Historia
The final novel of one of America’s most beloved writers - a tale of degeneration, corruption, and spiritual crisis. A Penguin Classic In awarding John Steinbeck the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Nobel committee stated that with The Winter of Our Discontent, he had “resumed his position as an independent expounder of the truth, with an unbiased instinct for what is genuinely American". Ethan Allen Hawley, the protagonist of Steinbeck’s last novel, works as a clerk in a grocery store that his family once owned.

Classic Tragedy
Revisado: 01-10-14
Where would I be without Ethan Allen Hawley? Steinbeck creates a personality and David Aaron Baker gives it life. He's the most experienced, most wise, he finds out too late, his story describes the fall of a great household, and it ends in death. A paragon for modern tragedy.

Historia
My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Better than the First
Revisado: 01-10-14
This book is impossible to review properly. Instead I'll say that this book makes my top five along with East of Eden, David Copperfield, Kidnapped, and Name of the Wind. Nick Podehl does a nice job, but occasionally mispronounces a name.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Historia
This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

My Favorite Novel Heard Differently
Revisado: 01-10-14
This is an amazing novel and it’s my favorite. On the writing and the storytelling, I'll say it’s as close to perfection as possible. I was, however, disappointed by Richard Poe. Where Poe’s reading was clear and enjoyable, he missed the accent of Sam Hamilton. The difference between reading and hearing this story, is the magic of that Irish lilt. Steinbeck talks about how much he likes the sound of different dialects in Travels with Charley in search of America, and I believe the sounds of his characters speech merits our attention as his readers.

Historia
In this short book illuminated by a deep understanding and love of humanity, John Steinbeck retells an old Mexican folk tale: the story of the great pearl, how it was found, and how it was lost. For the diver Kino, finding a magnificent pearl means the promise of a better life for his impoverished family. His dream blinds him to the greed and suspicions the pearl arouses in him and his neighbors, and even his loving wife cannot temper his obsession or stem the events leading to the tragedy. For Steinbeck, Kino and his wife illustrate the fall from innocence of people who believe that wealth erases all problems.

Good Storytelling at its Best
Revisado: 01-10-14
The Pearl examines what happens to Man once he's received his hearts desire. I think Steinbeck was a little hung up on this idea (it provides a thematic material for his novel The Winter of Our Discontent). The Pearl also shows how hard it is for an individual man to fight an institution (much like chapter five of The Grapes of Wrath). Hector Elizondo performs flawlessly, an excellent voice for Steinbecks' words. If you're familiar with Steinbeck, then there is great comparison and contrast value here.

Best Thirty-Seven Minute Fairy Tale on Audible
Revisado: 01-10-14
Rip Van Winkle is the tale of an unhappily married man on a journey towards idleness married with impunity. Irving's a master of language whose created a lexical texture describing time and place. The narrator, Curits Sisco, achieved the appropriate meter and emphasis; however, sometimes he rushes listed sections inappropriately or slows too long for character's voices. Rip Van Winkle easily fits into the tradition of short classical fantasy. Other stories like it include: The Facts Concerning the Recent Carnival of Crimes in Connecticut by Mark Twain, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, or A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
