WHAT A WRITER
Revisado: 04-20-21
Elizabeth George is once again superb in plotting and taking the reader along for the ride. What she does better than any other ‘mystery’ writer I can think of, is to deeply explore what lies beneath the personalities we present to the world; whether in fiction or real life. Her capacity to make visible the unbearable pain behind cultural clashes or interpersonal clashes without diminishing the ordinary or moving into melodrama, makes reading her work somehow transcendent. She has guts. The reader comes away after an great story told well, a bit more willing take courage and to see clearly.

Historia
Goldengrove’s towers and twisted chimneys rose at the very edge of the peaceful Weald, a stone’s throw from the poisonous marshes and merciless waters of Rye Bay. Young Tabby Palethorp had been running wild there, ever since her mother grew too ill to leave her room. I was the perfect choice to give Tabby a good English education: thoroughly respectable and far too plain to tempt her lonely father, Sir Kit, to indiscretion. I knew better than to trust my new employer with the truth about my past. But knowing better couldn’t stop me from yearning for impossible things.

highly recommended. a page-turner that surpasses genre.
Revisado: 02-11-21
First of all, this is an engaging, excellently written story by an author I hope we will hear from frequently. It deserves the term PAGE-TURNER. It can be read without reference to the following comments (BUT NO SPOILERS).
The novel weaves together and echos several literary genres - the comedy of manners, romance, Shakespearean, and other historically literary and philosophical traditions of the times. It reflects and reflects upon the historical importance of religious sensibilities informing and misinforming the moral perceptions of the times. Still, unfortunately, relevant in 2021.
Historical prejudice against Jewish persons and communities, sexuality, the pervasive power of men, and relative powerless women are woven throughout. Yet, these observations are never heavy-handed. They flow seamlessly from the characters and story.

NOT THE AUTHORS FAULT
Revisado: 01-09-21
I couldn’t agree more with reviewers who note how annoying it is to buy an audiobook (that initially does not show up in my library) only to find that I already own it.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

One of top ten novels in ten years
Revisado: 01-15-20
Supurbly written, historically nuanced,Imaginitive elements enhance the history and the artistic unfolding of Virginia and the interconnected lives of the enslaved, the free African-American, and the bare brutality as well as the multilayered nature white society. I learned a lot about many things from this novel. One unexpected insight revolved around the miss-use of the land among land owners, the inevitable economic downturn as the land could no longer sustain large plantations, the inevitable push west toward virgin lands, and the added destabilizing of life among those enslaved as families were increasingly torn apart.

Calling all directors
Revisado: 03-13-17
What made the experience of listening to Mr. Churchill's Secretary the most enjoyable?
I knew it wouldn't be long before writers began to take up WWII as entertainment. Nevertheless MacNeal does entertain and I did learn more about the circumstances surrounding the war, particularly among the civilian population.
What did you like best about this story?
The painless often enjoyable learning opportunity offered by books whose main objective IS entertainment; but are nevertheless well written.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I am sorry to say I agree with the many readers that find the narration a decided distraction. However, I tend to chalk this up to the directors carelessness. The narrator's voice has exceptionally strong potential as pleasing and expressive. SHE NEEDS COACHING to eliminate the habits that distract from the performance, such as ending many sentence on the high note of a .question.

OUTSTANDING
Revisado: 07-26-16
Would you listen to The Traitor's Story again? Why?
This book was on sale so I took a chance and am glad I did. 'The Traitor's Story' is what I would call an intelligent page turner. Given what passes for literature under library headings nowadays, I believe it would fit even fit nicely under this label. By this I mean that it hold the reader, introduces a world that is foreign to most English-as-first-language speakers, and yet is also a world of familiar people and moral dilemmas that leave the reader rooting for actions one could not condone in everyday life. Further, it is spare, tightly and well written, and well edited. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would gladly pay a full credit.

SUPERB
Revisado: 03-29-16
A wonderfully written, intellectually complex, and insightful book. 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' is a cautionary tale about what it is to teach and what it is to learn. Unfortunately for those who would teach, our best pupils may understand and apply what we teach more than we realize or welcome.
