You know how some books just seamlessly translate to the spoken word? Well, Barbara Nickless' railroad cop series is a prime example. When "grasshoppers ping-pong" away from an RC bomb-defusing device, you can see the hops happening. That's just one instance of what I'm talking about.

A fair amount of credit for this level of engagement has to be to Emily Sutton-Smith, the voice actor who brings this series to life. I'm a very visual person and have a hard time handling most audiobooks. Aside from the written material just not working as audio, many readers either overact, are bland as hell, or they just plain suck at their job. This series is a perfect pairing of both stellar writing and excellent narration.

Yes, the dialogue is what some would call "blue", but remember these are US Marines. That's the way they talk. Speaking from experience, the author has toned it down a LOT from what normal conversations between military comrades would be. If you can't handle the cussing and crude comments, you're missing the point as well as the plot, which is a damn shame,

This book addresses a part of atomic research I've been unfamiliar with: the pre-WWII history of Britain's nuclear players. It describes the fascinating dynamics between Rutherford, "Old Prof" Lindermann, and Churchill, Lindermann's oversized influence as Churchill's scientific advisor, and Churchill's connection with authors Wells and Shaw. I'd heard of Lindermann before but never realized his effect on policy, and was unaware the Brits understood much of the relevant technology sooner than the US. The narrator has a pleasing voice and inflects the story appropriately. Recommended.

I listen to audiobooks rather than music when I run or walk. I chose this title because it got a reasonable number of positive reviews and I love nothing better than a good techno-thriller. Maybe it's because I was surrounded by cybersecurity for most of my 36+ year career in R&D, or maybe it's just a bad story overall, but this is about the most boring thing I've listened to in awhile. Definitely not a 'cyber-thriller', definitely not 'cutting-edge', and in no way, shape, or form is it a riveting drama. It is, in fact, more like a soap opera, with a handful of stereotypical characters (ex-Red Army octogenarians, hot-headed New York Italians, Southern belles, etc.) dealing with their personal problems and muddling along in a blackout, during which the electrical infrastructure breaks down. I kept waiting for something cool to happen, beyond what anyone with an open Word file can Google about P2P, DOS, failsafes, botnets, and misc. cyber hacking techniques. Got <halfway through and gave up.

I started reading this book in paper format while wandering around B&N one day, and realized about 1/4 through that it would make an awesome audiobook if done well. And what a success! Myla's reading, the hushed asides, the sound effects, and the dramatizations all make this a highly entertaining read. I found it not at all difficult to follow or understand. Ms. Goldberg's writing is divinely descriptive, and her premise is one of the most usual and creative I've yet encountered. Please give this a try! :)

This is by far the best audiobook I've ever heard. The story is great, the characters are super, and the narration couldn't be better. Being of Italian descent, I often found myself nodding at the oh-so-typical reactions and comments described by the author via her true-to-life characterizations. I even added my two cents worth aloud, in true Italian fashion! There's so much that's offered here, since the story is set at a time when people took real pride in their work, families were bound by loyalty, and old values/traditions still mattered. There's also an added bonus of a VERY authentic Sicilian sesame cookie recipe that's not to be missed! :)
