I already knew that this was going to be difficult to get through given the subject matter at hand. This was an absolutely enthralling read. It had to be difficult to write as well.

I enjoyed the world-building of this story in particular. While the love interest is a bit annoying and pouty, the performer does a good job of distinguishing between the characters.

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD

I'm super disappointed in this book because this story world had SO much potential but it was wasted.
When I first saw this book almost seven years ago I was immediately captivated by the title: Mystic City. I love cities and I love fantasy (needless to say I love urban fantasy) so what could go wrong?

The characters are very flat and I honestly couldn't care less about them and what happened to them. There is really no one to root for in the story. All the villains are just evil for the sake of being evil and they don't really seem to have much of a motive for being so evil.
We're never filled in as to why Aria's parents are such assholes and why the Fosters were remotely relevant to the story. Nor are we truly filled in on the nature of the Foster's and the Rose's rivalry and why it was important to the story.
The mystics were my biggest problem. The blurb compared this book to X-Men and even though I didn't really expect it to be just like X-Men, the mystics are nowhere near as interesting. The story should have been about DaVita. She was remotely the most interesting person in the story and SPOILER ALERT dies for boring-ass Aria.

What would have improved this book massively is if it were told from the perspective of the mystics and not the rich, spoiled, boring Aries.

PS: I listened to the audio book and read the print copy. The narrator of the audiobook sounds like she's about 30 years older than the actual character is supposed to be. It was really bothersome.

I've been wanting to read this book for so long. I am so glad that I finally stop messing around and did so. This book is truly a journey. The ending is everything!

So I purchased the physical copy of the book about 5 years ago. I really couldn't get into it and ended up selling it back. Then I purchased the physical copy again 2 years ago and pretty much sat on it until last week. I read all of the negative reviews and was very hesitant but I'm here to say just read it for yourself. I'm not going to say I particularly loved it but I did like it. This book definitely delves deep into the history and mythology of angels, their origin, and the thousand-year-old conflict between the Nephilim and the angelologists and that apparently seemed to turn a lot of people off but that was legitimately the Saving Grace of this book for me.The myth of The Devils Throat Cave in Bulgaria was actually quite interesting and added a bit of history and mythology that I haven't seen in Angel fiction, from what I've read thus far. Angels, especially dark/fallen angels, are my second-favorite supernatural/mythological creature (my favorite being witches).
The toughest part of the book to get through is the first part (the first 125 pages). In fact, that was pretty much the least memorable part of the book.
The book also has a few parts that are really dull and feel like filler but the action kicks up eventually.
Overall the primary thing that saves this book is the depth of its mythology and history (the latter was actually the main complaint that I was reading from reviews but I found that to be the best thing about the book). I think people were picking this up and expecting urban fantasy/paranormal romance but got The DaVinci Code. Read for yourself and draw your own conclusions, especially if you like angels.
