Historia
Seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe is idling in the unexpected sunshine when Christy makes his first entrance into Faha, bringing secrets he needs to atone for. Though he can't explain it, Noel knows right then: something has changed. Exquisite and lyrical evocation of a bygone village
Revisado: 02-17-23
Beautiful language that captured the rustic setting of an Irish village pre-electrification. Eccentric and lovable characters come alive under Niall Williams’ pen, and the narration by Dermot Crowley was musical and perfect. One of my favorite audio books ever!

Historia
In this provocative and profound interpretation of The Merchant of Venice, Shylock is juxtaposed against his present-day counterpart in the character of art dealer and conflicted father Simon Strulovitch. With characteristic irony, Jacobson presents Shylock as a man of incisive wit and passion, concerned still with questions of identity, parenthood, anti-Semitism and revenge.

Intellectually pretentious
Revisado: 11-23-22
I could not complete this book. That is a rare occurrence for me. It seemed to be a showcase for the author’s learning and intellect. I found i had little empathy or interest for the internally conflicted and self-hating protagonists. Because of my lack of engagement, the demands on me the reader to draw parallels with Shylock, Jewish history and the perceptions of the Jewish race were too onerous. The author is clever, for sure, but i think he would do better to write an academic treatise rather than construct a novel around his ideas if he wants to grip his readers and draw them in.
The best thing about this book was Michael Kitchen’s narration. His performance was excellent, and he managed to convey nuance despite the unrelievedly sardonic tone of the text.

Historia
In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became one of the very first Jews to escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom—among only a tiny handful who ever pulled off that near-impossible feat. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them. Against all odds, Vrba and his fellow escapee, Fred Wetzler, climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen.

Outstanding
Revisado: 10-30-22
Impeccably researched. Searing and difficult to listen to in certain parts. Many complex issues discussed in a clear impartial way. A story about a remarkable but highly complex individual who lived through unspeakable hardships but was able to live a full life thereafter though never shaking free from his past

Historia
We are our stories. We tell them to stay alive or keep alive those who only live now in the telling. In Faha, County Clare, everyone is a long story...Bedbound in her attic room beneath the falling rain, Plain Ruth Swain is in search of her father. To find him Ruthie must first trace the jutting jaw lines, narrow faces, and gleamy skin of the Swains from the restless Reverend Swain, her great-grandfather, to her father.

Historia
Shuggie’s mother Agnes walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with its own front door while she flicks through the pages of the Freemans catalogue, ordering a little happiness on credit, anything to brighten up her grey life. Married to a philandering taxi-driver husband, Agnes keeps her pride by looking good - her beehive, make-up, and pearly-white false teeth offer a glamourous image of a Glaswegian Elizabeth Taylor.

Wonderfully crafted story
Revisado: 07-09-22
Heart breaking story of the devastating impact of alcoholism on families that is shot through with moments of humor. Outstanding performance by Angus King. His narration made the story three dimensional and alive.

Mixture of believable and unbelievable
Revisado: 06-24-22
I didnt love this story. It was entertaining enough, but stretched my credulity in some parts. The biggest drawback for me was the bad narration. Eleanor’s character was read by an overly dramatic voice who didn’t parse sentences correctly, dropped endings of sentences and left me irritated. It prevented me from being as caught up in the story as i could have been. The other narrator’s weren’t stellar either.

Historia
With her reputation as a vilde chaya (wild animal), Fanny Keismann isn’t like the other women in her shtetl in the Pale of Settlement - certainly not her obedient and anxiety-ridden sister, Mende, whose “philosopher” of a husband has run off to Minsk, abandoning her and their two children. As a young girl, Fanny felt an inexorable pull toward her father’s profession of ritual slaughterer and, under his reluctant guidance, became a master with a knife. And though she long ago gave up that unsuitable profession, Fanny still keeps the knife tied to her right leg.

Evocative of a time long gone
Revisado: 01-07-22
I loved this book. Perhaps because of my Eastern European/Jewish roots, it resonated with me deeply. Part satire and caricature, part a depiction of a culture destroyed by war and persecution, the story was captivating. At times it was laugh out loud funny and at others full of pathos with the many varied and colorful characters lacking in opportunity and fulfillment. The accented narration was perfect for the story and made it come alive, capturing the humor and the culture.
