Historia
From 1792 to 1795, George Vancouver sailed the Pacific as the captain of his own expedition and as an agent of imperial ambition. To map a place is to control it, and Britain had its eyes on America's Pacific coast. And map it Vancouver did. His voyage was one of history's greatest feats of maritime daring, discovery, and diplomacy, and his marine survey of Hawaii and the Pacific coast was at its time the most comprehensive ever undertaken.

Excellent History: The mapping of the West Coast
Revisado: 03-22-25
One of the most interesting books I have read/listened to regarding early exploration.
We all know the name of Vancouver. But who was he and what did he do? This book provides an excellent account of his history and what he achieved during his brief life. The book deals primarily with the mapping of the West coast of North America over several years (1791-1795) and the Captain's round the world travel.
The book also provides the history of the Spanish interests in present day Vancouver Island and Captain Vancouver's dealing with the Kingdoms of Hawaii.
After reading/listening to this excellent history, I have a new found appreciation of Vancouver and the history of that particular time.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Step by Step to the Civil War
Revisado: 06-10-24
Yes, we all know that Fort Sumter surrendered in 1861 but what about the events leading to that event? Erik Larson, in another masterful history, tells the history of the events leading to the ``First Shot'' of the U.S. Civil War and who fired it. Captivating from the first word the last last.
It seems almost insane from the vantage point of 2024 concerning how fast ``brother'' turned on ``brother.'' But is it really insane? The book teaches us history, as well as how fragile are the binds that make the U.S. the ``United States.''

Working on the case, LAPD detective Harry Bosch is reminded of the primal police rule he learned long ago: Don't look for the facts, but the glue that holds them together. Soon Harry's making some very dangerous connections, starting with a dead cop and leading to a bloody string of murders that wind from Hollywood Boulevard to the back alleys south of the border.

A very engaging police procedural.
Revisado: 11-27-23
As an author, Michael Connelly has the unique gift of portraying the personalities and inner thoughts of his characters. This gift makes his books rise above the usual run of mystery novels. ``The Black Ice'' is like a jigsaw puzzle where the picture is not really complete until the final piece is fitted into place. I read ''The Black Ice'' a number of years ago and the book got me ``hooked'' on Bosch. I recently finished the Audible book and I think that due to the excellent reading by Dick Hill, I derived a better insight into the complexity of the plot and depth of the characters.

Exciting Navel Fiction: Based on Historic Record
Revisado: 03-13-23
I've enjoyed the adventure books written by George MacDonald Frasier and Patrick O'Brian. ``Flashman and the Seawolf'' is a wonderful blending of these two authors. Not as technical as O'Brian and not as bawdy as Frasier.
The author, Robert Brightwell, tells a story which seems to be pure fiction, but by including historic notes within the book and in the afterward, he shows the truth can really be stranger than fiction.
The reader handles the voices of the book's many characters with skill.
I have become a big fan of this author and look forward to listening and reading the next 10 books in the series. I have already ordered the printed copies of the next three in the series. I listen on Audible when I walk and drive, and read the book when I have time at home.
Thanks to Robert Brightwell for his most engaging book!

Historia
Is Anastasia dead? History Professor Alex Balfour confidently knew that the daughter of Tsar Nicholas and her family had been executed on July 16, 1918. Of course, he hadn’t witnessed it with his own eyes...yet. But Alex had been having bizarre dreams, dreams so lifelike that he once awoke with mud on his shoes, with Rasputin’s sable coat on his back. Had he really traveled back in time? His rational, scholarly mind rebelled at the thought, until a beautiful woman comes into his life with a strange theory.

Engaging: Historic Fiction/ Adventure/ Time Travel
Revisado: 02-26-23
``Time After Time'' focuses on the turmoil of the events before, during and after the Russian Upheaval of 1917-1919. The protagonist is a history professor who is able to time shift (sometimes voluntarily -- some times spontaneously). I read ``Time After Time'' in about 1988 and never forgot its impact, nor its many characters. I was very pleased when I found that Audible had made the book available. The author has created a work that allowed me to feel, to some extent, as if I was experiencing the events I was listening to (e.g. being in a trench with a dying Russian soldier on the Western Front.) In its review of the printed edition, the N.Y. Times stated ``An extraordinary adventure in Time....''
I have since found out that the author has written five additional books involving the same protagonist in different periods of time (from the 1840s to World War II). All are very engaging.
I hope that Audible makes these additional books available.

