Great Story
Revisado: 06-22-23
As a child I loved The Wayside School books. Earlier this year, my great nephew wanted to try an audiobook because I’m always listening to them. I bought 4 to share with him including this one. Introducing him to audiobooks and The Wayside School series was amazing. He’s 8 and loved the book and to my surprise 43 year old me still loved the book. I immediately went and bought all 4 audiobooks in the series although as a child only books 1 & 2 existed for me to read. I can’t wait to introduce all the 3 great nephews to Wayside School!

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

A New Favorite
Revisado: 06-22-23
I was unsure when I started this book, if I would enjoy it. I loved it and am so glad it’s a series. I love character driven stories more than plot driven ones and this was right up my alley. If you want a book where “something is always happening” this may not be the book for you. However, if you like to have a villain you can hate and protagonists you can cheer for… read this book! Also the narrator was great.

Historia
In ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common - murder. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered. But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside ancient Rome’s darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life and death and what it means to be human.

Not Another Boring History Book
Revisado: 03-27-21
I love history, got a degree in it, but the reality is most history books are boring and pedantic. I had some concerns before I grabbed this book because Ancient Rome is not one of my favorite historical periods. My concerns were totally unfounded, Emma Southon did an amazing job writing this book. It is witty, informative, relatable, and at times laugh out loud funny. I loved it.
And if historical audiobooks scare you because you fall asleep through them, you won't fall asleep during this one. The writing is lively and the narrator was a fabulous vocal orator.
If you have an interest in crime, history, Ancient Rome, or non-fiction this is a book for you!

Cure for Insomnia
Revisado: 01-07-20
It's rare for me to fall asleep while listening to an audiobook. For many years, I considered the War & Peace audiobook the cure for insomnia. This has replaced it. I stayed awake during the Jack the Ripper chapter, but I have no clue what the other cases in the book were. I tried 5 different times to get through the rest of it and fell asleep each time. However, I can't say it was entirely the narrators fault. I also fell asleep reading Mindhunters also by John Douglas, despite being a true crime junkie. I just don't find his writing style engaging and even the narrator couldn't keep me into it.

Historia
Based on the rare and until now overlooked journal of a Renaissance-era executioner, the noted historian Joel F. Harrington's The Faithful Executioner takes us deep inside the alien world and thinking of Meister Frantz Schmidt of Nuremberg, who, during 45 years as a professional executioner, personally put to death 394 individuals and tortured, flogged, or disfigured many hundreds more. But the picture that emerges of Schmidt from his personal papers is not that of a monster. Could a man who routinely practiced such cruelty also be insightful?

I love history and this book was great. It offered a view into life, society, and crime in the 16th century and how one executioner never gave up hope of getting his family's honor restored. I recommend to anyone with an interest in history.

Historia
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

If you want an inside look at the pursuit of the Golden State Killer this is the book for you. Very informative and I enjoyed listening to the victims talk about the impact GSK had on their lives as well as Paul Holes' contributions to GSK's capture. While it says narrated by Jim Clemente, it has enough other people telling their stories, that it is more like an in depth interview with those affected by the EAR/ONS/GSK and those determined to capture him now that DNA has evolved enough to do it.

Historia
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Revisado: 06-15-18
When someone recommended this book to me in the 1990s, I had my doubts. It quickly became my go to recommendation to other people. I loved it. Some time ago, I heard the BBC production and wasn't sure that I would like the audiobook but Martin Jarvis did an excellent job with it and now, it has become my go to book for listening while doing other things (like cooking).

Revisado: 06-15-18
As I listened, I could picture Will Patton playing the part of Ret. Det. Bill Hodges. The characters were well developed. The story was engaging. The narrator was excellent. If you like a good detective story, this is a must read and King always puts his own spin on every story, giving this detective tale just a little bit more oomph!
