The plan was simple. I would take her and hold her ransom to get the money I was owed, but my sweet Bree has her own agenda. She wants to dominate in a world ruled by men, but she needs my help. Her family’s rules state only men can run the business, so she proposes we get married. In turn, she would get the power she craves, and I would get my money and show the world I'm not to be messed with.

Absolutely loved!!!!!
Revisado: 05-10-23
I adored the easy chemistry between these characters and how kind both of these admitted killers were with the people they love! Can’t wait for books 2-… to be in audio format!

Historia
Jules Thornton didn't come to Ocala to make friends. She came to make a name for herself. Young, determined, and tough as nails, she's been swapping stable-work for saddle-time since she was a little kid - and it hasn't always been a fun ride. Forever the struggling rider in a sport for the wealthy, all Jules has on her side is talent and ambition. She's certain all she needs to succeed are good horses, but will the eventing world agree? On her own at last, Jules is positive she's poised to become eventing's newest star, but soon finds she's making more enemies than friends.

1st two books tedious, books 3 on great
Revisado: 12-31-22
Not quite a winner from salute to finish. The main protagonist, Jules, is tedious for books 1 and 2. I had originally given book 2 a poor review because she's so self-righteous and whiney. I almost couldn't force myself to listen to book 3, but woke up one morning with a wild hair and missed the eventing world so decided to spend a credit. I'm glad I did. I'm only halfway through book 3, but the girl is finally growing up and becoming more likable.
I'm now finished with the 7 or 8 (? Titled Home). I found this to be a Harry Potter-esque read, which is absolutely a complement! I hated book 2 and swore off HP series. However, it lingered in my mind and I couldn't concentrate on any other book in which I tried to submerse, so I had to get book 3 and never looked back! Jules and the story matured well, just like HP. So yeah, I stand by my original view of books 1 and 2, but feel like they're a necessary component of Jule's growth process. An amendment was earned.

The protagonist is a hot-headed know-it-all
Revisado: 12-28-22
I really wanted to like this series. I grew up as a poor kid in the eventing world, showing my $500 gelding, working in the barn for lessons, etc., all of which gave me something to relate to with this character. However, her constant whining, trying to prove she didn't need help from anyone, and unwillingness to even consider the need for coaching was just gross. Even olympians have a coach! She's completely self-absorbed and not a very likable person. I trudged through the first book and only listened to the second hoping she'd mature or see a therapist or something because I'm very interested in the horse side. Alas, she continued being unlikable until the very end where she may have finally seen the error of her ways. I want to continue the series because of the eventing aspect, but I don't think I could tolerate her for another minute.

Historia
I’m the only Dixon brother to step up when our family crumbled. When I took over the ranch, I lost everything, career included. My heart hadn’t been in it anyway. It couldn’t. A girl stole it a dozen years ago when she left, dreaming of a world outside our small town. Now she’s back. Different hair. New style. Kid clutching her hand. Wrecked by the man who put the ring on her finger. Not a trace of the Madison Black I knew.

By the end I was mocking all the characters
Revisado: 04-09-22
If unrealistic high school love is your thing, this is the book for you. I prefer adult relationships with open communication, realistic expectations, and understanding of mistakes. But, I did listen all the way through so even if I did so mocking all the characters, I didn’t hate it enough to put it down.

Ugh! It was awful but I hate-listened to the whole thing
Revisado: 02-23-22
The dialogue was extremely simplistic, but not simplistic in the way The Hunger Games was (which was an easy read for its simplicity yet still pretty exciting). The Dragon Kings was full of insta-love by teenagers and very lame arguments to authority figures that miraculously changed everyone’s mind about hating dragons.
The plot idea behind this series had serious potential! I loved the National Parks of the US being used as refuges for dragons, as well as the dragons having a political system determined by magic, but the story did not live up to the potential.
The narrator was equally as bad or worse than the dialogue. She read very slowly (I listened at 1.2x speed to reduce the anger at her) and many characters were whiny and nasally. I swear she pinched her nose to achieve some of the voices!
I only listened to the entire book because I was out of credits and days away from getting more.

I’m the right-hand man of the mafia king. She’s a girl with a past she’s desperate to hide. But I need something from her. And I know she won’t help me. Not willingly. She’ll need some persuading. Lucky for her, I can do that. Something about this girl makes me curious, though, and it’s more than the scars that line her back.

This was not a healthy dom/sub sexual relationship. Too much coercion, little to no consent. The narrators were good though.

Caught in one feud too many, he's on the verge of becoming a dead barbarian - leaving nothing behind him but bad songs, dead friends, and a lot of happy enemies. Nobleman, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, Captain Jezal dan Luthar has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But war is brewing, and on the battlefields of the frozen North they fight by altogether bloodier rules.

AWESOME!
Revisado: 12-07-20
Awesome book, fantastic series! I love the complexity of the characters; each of them having good and bad traits. The emotions and violence experienced by these people born into war was raw, but not gratuitous. I think all of it was necessary to tell this story. I'm only sad that I don't get to hang out with these characters as they continue their lives. I'm going to miss them.

Sophomoric, even for YA
Revisado: 08-03-20
The premise drove me to listen more than halfway through, then I grudgingly listened to the rest hoping for some dazzling reveal or twist. Nothing. I’ve no urge to continue this series. Even though the writing in books like The Hunger Games was simple, the story and main characters were strong enough to make up for it. That was not the case with this book.

Obviously, there are some differences, but overall it is pretty much the same. The narrator is terrible at male voices. But it wasn’t the worst book I’ve ever listened to.
