Historia
On December 8, 1941, just five hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japanese planes attacked a remote US outpost in the westernmost reaches of the Pacific. It was the beginning of an incredible 16-day fight for Wake Island, a tiny but strategically valuable dot in the ocean. Unprepared for the stunning assault, the small battalion was dangerously outnumbered and outgunned. But they compensated with a surplus of bravery and perseverance, waging an extraordinary battle against all odds.

Historia
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Engaging and entertaining
Revisado: 01-29-19
When you see the title of the book even if you know of Bill Bryson you think this book can’t be worth the listen.
However Mr Bryson has a way making the most innocuous, every day, normal, seinfeldesque experience so interesting and entertaining.
I wanted to be there, I felt like I was there and couldn’t wait to hear what happened next.
I will definitely look up another Bryson title.

Historia
Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

Long and detailed but worth it.
Revisado: 11-12-18
A very detailed history with all the pertinent physicists and they were paramount in the making and discovering of how to achieve this undertaking. Some other reviewers have noted the speakers limitations and errors but I had not problem with him at all, even at 1.5 times normal speed. It is long and an abridged version would be just as good and likely more read, but I enjoyed learning of all the different players and how they interacted with each other and how they were instrumental in making the bomb, which as many of the earliest scientists such Einstein and Bohr, thought would be impossible prior to the outbreak of WW2. Prior to this book, I had read and listened to several WW2 titles including those on the bomb, but Richard Rhodes is an excellent writer and I plan to research his other titles. Its obvious the work and research that went into this book was exhaustive.
