Should Have Stuck with Either Simon for Narration

As other reviewers have stated, I too would buy the book a second time if narrated by either Simon Vance or Simon Slater. I also echo other reviewers’ comments about the pronunciation of “Wriotheseley”. I know not everyone will be happy with any narrator. But I bet Simon Vance’s narration makes more people happy than not - at least, I know it makes me happier than not!
What will it take to get another recording with either of the previous narrators? A petition? Please Audible!?

Another Entertaining Inspector Rutlege Book

Many other reviewers have written good and informative reviews of this series, explaining the series' main characters and Rutledge's relationship with Hamish - his unwanted and hallucinated sidekick - so I won't replicate the efforts of those who have reviewed before me.

What I will say however, is that while I had an unexpectedly difficult time getting into this book, once it "clicked" I was hooked. This wasn't my first experience with this series, and I'm not sure why it took me so long to get interested in this particular chapter of Inspector Rutledge's adventures, but I'm glad that I hung in there as I found it one of the better of the series. I say that however having only picked the series up at the point when Simon Prebble began narrating, which is a significant way in to the series (book 10?). I'm simply not sure that I will enjoy the earlier books having spent so much time listening to Mr. Prebble's outstanding narration through the latter half of the books. He sets the bar high!

Consistent Characters, Far Fetched Plot

As the other reviewers have already pointed out, while Beaton's characters are their usual eccentric and entertaining selves, the "murder mystery" of this book (the plot), is far fetched and rather strains the power of one's ability to suspend disbelief. While it was, as always, fun to spend time with my favorite Highland police constable, Hamish Macbeth, I feel as though there are better books in the series, ones that do not leave you wondering "wait...WHO did it? Huh?" It was just too implausible.
But, it's not stopping me from turning to the next book in the series, as they're always reliably predictable in their fun characters, fantastic narration (as long as it's Graeme Malcolm) and formulistic style. As long as you don't expect this series to be something it's not, you'll never be disappointed.

I am always on the look out for a good series in which I can lose myself for countless listening hours. Malliet's first novel in the Tudor series passed all of the "tests" I apply when determining whether or not I will be able to immerse myself into the author's world. Wicked Autumn provides an entertaining cozy-style novel featuring the witty, attractive Max Tudor. Tudor is the single, charming village Vicar with an above-average mystery-solving ability due to his previous career. Malliet throws in a steady stream of funny and sardonic comments, quips and observations, which only added to my enjoyment. The narrator (which, as fellow listeners know, can make or break the listening experience) is, in my opinion, fantastic and is now on my list of top favorites. His ability to narrate female voices, particularly the elderly women, is quite entertaining...he has an uncanny ability to sound like a frumpy older English woman. Overall, it was a fun, easy, and entertaining introduction to a series which I can only hope extends beyond the fourth novel, which presumably will be set in summer. My only "complaint" was that it was shorter than many of the novels to which I'm used to listening, and accordingly it was finished fairly quickly. Oh well...on to "A Fatal Winter"!

Excellent Book, Fantastic Historical Fiction

The Whiskey Rebels is an exciting adventure into the workings of early American economics, and the forces that helped shape the nation. David Liss did another excellent job of bringing history to life, and the plot was absolutely captivating. The story is told from two distinct viewpoints, which artfully converge. The narrator gave a wonderful performance, bringing the characters to life. I am generally a fan of this author, but this was one of my favorites. Excellent and worth the credit.

Fantastic author, difficult narration

David Liss is one of my favorite authors and I have greatly enjoyed all of his other books. Therefore, I was happy to purchase this one as well, and looked forward to losing myself in another one of his stories. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case, as I was unable to stomach the monotone and strangely off-putting sound of the narrator.
Having looked at the other reviews, I took the time to preview the narrator in order to make sure it was a voice I could listen to for a length of time. During the preview the narrator seemed tolerable. However upon beginning the book I realized that the preview did not adequately impart to me the annoying quality of her voice. If she added a bit of inflection once in a while; if she didn't sound as though she was affecting her accent; if...well "if" a lot of things... I really, really tried to like the sound of her voice, and ignored the thought of "god this is bad" for as long as I could before finally giving in to the fact that I simply would be unable to continue (although I really, really wished I could like it).
I wish I had spent the money buying the actual book instead of the audio version, as I am fairly sure that this will end up sitting in my library without being listened to. What are the odds Brilliance Audio will re-record the book with a decent narrator? Fairly low I'm guessing, and that is too bad...
Oh well, at least I know which books NOT to buy because of the narrator!
