Historia
Mars has always been the lesser twin, the shadow to his sister Caroline's radiance. But when Caroline dies under horrific circumstances, Mars is propelled to learn all he can about his once-inseparable sister who'd grown tragically distant. Mars's genderfluidity means he's often excluded from the traditions—and expectations—of his politically connected family. This includes attendance at the prestigious Aspen Conservancy Summer Academy where his sister poured so much of her time. But with his grief still fresh, he insists on attending in her place.

Queer Horror! Let's go!
Revisado: 03-14-25
I was recommended this book based on my love of Midsommer, and I was not disappointed!! Mars is an incredible character. As a genderfluid reader, I really enjoyed their POV and the way they navigated the space around them.
This books was a trip, and now I want to own my own bee hive.
A must read for lovers of LGBTQ Horror.

A Haunting Retelling
Revisado: 03-01-25
I love Sleepy Hollow, so when I came across this title I just had to get it. I was caught a bit off guard halfway through though because someone mislabelled it historical romance. I would say it is a romantic ghost story. It straight up becomes a murder mystery at the halfway point.
That said, I loved the relationship between Charlotte and Katrina. Their friendship and the very realistic presentation of their visions and dreams kept me listening the whole way. This is a title I could listen to again and again.

Weirdly Perfect!
Revisado: 05-20-21
Welcome to Nightvale the novel is a flawlessly executed audiobook. Cecil Baldwin's voice is soothing and familiar to fans of the original podcast, and the adventure within is great regardless of if you are familiar with the franchise or not.
Since my first listen through, Welcome to Nightvale has become a comfort listen, and put it on whenever I'm having a bad day.

An Interesting Mystery
Revisado: 05-16-21
I chose this book to listen to as a research supplement for one of my own projects, and I was amazed by how invested I became in the story.
The entire time you think you know what is going on, but really you have no idea, and the whole mystery is beautifully executed. Engaging prose, complex characters, and enough suspense to keep you listening.
The reading of the novel was good, and I can tell the narrator worked to pronounce the Japanese names and cities accurately. However, while I did enjoy the performance, it would have been nice to see a Japanese book narrated by a person of Japanese descent. Missed opportunity if you ask me.

Good Listen but could've been better
Revisado: 02-28-20
This book had the potential to be so much more than what it was. The 2nd half of the book kind of lets us down as it lacks the same suspenseful air of the front half, and the names of the antagonists hint at so much more than what was given. A bit of a let down there. Not sure how much research Nevill did into the Wilde Hunt but his knowledge didn't lend to the mythological storytelling.
The protagonist is not very bright and not very likable. It's one thing to being inside the head of bitter person falling further and further into insanity, but the repetitive nature of his thoughts, the circling of perspectives, and the long stream of an unclear consciousness failed to draw me in. He didn't seem so much psychotic as simply uncomprehending of his circumstance and unable to respond with anything other than anger and violence.
The author also switches from 3rd person to 2nd person... It's rather jarring, and I still don't quite know if it was a successful transition method or not.
As far as narration goes, it was alright. It was a touch strange how he pronounced a few things. Sadly his Swedish accent came through as being rather difficult to comprehend and a lot of conversation was lost due to that.

Historia
When we were children, we dreamed of being heroes. We wanted to slay dragons and defeat the monsters that scared us. As we grew older, we were forced to try and find our monsters. We had been told they would be easy to spot. Monsters had too much teeth, too much fur, too much size. These were lies. We stopped wanting to be heroes. We started to want to be more, to be too much. We wanted, needed, more than the world could give us. We wanted more than what we were told we should be. We wanted to become monsters.

Hire a Spanish-speaking narrator next time
Revisado: 09-06-19
Loved the stories in this collection, and for the most part I enjoyed the narration. But it really irks me that they hired a narrator who clearly does not speak Spanish to narrate stories with Spanish excerpts. The broken delivery really destroyed the atmosphere of the story, and it is disappointing that they did not hire someone who could recite Spanish as well as they recite English to narrate a collection of stories written by a Hispanic/Latin author that featured Spanish writing.
