Historia
Ben and Marian Rolfe are desperate to escape a stifling summer in their tiny Brooklyn apartment, so when they get the chance to rent a mansion in upstate New York for the entire summer for only $900, it's an offer that's too good to refuse. There's only one catch: behind a strange and intricately carved door in a distant wing of the house lives elderly Mrs. Allardyce, and the Rolfes will be responsible for preparing her meals. But Mrs. Allardyce never seems to emerge from her room, and it soon becomes clear that something weird and terrifying is happening in the house.

Utterly predictable
Revisado: 11-13-17
I don't think I was 2 chapters in when I already had an inkling as to what was going to happen. I don't want to put spoilers in for those who like this type of book, however I found it to be utterly predictable. This book reminded me of those bad late night "horror" movies.

Juvenile, cliche, and uninspired.
Revisado: 11-03-17
The basic concept could work if the plot and characters were developed further. It as though every teenage boy’s dreams were translated to words. Uninspired fighting that wins every time; have the female lead a knockout (a virus that makes a fighters boobs big?) juvenile, add a liberal amount of clichéd swearing.
Perhaps the vamp (yep) uses pheromones to instil complete loyalty of hardened US soldiers in a mere 24 hours. Add more character development instead of trite details about shoes, bathroom breaks or pizza.
The reader’s voices were a bit forced, and she used the same rhythm throughout, but overall she did ok.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

What a fabulously novel Novel!
Revisado: 11-09-15
I'm a huge sci-fi reader so I'm really not sure what pulled at me to buy this book, however, I am super glad I did. Thank gawd I can multi-task, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten a darn thing done while listening to this book. The Golem and the Jinni is an extraordinary tale about life, choices, obstacles, love, perseverance, will and some magic thrown in. I loved it so much that I actually bought the hard copy so I could share it with fellow readers at work. Highly unusual practice for me.
I HIGHLY recommend you purchase this book and start listening to it right away. Enjoy the journey that Helen Wecker takes you on.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Scalzi Does It Again! What A Blast!
Revisado: 04-23-14
What about Wil Wheaton’s performance did you like?
As a trekkie, I can appreciate the ironic humour in having Wil read this particular book. He does a brilliant job. His expressive voice and cadence is a real pleasure to listen to. I can envision the characters & conversations actually taking place.
Any additional comments?
What a wonderful twist on the pop culture scenarios that were taken for granted and expected. References to the old Star Trek situations are hilariously convoluted when perceived from the perspective of the "minute-men" actors. Follow along and discover how a few of these moment-by-moment actors figure out how to survive one more "away mission" and live beyond the 1/2 hour we watch them on TV.

Was expecting so much more.
Revisado: 04-23-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This was an okay read. Just found the story lacking in cohesiveness. There seemed to be several loose ends left dangling, unexplained plot twists and poor believability.
If you’ve listened to books by Kathy Reichs before, how does this one compare?
I think she tried to sell it simply based on the fact that the main character, Tory Brennan, is the niece of the forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan - who's got an interesting storyline. Tory seems to be the typical only child, who is ignored by her hardworking distant father. Finding solace in her group of friends who seem to be easily bullied or coerced into committing felony after felony. The ending was a let down and the punishment these kids get, for all the crimes they committed is just preposterous.

Thum one reading hath a lispth and its annoying
Revisado: 05-15-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
To replace the lisping narrator and get the others to read with a little more life!
Has The Historian turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I'll just be more aware of the narrators and read the reviews.
Would you be willing to try another one of the narrators’s performances?
Oh for sure. Just as soon as I figure out which narrator is the one I'd rather not listen to again.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story was somewhat interesting but I felt like it was lacking vitality. I had to put my listening speed to fast in order to move the story along. Unfortunately, I gave up on the story after trying my failed attempts to ignore the lisper.

I Am Not Who You Think I Am.
Revisado: 05-15-13
If you could sum up The Gate Thief in three words, what would they be?
Love, deceit, dualism.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Gate Thief?
OH! It was when Danny, when he thought he had completely lost the battle, turns around and.....hey wait! I can't tell you that, it would give away too much. I guess you'll have to read it to find out.
Which character – as performed by Stefan Rudnicki and Emily Rankin – was your favorite?
I can't say I had a favorite because all the characters were really well done. I mean Stefan Rudnicki cannot do bad.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I went to bed with my ipod set to go off after 15 mins. After doing this another four times I decided to try for 1 hour. The ipod shuts off right in the middle of an epic sentence, so I of course had to turn it on to find out what happened. Honestly, I gave up trying to sleep at 2am and just finished listening to the whole book. Good thing it was a weekend.

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different - and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an "outself"....

Gate Me To Book Two! The suspense is....
Revisado: 05-15-13
Would you listen to The Lost Gate again? Why?
Stefan Rudnicki's voice is like expensive chocolate. Deep, rich, smooth and I can't get enough! He is able to delve into the characters and bring them to life so easily it's like you're watching the story with all your senses, not just your ears. Emily Janice Card has a wonderful voice that is always enjoyable to listen to. In absolute OSC form, the story concepts are new, refreshing, gripping, nerve-wracking, hilarious and thought provoking. Danny has a gift, a deadly gift. So powerful that even his own family will destroy him. So he runs. He runs away and is left questioning everything about his life, his existence, his gift. Who will explain and teach him about his powers, who will guide and protect him as he ventures out into the world of The Outsiders? Is it really about a coming of age story or an age old story coming out. Coming out to destroy more than just Danny.
Which scene was your favorite?
OSC has a gift of seeing and writing through a child's eyes. When he writes the thoughts, emotions and words of a child you are taken back to your own memories, insecurities, though processes and fixations of when you were once young. Danny, upon being bothered by security guards when he was trying to be inconspicuous, as a last ditch effort to put the guards off, ends up 'starring' the guards.

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Hilarity, Brilliance, Grandiloquence & Bloody Fun!
Revisado: 05-14-13
What made the experience of listening to Good Omens the most enjoyable?
Gaiman & Pratchett blend their wit and humor to create an absolutely comical account of a bumbled baby switch, a friendship between an angel & a demon, and how a ‘wrong turn at Albuquerque’ can mess up just about anything. Even the end of the world.
The narrator, Martin Jarvis, does an absolutely top notch job in bringing the characters of this story to life. His talent for dozens of voices is incredible and a joy to listen to. I remember cringing while listening to Jarvis describe Sergeant Shadwell. Then Jarvis produces the voice of Sergeant Shadwell and when it hits my ears a visual picture of this down and out, dirty, disheveled, chain-smoking, condensed-milk-drinking man literally made me shiver with distain. True talent Mr. Jarvis.
