Good book
Revisado: 03-11-24
I can't figure out how I stumbled on this, because it doesn't seem to come up when I search Audible for more of Horst's work - it's only translated into French. Anyway, "Dregs" is the first in a series about a Norwegian detective name Wisting, and it's quite good. The small town comes alive, and the detective work is complex and methodical.. I looked for more on Audible, but couldn't find anything else translated into English. Prime has a show based on Horst's Wisting books, which I'm going to check out. That's all.

Amazing book(s)!
Revisado: 07-21-23
This is the first of three Winslow books to follow desperate, conflicted, obsessive DEA agent Art Keller into the all-too-human world of Mexican drug lord Adan Barrera. Read this and the next two (“The Cartel,” “The Border”), and between books 2 and 3, read or listen to Gary Webb’s fabulous real-life “Dark Alliance: the CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion.” All the books are terrific.

What a great book
Revisado: 05-11-22
Mas Arai is an 80-year-old Japanese-American gardener who drives an ancient Ford truck, lives by himself, sees everything while saying nothing, and tends to be overlooked and dismissed in the hectic world that is Los Angeles (which is just what I did before I picked up the first Mas Arai book - I believe it's "Big Bachi"). "Blood Hina" is my favorite, but I've thought that about each of the seven Mas Arai books at one time or another. This one begins at his best friend's wedding rehearsal, moves into a search for missing Japanese dolls, and heads out into the hot, dry and dangerous Imperial Valley to solve a long-ago mystery. Hirahara creates the world according to Mas, and it's unique, ingenious and delightful.

Naomi Hirahara's work is unique and satisfying
Revisado: 05-11-22
It took me a while to buy into the Leilani Santiago stories. I was initially put off by the reader, whose understated delivery caught me off-guard. Still, since I went through the same changes with Mas Arai, the 80-year-old gardener who is featured in six of her books, I stuck with it. Once I adjusted, I was glad I did. The laidback reader fit life on humid, slow-moving Kauai, and just as Hirahara created LA and Altadena through the eyes of Mr. Arai, she performed her magic at a shaved-ice stand on Kauai.

Historia
From the time she was a child, Mas Arai's daughter, Mari, was completely gasa-gasa - never sitting still, always on the go, getting into everything. And Mas, busy tending lawns, gambling, and struggling to put his Hiroshima past behind him, never had much time for the family he was trying to support. For years now his resentful daughter has lived a continent away in New York City and had a life he knew little about.

Revisado: 01-18-22
I read this because I saw Susie Bright’s 5-star review. Since I’ve always had a huge crush on Susie (and because I recently finished Hirahara’s Clark and Division, which I loved), I followed her here and she was right: it’s a great book.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Wonderful
Revisado: 05-31-19
Angie Thomas is a gifted storyteller, and Star her teenaged protagonist takes us through reallife family drama after she witnesses the police murder of her best friend. It was so satifying that I listened to it three times. Thomas next book - On the Come Up - is nearly as good.

This book got really good reviews, lots of them. The thing is, in my opinion, it was not a good book. Like omg, not a good book. Which undermines my ability to follow reviews and reviewers. Anyway, don't buy this book, unless you like the kinds of book that all those people who liked this one read. Then, I guess, get it.

Funny, sad, full of wonderful characters and the perfect dialogue of which he is the master, McMurtry brings the Thalia saga to an end with Duane confronting depression in the midst of plenty. Surrounded by his children, who all seem to be going through life crises involving sex, drugs, and violence; his wife, Karla, who is wrestling with her own demons; and friends like Sonny, who seem to be dying, Duane can't seem to make sense of his life anymore.

Historia
Surrounded by his children, who all seem to be going through life crises, and his wife, who is wrestling with her own demons, small-town Texas local Duane Moore can't seem to make sense of his life anymore. To the perplexity of his family and friends, he ditches his pickup, starts walking everywhere, and moves to a crude shack six miles out of town. But his attempts to go off the grid are far from successful, and he struggles with increasing depression.
