Editing issues. again?
Revisado: 03-22-23
Second book in this series to have serious and shoddy performance from whomever is in control and responsible for quality control from Soundbooth.
There are way, way too many instances of stuttering and skipping during recording. There's also constant artifact distortions when they rely on software to alter their voice. I've re-download this title several different times under reliable and strong internet connection and the issues occur in the exact same spots each time.
Story is over all good. I wasn't sure how I felt about this basically being ARK meets Litrpg, but it's over all a good enough story I've enjoyed.
Just wish Soundbooth wouldn't keep dropping the ball with this series. Last book an ENTIRE chapter was missing.

Not for everyone.
Revisado: 11-02-21
This story is about a man that was given a childhood that is only possible inside of a fantasy world with magic. Take that to heart and you'll enjoy this story.
The world building is done at pace with the story. You won't learn details until they are relevant and also pertinent to the immediate situation. This earns one star for story.
The main character is an enjoyment to experience. He is overpowered compared to any other character, but I find no fault for that. Not every story needs to be a flawed person struggling through a crisis. It's all the good of a Mary Sue without the bad, in its execution at least. One star to story for that.
The author sets a clear chain of possibilities for the reader to ponder, and doesn't give precise ideas of the inner machinations of the story. They let us take what we experience through the main character and piece out our own possible conclusions while still progressing the story in an enjoyable fashion. One star.
One star is subtracted because of how he portrays the women. One is just there to play off the jealously and anxiety of the main female interest and does literally nothing else in the story. Bad element and overall gets marginally corrected in later books, but still a point lost for this book.
Another point is lost because of the ending. I hate endings that end on a live transition. It's sloppy and leaves the reader underwhelmed. An ending is just ad important as a beginning.
Finally, the narrator is epic tier. Never fails. Always love any book he performs in.

So many words, but very little happens.
Revisado: 12-10-20
Exact same issue as the last book. Easily the longest audio book in my library but SO LITTLE HAPPENS! Main characters are in a constant feedback loop of their own issues and insecurities.
It's like the remarkable performance and progress they made in the first and second books got kidnapped and replaced with "complex" versions that are not allowed to improve at all.
If someone told me a character receives almost no positive development and is the whipping boy for the author for 100 hours worth of audio book time, I wouldn't believe they were the flagship main character. I don't know what happened with this author, but each book is a decline in quality.

I listen to this series once a year. It is a wonderful piece of literature and I will never grow tired of it. This is what brought me into my desire for literature. It was my first audio book.
The flaws that do exist, make this book series all the more human. It wasn't meant to be the best in flowery words. It is, in my opinion, the best told story across all 15 books I've experienced.

Necessary Evil
Revisado: 06-07-20
Mr. Kong wrote himself into a hard spot with this book. A lot of DEVELOPMENT happens for the main character of this great story, but that unfortunately destroys the entirety of the plot progression due to the mechanical nature of the development Mr. Kong elected to pursue.
These were things that had to be done, and I personally enjoyed a lot of the technical exploration of how The Land works when it comes to higher leveled characters. There are some instances where if there is an editor, they failed Mr. Kong and if there isn't one, Mr. Kong needs to enlist one.
Far too many times he ends up repeating minor details or restating the situation the main character is struggling with. It distracts the reader from the good of the book, and causes them to focus on saying please, quit repeating. A lot of reviews are proof of this. This is where a good editor is needed. Do yourself this justice Mr. Kong and enlist talented aid for your books.
Your books are great and the universe you are creating is expansive. You are reaching the point the legendary writer Robert Jordan started to make the same mistake, letting one part of the giant story drag entire books backward just to get it told.

Historia
The Galactics arrived with their Battle Fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined a vast Empire that spanned the Milky Way. More than a century has passed since the glorious day of Earth’s annexation. Struggling to hold on to a handful of planets in the frontier provinces, humanity is at war with Rigel. After the destruction of both our fleet and theirs, a time of quiet rebuilding has begun.

Revisado: 03-17-20
I don't know what it is but McGill is hands down my favorite character of all time. The stories aren't the best in the world, but they are told in what I consider remarkably well written. This will be the 7th time I've listened to the entire series and I'll never get bored of the books.

Superb Book
Revisado: 11-22-19
Best book in the series yet.
Anyone that argues the story isn't progressing or that Larson does the same thing over and over can't appreciate he's staying true to the character he's made and giving us a colorful and lively story. The action is always exciting, the plots are intriguing, and the emotion is always livid thanks to the wonderful job of Mark Boyett whom I consider to be an epic staple in Sci-Fi audio books on par with R.C. Bray.
I just hope that someday, eventually, McGill is able to verbally slap all the main nay-sayers and smack some respect into them. McGill deserves that much after 12 books.

Historia
An artificial object made of compressed stardust is barreling toward Earth. Is it an invasion ship? A doomsday weapon? Perhaps it’s the final response of Squanto, the Warlord of Rigel who James McGill has repeatedly humiliated. Or could it be from the Mogwa, sent to avenge McGill’s assassination of Earth’s Imperial Governor? No one knows the truth of its origins, but the object is huge and unstoppable. Whoever hurled this rock at us isn’t answering our calls. Every weapon bounces off, and the people of Earth begin to go mad as they realize their destruction is only hours away.

Keep it going!
Revisado: 08-12-19
This book started strong and kept on hitting. I could only guess about a quarter of what was going to happen before it happened, and for me that is a rare thing.
My only concern is the action is going to keep going so fast and hard that each book has little room for the secondary characters. I think McGill is due for a vacation book to help bring us all up to pace with how everyone else has been developing along the years as characters so the next few books that come out don't have to crowd in little details alongside the action.

Give Us More
Revisado: 06-21-19
Dramas are a great step forward. A full cast adds a lot of value and entertainment. Some of the scenes could use better clarity. Voices should always be distinguishable from the background noise, that is the only reason performance gets a 4, most scenes are fine but there's a few here and there that need better dialogue clarity.
This for sure should not be considered a half book. Too many important events happened for this to be considered an optional read.
The reason I'm giving a 4 for story is because of how they dealt with the cliff hanger we were given in book 7. It's presented as a major story element in the cliff hanger, only to be talked about after the fact it was resolved off script, further you should never end a full books story narrative with a half book. It forces the book to be a critical book you half to read. Not everyone will feel justified paying full value for half a book.
RC Bray takes this all home, too. Legendary man that stands out in a full cast.
