Maybe helpful to some, not profound today
Revisado: 03-23-24
It’s true that the narration is awful and robotic. Aside from that, the book often reads like propaganda for the corporations it’s reviewing. In the context of 2024, I have rolled my eyes more than once, but it is important to remember that it was written in 2015. We knew less about Elon Musk then and corporate sustainability was indeed less of a common practice. If you’ve never worked in sustainability and come from a strict business background, you may find this book to contain some helpful foundational information. I’ve you’ve been in this arena for a while, it will be largely obvious or redundant. I listened to it on 1.3 speed to get through it, just in case there was a fascinating tidbit hiding within. I didn’t find one.

Historia
After fleeing an abusive husband with her six-year-old son, Tommie, Beverly is attempting to create a new life for them in a small town off the beaten track. Despite their newfound freedom, Beverly is constantly on guard: she creates a fake backstory, wears a disguise around town, and buries herself in DIY projects to stave off anxiety. But her stress only rises when Tommie insists he’d been hearing someone walking on the roof and calling his name late at night.

Fell flat where it mattered
Revisado: 09-27-22
I typically love the gentle pace of a Sparks novel. However, with the intensity of the secondary plot in this one, the primary plot leaves something to be desired. It feels oversimplified. I imagine the intent is to create balance between the two story lines, give the brain a rest from the secondary store line, but it felt bland to me this time. My emotions were so tied up in the supporting story, that I didn’t feel much of anything for the love story …which is kinda why we all reach for a Sparks novel.