The fall of Constantinople in 1453 signaled a shift in history and the end of the Byzantium Empire. Roger Crowley's listenable and comprehensive account of the battle between Mehmed II, sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and Constantine XI, the 57th emperor of Byzantium, illuminates the period in history that was a precursor to the current jihad between the West and the Middle East.

A Vivid and Informative History.
Revisado: 09-04-21
``1453'' is the most interesting and informative history that I have listened to (or read) in a long time. The book not only deals with the battle for Constantinople, it covers the political dealings of the Pope and the city states of Italy in deciding whether to send military support to defend the city. The origins of the Turkish people is also covered. Not a dry historic account. The author's narrative of some of the battles are as exciting as those found in a historical fiction novel. The reader is excellent.
As a follow-up to ``1453'' I listened to the historic fiction novel, ``The Dark Angel'' by Mika Walteri (also available on Audible). ``Dark Angel, while fiction, retells most of the historic events and people that are contained in ``1453.''
I recommend both books and I look forward to listening/reading Roger Crowley's other histories.

Vivid /Tension Filled: W/W 2 in the North Atlantic
Revisado: 01-16-21
I was enthralled by this novel of World War 2 Destroyers defending a convoy against a Nazi wolf pack of submarines. A deadly game of anticipating the invisible enemies next move. (If you have seen the 1957 film ``Enemy Below'' with Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens, you know the cat and mouse game that must be played.)
``The Good Shepherd'' is exceptional in that it not only tells of the various attacks by the subs, but it delves into the mind of the U.S. Captain and shows the mental and physical strain he suffers while protecting the convoy and keeping command of the other protecting Destroyers.
The narrator, Eddardo Ballerini, does excellent work in conveying the tension and thoughts of the captain. At times, I felt like I was on the Bridge watching the action. For me, only the spoke word can make me so immersed in a book. Thanks to Audible for making this book available.

Historic Fiction At Its Best!
Revisado: 01-04-21
In my opinion, historic fiction is at its best when the listener/reader is motivated to go beyond the book and track down the actual history that the book is based upon. ``V-2" is such a book. During the course of listening and reading ``V-2,'' I would research the history and personalities that the book is based on. Of course, I was aware of the V-2 attacks on London, but I had no idea when the German research on rockets began (late 1920's). The book also serves as a reminder of what and who the origins of U.S. space program of the 1960's depended upon.
Yes, the author, Robert Harris, has written an engaging and suspenseful novel set during WW 2, but ``V-2'' becomes more than a novel in that it explores a part of the war that is little known.
The reader is excellent and the time period is captured in the excellent novel.
I look forward to the authors next works.

Ben Macintyre’s Agent Zigzag was hailed as “rollicking, spellbinding” (New York Times), “wildly improbable but entirely true” (Entertainment Weekly), and, quite simply, “the best book ever written” (Boston Globe). In his new book, Operation Mincemeat, he tells an extraordinary story that will delight his legions of fans. In 1943, from a windowless basement office in London, two brilliant intelligence officers conceived a plan that was both simple and complicated - Operation Mincemeat.

Remarkable tale of spy craft in WW 2
Revisado: 11-16-20
Well done history. Excellent narration. While the main story is generally well known, the author delves into the complexities in actually putting the plan into action and its eventual accomplishment.
Some of the people who helped develop the plan are a surprise (e.g., Ian Fleming, etc.). And the ``spy vs spy'' complexity between various countries is fascinating.
Lesson learned: Not all battles or wars are won on the battlefield.

Outstanding suspense novel set in Nazi Germany
Revisado: 11-16-20
Over the decades I've read numerous nonfiction accounts of Nazi Germany (the most recent being ``Hitler's First Hundred Days'' by Peter Fritzsche). While nonfiction is informative, sometimes a fictional account conveys more of the emotional impact of what living in the time period was like. ``Corridor of Darkness'' is such a novel. The characters are sharply drawn as is the time period. I found myself taking long evening walks so I could continue to listen and not lose the momentum of the narrative pace. The reader does excellent work in his portrayal of the many characters.
A final note: As I finished the book last night, in listening to the afterword, I was pleasantly surprised by the author's comment on the events that caused him to write the novel.
I look forward to listening to the next two books in the series.
