Wonderful narration. Mediocre stories.

Incredible narration and audio
Revisado: 12-26-23
This was an incredible listening experience! The classic stories are a wonderful departure from contemporary gore, Stephen Fry’s narration was perfect as always, and the Dolby Atmos recording was amazing! My first time listening to something produced with this technology, I was blown away by the sound effects behind me, next to me. I was literally jumping all the time.

Historia
Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

Enlightening and Compassionate
Revisado: 11-16-23
Not only is this book interesting and informative about the role of a NYC Death Investigator, but the very personal and compassionate lens through which it's shared is very enlightening as well. I think that for me, the impact on the person in this line of work is the most interesting facet, as I've often wondered who can see these horrible things day in and day out? This book is an excellent combination of both information and personal/emotional experience.

Another Great Brunetti Book
Revisado: 03-03-23
Fantastic story, and while I love David Colacci’s narration I thought Rintoul did a great job. Different, but very good.

Narrator is Good, But Not for This Book
Revisado: 01-24-23
I'm listening to all of the Commissario Brunetti books in order, and was shocked to discover that David Colacci does not narrate this one. Instead, this narrator has an English accent and would surely be wonderful if the story was set in London and not Venice, felt more like a Dickens story. His different voice characterizations range from upper class British to cockney, none of which seem to fit the story. Also, some pronunciations were like biting down on aluminum foil, "Chiara" is pronounced CHEE-AHR-UH for example, and each time I heard it I had to cringe. The pronunciations of some names changed over the course of the book, a character's name was pronounced LILLY and later LELE, and it was confusing. Great story, weird narration.

Historia
From the United States and Britain to continental Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege, while authoritarianism is on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, Anne Applebaum, an award-winning historian of Soviet atrocities who was one of the first American journalists to raise an alarm about antidemocratic trends in the West, explains the lure of nationalism and autocracy. In this captivating essay, she contends that political systems with radically simple beliefs are inherently appealing, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else.

Excellent for Understanding the Past & Present
Revisado: 08-02-20
Very much enjoyed both the content and performance. The author’s authority definitely comes through in her narration. The history is helpful in understanding how we got here, but Chapter 5 The Prairie Fire is what really put things in perspective for me.

Just fantastic!
Revisado: 11-06-18
This book was an incredible journey through two wars, and I enjoyed every moment. It’s the kind of book that makes you genuinely miss the characters when it ends. The narration performance was so good I’m going to search for anything else she’s done and get it.
