Historia
In lyric, accessible prose, Carlo Rovelli invites us to consider questions about the nature of time that continue to puzzle physicists and philosophers alike. For most listeners, this is unfamiliar terrain. We all experience time, but the more scientists learn about it, the more mysterious it appears. We think of it as uniform and universal, moving steadily from past to future, measured by clocks. Rovelli tears down these assumptions one by one, revealing a strange universe where, at the most fundamental level, time disappears.

Content super, narration poor
Revisado: 09-03-23
Sometimes an author should not narrate his own book. While Rovelli may be able to converse easily and charmingly in English, his thick accent makes it burdensome to follow complex passages, too often. Although I speak some Italian, this audiobook was heavy going, especially given the many scientific terms in a heavy accent.I gave up after two chapters.

Historia
The Middle Ages harshly tested every aspect of human perseverance, imagination, and survival. Living conditions were squalid for almost everyone except the ruling elite, and most of the riches of Western culture were preserved in monasteries and on other continents. And into this setting came widespread famines, prolonged wars, and plagues that marked Europe's late medieval period as one of the most harrowing in recorded history.

Okay, not great
Revisado: 08-04-23
This course is weak on content. The professor seeks to be entertaining by being a bit sensationalist and cute, but other courses on medieval history and culture have more solid information and insight.

Ms. Jackson is not only a superb writer but her performance is extraordinarily skilled. I found the content convincing and enlightening. I have listened to this book twice and will listen again.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Can’t understand all the great reviews
Revisado: 07-30-21
This seems like a never-ending stand up comedy routine by a teenager. I fell asleep after ten minutes. Sadly I hadn’t set the sleep timer, so it looks like I actually listened to more than 15 minutes.
Not only do I find the story boring, I’m having difficulty with the narrator’s voice. To me, it isn’t engaging.

Terrible voice, pompous speaker, boring
Revisado: 03-27-21
Lots of professors have impressive CVs, but few of them give interminable details of their academic history in their Audible bio. This guy is VERY impressed with himself!
In these recordings, Rendsburg is obviously reading prepared essays; the delivery lacks a natural delivery. I found his nasal, strident voice to be annoying.
Although I am fascinated by the topic, he managed to make it boring and a bit irritating. I tried to keep listening but I couldn’t bear his presentation style. I gave up.

Moreover, the study of matter has led directly to such inventions as semiconductor circuits for computers, new fabrics for clothes, and powerful adhesives for medicine and industry.

Excellent follow-up to her other works
Revisado: 05-03-20
This audiobook includes recordings of several live presentations during a retreat. Very good, but I wouldn’t recommend this for a person’s first introduction to Pema Chödrön’s work. The content is somewhat more casual, light and entertaining, and seems to build on a foundation of previous understanding of Buddhist principles. One of the great features, as always, is Pema Chodron’s voice and her clear style of speaking. Very engaging and worthwhile.

Extremely elementary, frequently boring
Revisado: 05-03-20
The content was uninteresting and uninformative for the most part. It’s hard to believe that an exploration of human psychology could be boring, but it was. The main problem was that the information was so simplistic that it seemed to be geared toward high school freshmen taking a general health class. Even commonplace words were defined and explained. Before I gave up, I sampled different chapters, hoping it would get better. The chapter on chronic pain had some paragraphs that were informative, and the narrator seemed more animated in that section, but the chapter on sleep was so dull it was excruciating.

Not for everyone
Revisado: 05-01-20
I found this narrator’s breathy voice to be somewhat annoying rather than soothing. Just not my cuppa — your mileage may vary. Also, regarding content, I found that other guided meditations have been vastly more helpful. This one seemed so silly at times that I almost laughed out loud. Obviously, Ms. Bernstein’s recordings are appealing to some people. I’m just not one of them. However, this recording was free, so it was a harmless experiment to give it a try. She deserves credit for the effort.

Not helpful
Revisado: 05-01-20
The explanations weren’t helpful. First, the content is so elementary that it seemed to be an introductory lecture for high-school students. There were few or no insights that were useful. Second the language is sometimes annoying, such as the overuse of “actually ... actually ... actually.” Third, the performer’s voice was not pleasant to listen to, for me, but that may have been related to the annoying content rather than the individual’s vocal delivery.
