Historia
From his earliest days growing up in Canada, Deryck Whibley was a punk who loved music and couldn’t wait to achieve something bigger and better than the humble path that lay before him. Whibley was raised by a single mom and their small family constantly moved from place to place, so he was used to being the new kid, starting fights (or finishing them), and connecting with people who shared his sensibility for chaotic fun and loud music. Sum 41 was born of a group of friends who loved to jam, shared a DIY ethos, and were determined to be rock stars one day.

Couldn’t Stop Listening
Revisado: 10-10-24
Thank you so much for sharing your story Deryck. I’m so glad you had the chance to and that you’ve found happiness and health in your life. As a life-long Sum 41 fan, I was so sad to hear the announcement of the end of the band, but know that everything must come to an end eventually and that you guys were able to do it how you wanted to and were able to put past shit behind you. As an artist that is married to a musician, I know that the urge to create never stops, so I can’t wait to see what you make next,. Whatever it ends up being, I’m sure it will be great.

It’s easy to be yourself when who and what you are is in vogue. But growing up Black and gay in America has never been easy. Before Billy Porter was slaying red carpets and giving an iconic performance in the celebrated TV show Pose; before he was the Tony Award-winning star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots; and before he was an acclaimed recording artist, actor, playwright, and all-around diva, Porter was a young boy who didn’t fit in.

Shows How Outdated the Industry Still Is
Revisado: 05-16-24
Honestly I could have swore this was released in 2001 not 2021. Some of the language used in it and cringe stories told made it so I couldn’t even finish listening. I get that they are stories from other people, but you don’t have to include harmful words or blatant ignorance.

Historia
In his clear, empathetic style, Jonathan Foiles, author of the critically acclaimed This City Is Killing Me, walks us through these and other troubling examples of bias in mental health, placing them in context of past blunders in the history of psychiatry and the DSM. Diagnoses are helpful but not necessary, he argues, and here he offers a pragmatic and sympathetic guide to how we might craft a better and more just therapeutic future.

Interesting listen for those who don’t understand what having mental illness is like… though I did get annoyed with the amount of quotes from “unknown.”

By age thirty, Stephanie Foo was successful on paper: She had her dream job as an award-winning radio producer at This American Life and a loving boyfriend. But behind her office door, she was having panic attacks and sobbing at her desk every morning. After years of questioning what was wrong with herself, she was diagnosed with complex PTSD—a condition that occurs when trauma happens continuously, over the course of years.

I loved this so much. As someone that has C-PTSD (though coming from a very different background than Stephanie) I feel so seen and so much more optimistic about my journey. I encourage everyone to listen to or read this book, even if they don’t have someone in their life that they know has C-PTSD.

Historia
One of Billboard's 100 Greatest Music Books of All Time: The provocative transgender advocate and lead singer of the punk rock band Against Me! provides a searing account of her search for identity and her true self. It began in a bedroom in Naples, Florida, when a misbehaving punk teenager named Tom Gabel, armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar and a headful of anarchist politics, landed on a riff. Gabel formed Against Me! and rocketed the band from its scrappy beginnings-banging on a drum kit made of pickle buckets-to a major-label powerhouse.

Great listen, even if you aren’t an Against Me! fan
Revisado: 09-20-23
I feel like anyone and everyone should listen to this audiobook. Laura Jane Grace is so great with words and explaining how difficult it is to figure out what exactly it is that you are feeling, coming to terms with it internally, and then how much it takes (mentally and physically) to be open and honest with those around you. Everyone always describes coming out as “brave,” but when you feel like it’s all you can do to survive, it’s just that, survival. It’s not selfish, it’s necessary. I can’t even imagine having to be so public with something so extremely personal (especially at the time), but it really did help open doors for so many others and educated the masses in a way that I feel like so many other people couldn’t have. Utilizing that platform has helped more people than you could ever think possible. Thank you Laura, for staying with us, even through the times you thought you couldn’t. And fuck anyone that has ever tried to make you feel like a “sellout” for living the damn dream and doing what you love for a living, I hope you know by now that they are just jealous of your successes. 💖

An influential psychologist who is convinced that many important CEOs and politicians are, in fact, psychopaths teaches Ronson how to spot these high-flying individuals by looking out for little telltale verbal and nonverbal clues. And so Ronson, armed with his new psychopath-spotting abilities, enters the corridors of power.

Would like to get an updated foreword. Definitely an interesting listen, and I did finish it so that in itself says something, but a lot of the ideas and some terminology used in the book are very outdated.

Historia
From the author of Fight Club, the classic portrait of the damaged contemporary male psyche, now comes this novel about the apocalyptic marketing possibilities of female pleasure. Beautiful You is Palahniuk's much-anticipated satire of the emerging erotic thriller genre, a mash-up of mommy porn and chick lit à la Sex and the City, and fantasy lit à la Clan of the Cave Bear. Imagine if Ira Levin had a baby with Jean Auel.

Revisado: 05-16-23
Definitely a book about sex that seems like it kind of meant to be from a feminist perspective, but was obviously written by a man. Lots of cringe and uncomfortable unnecessary details. Could be extremely triggering for some (mention of r*pe, assault, etc). I would personally recommend others to pass on this one and check out his other works instead.
This is why Fight Club fans have a bad wrap. 🫠🫣

Must listen. A great journey of discovery of self, coming to terms with loss, and learning about other people’s perspectives in your own story. Also enjoyed the punk references and feel like the author and I would have gotten along well in high school 😅
