Historia
This powerful story of passion, adultery, honor, and repression caused a tremendous controversy in 1850 when it was published, because of its provocative subject matter. Set in Puritan New England, the novel begins with Hester Prynne, a young woman with an illegitimate baby daughter, leaving prison to face her scornful townsfolk. Forced to wear a scarlet letter "A" to remind people of her adultery, Hester obstinately holds her head high and refuses to reveal the father of her child.

Wonderful story BUT….
Revisado: 06-15-24
The narrator did a disservice to this wonderful old story of sin, redemption, and hypocrisy. Her narration reduced it to a flat and boring example of a morality tale you’d fall asleep to in Sunday school. Yes sure, it *is* a morality tale, but one with nuances and layers that could have been rendered interesting with the proper narrator. She sounds like she’s smoked too many packs of cigarettes.
I’m not so inflexible about the numbered chapters that it was a problem for me. (Really people, is this your first audiobook??). The long winded intro isn’t necessary to the story, but that’s due to Hawthorne not translating well to the 21st century listener. Definitely don’t listen to The House of the Seven Gables if you had problems with this one lol

Historia
The story is told from the point of view of Pip, an orphan of humble origins who dreams of being a gentleman. From a chilling encounter with a convict when he was seven, through his coming of age and early adulthood, he tells of his "memorable days" and the "great changes" they wrought in him. Pip is apprenticed to kind-hearted Joe Gargery, the blacksmith, husband to his ill-tempered sister. On meeting the eccentric and reclusive Miss Havisham and her proud and haughty ward, the beautiful Estella, Pip becomes ashamed of his origins and hopes to one day better himself.

“Harrrrrreeeeee” . I’ve listened to the entire series multiple times and the narrator is truly exceptional. You won’t find a tighter performance anywhere. Equal maybe, but not better.
But that Haaarrreeeee gets me every. single. time.

Incredible narration
Revisado: 03-03-22
Alan Rickman’s narration is superb. Depth of inflections true to each character, you can easily identify what character is speaking. It’s like hearing this old favorite afresh. I’m so sad he didn’t do more.

A ton of good information - but…
Revisado: 01-07-22
I am a huge fan of Dr. Greger. I have his “How Not To Die” audiobook and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I have listened to it many times and am familiar with Dr. Greger’s rather unusual speech cadences.
I have a similar narration complaint about “How Not To Diet” as so many others. Unfortunately, you have to get past the first third of the book before his narration goes back to his regular speech patterns. If there is some way that Dr. Greger can re-record this book, he will find his audience expand, be more receptive, and do more good. This current version does the exact opposite, and does Dr. Greger a great disservice.

Grateful I found this content
Revisado: 12-10-21
Drew is the first to admit it’s not for everyone. The first couple of times I listened I thought it was weird. Like, really weird.
I quickly realized I was falling asleep and had no idea how the stories ended, so I signed up on Patreon for $5/month. NO ads, totally worth it just for that. Moved up to $10 in a few months for more content. Cheaper than everything but Melatonin. Why ads? Guy has to pay the bills, just like you. If you’re falling asleep just pay the $5.
I’ve had moderate to severe insomnia since I was a child. I’ve tried so many OTC and prescription medicines, CBD, alcohol, meditation, exercise, music, reading boring books - nothing worked for long. Now I only use Sleep With Me, and the boring guy who keeps me company in the deep dark night.

This podcast is incredible. Try it a few times before you pass judgement, it’s the way it is for a reason. The show notes often show the mark to skip to to start the story. I just became a member of the Patreon and that is something I don’t do. Yep, I’m a rebel.

Good story but...
Revisado: 10-24-20
Like so many others, I’ve always been a big fan of the series. The first volume audiobook was pretty good, so I moved on. I can’t even finish this one, it’s so terrible.
It’s the weakest book of the 4, but still a decent story, right? But the narration is sub-par. I know you can’t get too fussed about men doing women’s character voices and vice versa, because it’s always going to be awkward, but here the women’s voices are flat, cramped, simpering. Truly cringeworthy. The men’s voices are almost as terrible, practically monotone, and one of the lead voices is so soft it might be a woman.
No one expects a male voice to imitate a woman, but cadence and inflection are all that’s needed. This was just awful.

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.
