By that I'm talking about how people have seen ol' Phil lo these many years. Okay, maybe he WAS everywhere in the 80's, but that's only because he was a workaholic. Phil's "No Jacket Required" tour was my second concert out of 150 in my life. I've seen Genesis twice ('87 and the '07 reunion and rather wish they would have ended it after '07; disconcerting to see Phil in the physical shape he's in now going out on the road with Tony and Mike one last time...). Phil was the man for me in high school. Now in my 50's he is again. Good storytelling, here. So glad he read his own book, as well.

Going in on this, I had read some of the reviews on iTunes and Stitcher, getting an idea of what this show was about: YA audio drama, mysterious supernatural (?) element, and "where's Season 2, Wondery". Truth be told, I a) only leave reviews if they're worth four to five stars, and b) don't read reviews from other Audible listeners, we're such a subjective bunch and truly, some reviewers really don't know what they're talking about when they think they do. With this show, I went off of a recommendation, and some of the early iTunes reviews.

Honestly I am very glad I did. Because what I wasn't expecting was to hear a character study. It's a slow burn with some of the relationships, especially amongst the high school students in Amanda's world, but it's very well written and well acted (and Julia Whelan's in it, who I adore). What baffles the mind is why a Season 2 hasn't been made yet. Then again Wondery's modus operandi seems to be short seasons to get TV shows made from the podcasts, with long breaks in between.

With that, a memo to Wondery: do more Sight Unseen; it would make a great television series. And while you're at it, let's have some more audio dramas from your network, period. Not everyone and his or her mother wants more true crime, especially in the world we're living in now.

While my knowledge of Python's contemporaries in British comedy is rather limited, one name I knew of was the Goodies. Never caught an episode, although now I'm tempted to go hunt them down after hearing this. Absolute surrealistic play-on-word fast-paced fun. This is what Audible needs to be doing more if they're going down the comedy path. "They defeated Kitten Kong! They stuffed the Funky Gibbon! Can they save Parliament as well?" Apparently so, if only for one episode, with the tragic death of Tim Brooke-Taylor presumably putting an end to an ongoing Goodies series.

And I always knew that wiley Joanna Lumley was a Russian agent! Strewth!

Speaking as a longtime insomniac, I’m always looking for those things that will help me wind down my brain and help me sleep. This one of those things. In fact, I’ll probably listen to it again tonight. Sure as hell beats NyQuil.

There are a handful of books I feel that aspiring actors should read: David Mamet's "Writing in Restaurants", "Acting as a Business" By Brian O’Neil. "Sanford Meisner on Acting". Keith Johnstone's "Impro". I'm now adding Jenna's book to the list. Unflinchingly honest and filled with useful information, this is a book I wish I had had on me when I first moved to NYC 20 years ago. Plus, it's a fun listen.

Neil Gaiman.
Dirk Maggs.
James McAvoy as Dream.
Kat Dennings as Death.
Taron Egerton as Constantine.
Michael Sheen as Lucifer.
Brilliant score.
Brilliant soundscape.

I hope to God that the Netflix TV series never happens.
This was more than enough,

Now PLEASE do DC's "100 Bullets." Pretty please?

Okay, let me preface this...

I love Kate McKinnon. I love Emily Lynne. And I've been a fan of director Eric Martin for some time from his work in podcasting. This is a top-notch ensemble.

Or it would be in any other production.

The problem for me is the material, and that the humor feels forced. And when it's forced, its not funny. I remember the first time I ever watched the films "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", "A Little Romance", "Tootsie", comedies where with some scenes I literally burst out laughing. Because the humor came out organically, it was natural. Some people will probably complain about the number of swear words in the work. The swear words didn't bother me. If there's a reason for it to be there, then it needs to be there. But the material itself needs to rise to the level of the talent attached.

I don't like leaving bad reviews. If I don't like something, I simply return it. I know a lot of hard work goes into the creation and production of a full-cast scripted audio drama. Dirk Maggs' Neil Gaiman adaptations, the "X-Files" with Duchovny and Anderson, "Cabin Pressure" with Benedict Cumberbatch, the EC Comics adaptations I just purchased on Audible, these are exceptional works I could listen to again. "Heads Will Roll"? Sorry Kate, this one didn't work for me. And if Audible insists on continuing it's working relationship with Lorne Michaels and Broadway Video, fine... just make some funnier productions. Or maybe, just... funny, period.

I'll admit, I'm biased. I love audio drama, and as far I'm concerned some of the best productions I've heard have been on Audible: "Locke & Key" and "The X-Files" and the "Alien" productions. Just when you think it can't get any better, I hear "EC Comics Presents... The Vault of Horror!" And all I can say is they did Bill Gaines proud.

This production embodies everything I love about the old EC horror titles. The bad guys get theirs in the worst possible way. The creepiness is countered by just the right amount of camp. This is THE audio drama of 2019 and I can't wait for more tales from the terrifying tome that can only be found in... THE VAULT OF HORROR! HAHAHAHAHAH! (Okay, cue thunder and lightning.)

UPDATE (4/29/20): Recently found out that narrator William Dufris, who directed all 24 stories in the first season (assuming this is a first season), has passed away from cancer. Apparently this was one of the last audio dramas he directed. RIP Mr. Dufris. Ya did good.

Thank you David and Gillian. Thank you Mitch, thank you Bill, thank you Tom, Dean, and Bruce. Thank you Dirk, thank you AudioComics, thank you to the other members of the cast. Thank you Joe Harris, thank you Chris Carter, and thank you Audible.

Sometimes you gotta give credit where credit is due.

I'm actually looking forward to listening to this again! Now let's bring back David and Gillian and the cast for Season 11 of the IDW comics/the concluding chapters (which if I remember correctly features the return of the Peacock Bros. from "Home"). It may be our last chance to hear Gillian as Scully, so the sooner the better! And hopefully Mulder will take Scully's advice and call Frank Black. Meaning: do the "Millenium" comic book mini-series as well!

Would you consider the audio edition of The X-Files: Cold Cases to be better than the print version?

I actually read along with the comics (a first for me). Yes, it was better. Why? Because David and Gillian and Mitch and Bill Davis and the Gunmen were in my headphones, that's why!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

DO YOU REALLY NEED AN ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION?

Any additional comments?

When I found out this audio drama was happening I was elated. The teams responsible for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Titanium Rain, Locke & Key and Alien: Out of the Shadows working together on an American version of Big Finish with one of my favorite TV shows of all time? Oh, HELL YES! Good acting, good story, and immersive soundscapes... seriously, you can't get any better than this. Which leads me to a question for Audible: WHEN'S THE SEQUEL?
