Lovely to have another story from a Chinese Canadian perspective. A very sweet romance. Slow burn, closed door.

Every bartender should follow one simple rule—don't go home with the customers. That’s been easy for me to stick to, until the night a cocky, confident, and sinfully charming hockey star walks into my bar. This sexy athlete is too hard to resist, especially when he makes it clear how much he wants the “sarcastic, witty, hot AF” guy behind the bar—also known as me.

Crossed the Line
Revisado: 12-07-20
Inappropriate Casting
Very frustrating. Not every British man sounds the same. London alone is full of different accents. Please find a Black British actor to do the voice acting next time. They are hardly unicorns. Whereas parts for them are rare as hens teeth. Why have a cast of a dozen and not bother to care about this?
Narrative wise the pacing and plotting was a problem. 95% first week together. A minute of distance and then boom engaged and married. Relationship stages needed to be more evenly dirstributed for the engagement to feel like the right conclusion and not a disaster in the making.

It was only supposed to be a marriage of convenience. Let me just say, this whole part-time lover thing was her idea. I’d have gone all in from the start, but hey, when a gorgeous, brilliant woman invites you into her bed, and only her bed...well, I said yes. But then, one hysterical phone call from my brother later, begging me to find myself a wife so grandfather’s business stays in the family, and I need a promotion with Elise. Turns out a full-time husband suits her needs too, and a temporary marriage of convenience ought to do the trick, until we can simply untie the knot....

Not an audiobook for francophones
Revisado: 12-06-20
If the character is bilingual the actor needs to be too
The story was well written and generally well acted but casting an anglo actress as the biligual heroine was a major faux pas. It would have been fine if the character was an American who learned French. Instead the character was a Francophone raised in America with dual citizenship. You can't fake that level of fluency with phonetics. She did not pull it off and it grated with every French word and name. Versus the actor who was clearly much more fluent in French. Please Audible, never do this again. It is beyond annoying to borderline offensive.
Don't get the Audible version if you are fluent enough to pick up on this.

Historia
Luc O'Donnell is tangentially - and reluctantly - famous. His rock-star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next 20 years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything. To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice normal relationship...and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and someone who has never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. He’s perfect boyfriend material.

50% rom com 50% realism
Revisado: 12-01-20
I loved it. Found it very well written and refreshingly free of clichèd expressions. If you are looking for rauchy sex scenes this won't fit the bill. It is heavy on heart and low on sheer lust. Great dialogue. Great relationship dynamics in all relationships. Parent-child, friends, coworkers, partners. Very true to life in how those interactions work. Running the gamut from supportive to dysfunctional to toxic. Definitely some over the top movie Rom Com worthy romantic gestures sprinkled in for entertainment. Overall 100% worth the read and I will probably now check out the rest of the author's catalogue.

Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Loved It
Revisado: 10-28-20
10s acroos the board. The story is well written with endearing characters. The voices performances were great and the radio play style was enjoyable once you adjusted to it. For being of a genre with a particularly limited number of plotlines (only so many paths to boy gets girl) it managed to feel fresh and original. Definitely an author I will watch for in the future.

For a very specific audience
Revisado: 05-30-19
If your problems are external this book is not for you.
I assume the intended audience is perfectionists who are the architects of their own misery. Boxed in by expectations and obsessed with appearance and the opinions of strangers. That was certainly who the composites were about.
As someone whose issues are external it was highly triggering to listen to a book written to address the problems of prividelge.
If you don't have a supportive spouse, some high acheiving kids, an extensive network of longtime long distance friends, a second network of newer mom friends, and a therapist this is probably not going to be your book either.

Historia
Ancient sages compared the human mind to a monkey: constantly chattering, hopping from branch to branch - endlessly moving from fear to safety. If you are one of the millions of people whose life is affected by anxiety, you are familiar with this process. Unfortunately, you can't switch off the "monkey mind", but you can stop feeding the monkey - or stop rewarding it by avoiding the things you fear.

Loved it! It is very direct. It refers frequently to worksheets that are free to download. I recommend doing so early on. It is user friendly and I can see that the excercises will likely be effective for anyone ready to do the work to change.

Historia
Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things - and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and teach us how to fight back.

A Read for Every Woman
Revisado: 04-25-19
I will be sharing this title broadly.
The message is much needed in a wolrd where every woman I know feels burned out from.the pressure to be all things to all people with the expectation of only being able to do for self when every crisis has been dealt with. That day is never going to come so a book that acknowledges this from the outset and takes us from where we truly are is helpful.

Urgh. Just Skip It!!!
Revisado: 04-23-19
Solid pass. I wanted to like it but its heroine is just unlikable and it was poorly written.
She is a 42 year old bitter, divorcee with poor self esteem, who thinks she is over the hill and definitely sounds like it.
First person narration is no picnic when the character is a chore to spend time with.
The hero isn't exactly mature as his 48 years either. Behaviour more in line with an immature 28 year old.
Oops baby Rom Coms only work if you can suspend disblief and go along for a fast paced ride. This clunks along with far too much negative exposition. Little dialogue. Rare action. And poor character work.
Having the heroine's friends declare her witty and winning doesn't make her so.
Seriously save your time and money/credits.

After all, she’s a modern woman - she’ll take her chances on the algorithms of online dating to find her ideal man. Before long, she meets a man who might just be the one - he’s hilarious, quick-witted, and full of heart. And when she meets up with Cameron in real life, he certainly looks exactly like his profile picture...but something’s not quite right.
