Nice to hear the author's voice again. This book doesn't pretend to be a biography, just some reflections on different episodes of his life.

As a popular history of some medieval queens, the author has to stretch a bit to unveil the lives of these women; there just aren't a lot of records about them. That said, I did feel the author took too many liberties when it came to assumption of emotion and motivation, e.g. "Beatrice must have felt..." It was hard to see how such liberties would be based on any sources. The author did quote contemporary and near-contemporary sources throughout the book, but these largely comment on events and actions, rather than feelings. As an audiobook, I got a little lost at times jumping between kingdoms. The book is largely chronological.

Western-centric content. Narration is dull.

My biggest issue with this book was the Western-centric way of looking at this history. The author made some effort to note how unfair the field and Western powers have been to Egyptians, but the content really leans on what all these French and British scholars said about themselves, and glosses over the blatant exploitation of Egypt, the marginalization of its people in this colonial period, and how Egyptians were largely shut out of meaningful participation in Egyptology for decades. The contributions Egyptians did make were unacknowledged by the excavators and therefore by the author of this book as a result.

As an audiobook, the narration was a bit dull, so I couldn't listen for long stretches of time.

This book came up in my recommended to read based on my reading history. While I did finish the whole book, I did not enjoy the writing or the main character. In the Audible reading, the narrator also gives the main character a whiny voice, which made the character even worse. The character seems childish to begin with, her thoughts are simplistic and lack depth, and the narration just made her annoying.

As a lifelong environmentalist and lover of wildlife, I really appreciated this book. I have been to Yellowstone in every season, and thought the wolf reintroduction made sense. I have seen headlines the past few years about the conflict between human hunting interests and wolves, and this book helped lay out that history in the Yellowstone region, as well as providing great stories of various Yellowstone wolves and packs. I did grow attached to 06, and cried more than once in listening to the plight of these animals. I hope to approach my next visit to Yellowstone with a wider perspective. I think the author did a good job of providing both sides of the argument.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, I got this book hoping to learn about the actual work being done at Oak Ridge, and found it to be a jumbled account of daily life. In audiobook form, it was also hard to follow the jumps between characters.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I suppose the information about their work is classified, but I just wanted more depth about that.

What does Cassandra Campbell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did an alright job at offering accents.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

I’m a fan of the show, and have been listening to the audiobooks after each season ends. There are definitely differences between season 3 and Voyager, some for simplicity, but some I was glad of. The book portrays the character of Mr. Willoughby with a fair amount of what I would term racism, which I did not appreciate and I am glad the show didn’t do. The show also is more sympathetic to the character of Frank, which I prefer. The plot complexity in the book in enjoyable, and a lot of geographic ground is covered. Still a fair number of bodice ripper-esque scenes, but not as bad as the first book. Davina Porter is a lovely narrator.
