Historia
So begins a press release from a mysterious group known only as “The Five,” shortly after a vicious predator is murdered in San Francisco. The Five is made up of vigilante killers who are very bored…and very rich. They target the worst of society—rapists, murderers, and thieves—and then use their unlimited resources to offset the damage done by those who they’ve killed, donating untraceable Bitcoin to charities and victims via the dark net. The Five soon become popular figures in the media …though their motives may not be entirely pure.

Sandford keeps cranking out the good ones
Revisado: 10-11-22
Lucas and Virgil team up on this one. The factors that get two Minnesota cops at the center of a nationwide man hunt was a bit contrived, as was the central conspiracy that drove the killers, but the rest of the story was tight. I love the authentic dialogue between the cops and the killers in Stanford’s books are always quirky and interesting. Sandford also wrote a story about political violence and gun culture without declaring his own political views. Nicely done. Haven’t been disappointed by a Prey book yet. Keep them coming!

Historia
By age twenty-four, Letty Davenport has seen more action and uncovered more secrets than many law enforcement professionals. Now a recent Stanford grad with a master’s in economics, she’s restless and bored in a desk job for U.S. Senator Colles. Letty’s ready to quit, but her skills have impressed Colles, and he offers her a carrot: feet-on-the-ground investigative work, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.

Sanford delivers AGAIN!
Revisado: 04-18-22
No matter what else I’m reading when a new John Sanford comes out I put it down and dive in. Letty Davenport, Lucas Davenport’s adopted daughter, debuts as a Lucas clone in this page-turner. It’s obvious that Sanford hopes to hand over the franchise to the next generation, Virgil Flowers and now Letty, but I don’t mind. As long as he is writing I’m reading!

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Who knew there would be an audience for this?
Revisado: 05-16-21
As a science nerd and physician nearing retirement I sigh and bemoan the lack of science literacy of even otherwise educated people I know. The fact that Andy Weir’s science-heavy books are hits gives me hope! His books are terrific! This book is best appreciated as an audiobook, as becomes obvious after the first few chapters. Ray Porter is a real pro. He conveyed the various personalities beautifully via accents and tones of voice that would be difficult to imagine from the written word alone. Get back to work, Andy. Happy Happy More More fist bump.

Historia
Renée Ballard is working the night beat again and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out but then checks into the case herself, and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger. Bosch is investigating the death of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch.

Another terrific Ballard and Bosch
Revisado: 11-03-18
Great writing. Strong female characters. Late middle-aged man depicted as still relevant and somewhat open minded. Ballard is a terrific character open to a fatherly mentor who treats her as an equal. This also sets up an interesting dynamic with Harry’s daughter, Maddie, who was only minimally featured in this story. Here’s hoping Connelly keeps writing forever!

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Historia
Everything we now know about the universe - from the behavior of quarks to the birth of galaxies - has come from people who've been willing to ponder the unanswerable. And with the advent of modern science, great minds have turned to testing and experimentation rather than mere thought as a way of grappling with some of the universe's most vexing dilemmas. So what is our latest picture of some of the most inexplicable features of the universe? What still remains to be uncovered and explored by today's scientists?

Physics for toddlers
Revisado: 01-12-15
Lots of descriptions of fantastical theories of physics without any explanation for the methods or cumulative experimentation upon which they are based. To the non-scientist audience these ideas sound more magical than religion.
