine.
This book has been written not to terrify or to mock, but to inform and educate. Its hard to imagine a more engrossing and enjoyable way to do that.

Historia
There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside; it's in the very distant city of Damascus. Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them, and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy, and a couple of mysterious ladies.

Not equal to the predecessors in the series
Revisado: 06-15-20
Maybe I'm just grumpy--everyone else has given it 5 stars so far!--but I struggled to finish this one. I had been eagerly awaiting it, having loved the earlier books. The locale is interesting, as well as some of the historical notes, but Lennox and the other characters just seem to me to be walking through a very predictable plot. The case of characters is varied and intriguing, but the execution of them isn't; Lennox's beloved, for example, doesn't do much except dither and call him "darling." One thing that sent me over the edge was the appalling, repetitive use of "I" when "me" is called for, e.g., "between Swift and I." The author seems too far well educated for this; I'm wondering if some ignorant busybody at the publisher's committed these horrors. One final note: Sam Dewhurst-Phillips is an incredibly talented narrator; not only does he have a pleasing narrative voice, but also he can do fantastic accents--and even credible women's voices. I will probably listen to any book he narrates, even if, as here, I don't enjoy the book itself!

Revisado: 11-22-19
I'm sorry to say it, but don't waste your money. Except for the as-always perfect narration, this book was not ready for release. It reads like a first draft, starting and stopping threads for no reason. There is far too much inner dialogue, and it is not always coherent. The plots are resolved simplistically and abruptly. McCall Smith is one of my favorite authors of my entire life, and it hurts to have to say these things about a book of his.
