My favorite period in English history
Revisado: 01-12-16
I really wanted to be intrigued by this book as I truly love this time period. While I'm pretty familiar with the events and people, I kept getting lost in the details. There would be flashes when I'd realize that the author had me hooked and I was There, with Cromwell. Then, for the next hour, I'd be bored witless. It wasn't the narrator's fault; he was excellent. Between the use of present tense and the prose, I just kept wishing it would be over.
I promise myself that I'm eventually going to finish this book, just not right now.

Historia
The Game of Kings: First in The Lymond Saga. It's August 1547, and unrest in Europe is rife. Scotland, nominally ruled by 4 year old Queen Mary, is heaving with intrigue - and hot gossip. The notorious rebel, Crawford of Lymond, is rumoured to be back in Edinburgh. The city is sealed, but such things never worry 'Lymond'. As usual, he leaves a characteristic trail of hue and cry, vanished contraband, and a drunken sow.

Disappointing
Revisado: 12-02-15
I've loved the Lymond Chronicles since I discovered them in the 80s and have reread them so many times my books are literally falling apart. I just couldn't take this production and gave up on it after about an hour. Samuel Gillies read this as if it were a stage play with an almost vaudeville cadence; it was painful to hear. Definitely wish Andrew Napier had done the narration.
The rest of the recorded books in the series are SO much better.

What a treat!
Revisado: 06-03-15
A murder mystery spiced with humor! I enjoyed the story and pace of the narration enormously. The narrator made the story and the humor quite vivid; I could put the book down. I hope to see more from both author and narrator.

Historia
In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

Boring
Revisado: 05-28-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not. Too much background and not nearly enough to move the story forward. I did manage to get through half the book but I couldn't work up any enthusiasm for the characters. Holmes was dull and flat.
Would you be willing to try another book from Laurie R. King? Why or why not?
Probably not; she just didn't hold my interest.
What aspect of Jenny Sterlin’s performance would you have changed?
Her performance was fine; it was just a boring book.
