Historia
Cotton Malone is on the hunt for a forgotten 16th century Pledge of Christ—a sworn promise made by Pope Julius II that evidences a monetary debt owed by the Vatican, still valid after five centuries—now worth in the trillions of dollars. But collecting that debt centers around what happened to the famed Medici of Florence—a family that history says died out, without heirs, centuries ago. Who will become the next prime minister of Italy, and who will be the next pope? Finding answers proves difficult until Cotton realizes that everything hinges on when, and if, the Medici return.

Good- not great
Revisado: 02-26-25
Love Scott Brick’s narration! This just didn’t seem to be up to Berry’s high standard. Wordy and hard to follow in many places. The story just didn’t seem to have much “meat” to it.

Historia
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Pendergast with a British Accent?

Loved the book - loved the narration UNTIL Agent Pendergast made his appearance. His fine New Orleans accent was mutilated to sound like a Londoner.

Historia
At the height of WWII, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds - a Texan athlete with German roots, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman, an orphaned fashion designer, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer - all answer the call of duty, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately, in a group code-named Dragonfly.

Why change narrators now???
Revisado: 08-02-20
Loved the story - Alex Hawke is one of my favorites and I have been anxiously awaiting this 11th book in the series. John Shea did an outstanding collection of voices in these books - Simon Vance (who I normally enjoy) seemed to have a difficult time ! I t was hard to differentiate the characters read by him, especially Stokeley Jones. Although this is a series I re-listen to often, I won't be listening to this particular book again - too painful! I look forward to the next Hawke adventure - and hope that John Shea narrates!

Revisado: 05-13-20
An exciting addition to to the Celtic Brooch series. Each book has been unique - and fascinating. The author's ability to integrate historical figures and facts - and make them believable- is truly a gift! I look forward to the next next book in the series. If you can, start with the first one and read them in order - they build beautifully!

Wanted to love it...
Revisado: 10-12-19
I love Khoury's books - but not this one. Once started, I continued to listen thinking that it would get better... it did after about 7-8 hours, I found it boring for the first half. The story line was really good, but far too lengthy. Perhaps it would be more palatable if I had read the book instead of listening to it.

Tedious & Disjointed
Revisado: 10-11-18
I purchased this book as a pre-order and was looking forward to the listen. After 6 hours I could no longer bear it! The narration was good - but the story hopped and skipped around making it difficult to sort through characters and multiple time frames. One of the few times I have ever really felt I had wasted my credit and was unable to listen to a book in its entirety.

Amazing story of Romanov Russia
Revisado: 07-21-18
A truly mesmerizing listen - anyone interested in pre-Revolutionary Russia will be intrigued with this story told through the eyes of Maria Feodorovna. A woman of indomitable will who embraced her adopted country with great fervor, she presented the ill fated Romanovs as real people, with all their foibles. I could have listened to more about them! One of my new favorite books!
