Historia
A year ago the Kher Empire was forced to retreat, but they were not beaten. In Orion Fleet, they return with a new weapon. A huge ship driven by AI begins methodically grinding inhabited worlds to dust. This unstoppable enemy is without fear or remorse, and the Rebels begin a desperate battle just to slow its advance. Leo Blake takes Earth's first warship into space to find a counter to this deadly new attack. The Imperial Fleets take notice of Earth's interference, and they're intent upon revenge. Even if he wins, Blake might have doomed our homeworld.

Good stuff.
Revisado: 04-14-17
I've heard it before and I'll hear it again. Larson wastes no time and gets right to the plot. It's fascinating that I don't get tired of hearing the same themes repeatedly. But I don't.

Historia
Handsome, impeccably tuxedoed Bruno Alexander travels the world winning large sums of money from amateur "whales" who think they can challenge his peerless acumen at backgammon. Fronted by his pasty, vampiric manager, Edgar Falk, Bruno arrives in Berlin after a troubling run of bad luck in Singapore. Perhaps it was the chance encounter with his crass childhood acquaintance Keith Stolarsky and his smoldering girlfriend, Tira Harpaz. Or perhaps it was the emergence of a blot that distorts his vision so he has to look at the board sideways.

good book, but unsatisfying end.
Revisado: 12-27-16
this is a rather literary novel. It does have some genre conventions of Science Fiction and mystery. I don't typically enjoy literary novels very much, but I did enjoy this one. Unfortunately, I found the ending quite flat. It makes sense within the conventions of an intelligent and intellectual piece, but for the plot junkie in me it was not great.

Historia
Citizen of the Galaxy takes place far in the future, when the human race has spread out to colonize other planets. In a slave market in the capital of Jubbul and the Nine Worlds, an auctioneer announces, "Lot 97. A boy." Slavery is commonplace in Jubbul, and the sight of the ragged, starving boy, Thorby, on the auction block is not unusual. What does puzzle bystanders and Thorby himself is his purchase by crippled Baslim, the beggar who sits every day in a corner of the marketplace.

one of Heinlein's best
Revisado: 07-05-16
An old classic Heinlein juvenile. It's hard to put my finger on why I come back to this story again and again, but I do. It's full of preachy political diatribes and weird procedural descriptions of a made up bureaucracy that probably mimics his own youth. The characters are one dimensional and the protagonist is essentially the same as all of his others. Many of the plot points are oddly similar to those seen in his juveniles: the strange romances with women where the protagonist is too naive to see they are pursuing him, the strong support for spanking for children, the focus on life in the military. But the plot is so good and straightforward that I can't stay away. Most people who read his books love them. His enduring popularity doesn't make rational sense but if you read him you will probably be hooked.

Historia
It was wonderful to be young and working on Wall Street in the 1980s - never had so many 24-year-olds made so much money in so little time. In this shrewd and wickedly funny audiobook, Michael Lewis describes an astonishing era and his own rake's progress through a powerful investment bank.

rather short for what you get.
Revisado: 12-22-15
I read the entire book, & I prefer the longer story rather than this abridged version. This isn't bad, but for what you pay I expect a longer experience. Further, this is not Lewis best work. His later, more mature, books are a lot more fun and informative.
