In the late 1880s, Frank Lenz of Pittsburgh, a renowned high-wheel racer and long-distance tourist, dreamed of cycling around the world. He finally got his chance by recasting himself as a champion of the downsized "safety-bicycle" with inflatable tires, the forerunner of the modern road bike that was about to become wildly popular. In the spring of 1892 he quit his accounting job and gamely set out west to cover 20,000 miles over three continents as a correspondent for Outing magazine. Two years later, after having survived countless near disasters and unimaginable hardships, he approached Europe for the final leg. He never made it....

Dry and depressing
Revisado: 04-24-24
Quite dry and fundamentally depressing story that does not even try to draw some greater meaning from it all. The reader is great, though

Truly incredible and inspiring journey!
Revisado: 01-04-23
Alastair’s tale of his journey around the world by bike truly blew me away! It was such a grand and magnificent adventure that displayed the beauty, diversity, and kindness of humanity and our world. It is also a beautifully authentic and personal tale and Alastair lays out not only the joy, but also the hardship and loneliness of such a journey, and the vulnerability that he displays in the book really endeared me and made me feel empathetic to him. This book sparked in me the motivation and drive to dream big for my own life, and to try to embark on a journey of my own very soon. I am so happy I stumbled upon this book and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for an exciting and personal tale of grand adventure and for all those looking for a spark to start living more adventurously!
