A Bit Formulaic, But Sound
Revisado: 07-22-18
overall, the book is pretty good. It's clear the author has a lot of research and it has a lot of convictions about what works. My only concern is that, to the author's own admission, this is just one of the many books he puts out. It's sort of has a feel of being formulaic and maybe even rushed and its development. It's certainly worth reading but not necessarily the best book I've ever read of its type.

Well Worth the Resd
Revisado: 07-10-18
the book seem very well-researched and stayed away from sensationalism in my opinion. It covered each of the men objectively and evenly. The manner in which it jumped from various theaters in various efforts by each of the men worked very well with most chapters being dedicated to a single person. Lots of History to learn, including the fact that Patton was an extraordinary General and that MacArthur may have been this country's greatest General. George Marshall, on the other hand, was a master of understanding people, understanding skills, and understanding Logistics. Our country is very fortunate to have had each of these men serve at the time they did.

More About Her Life Than the Dying
Revisado: 07-10-18
The book's title is a bit deceptive. It's really about her journey as a caretaker in the persons she ran across. While her sample size is larger than most people would have, it's far from a scientific study. Nonetheless the points are well-made, and it's hard to argue with some of her conclusions.

Way Too Political
Revisado: 11-09-17
Early on, the author is very focused on rules and concepts to help readers write and communicate well. There’s plenty to benefit from. The latter half of the book, however, spends too much time on examples of bad writing by lawyers and government officials. Not only does it seem these sections are designed to simply add heft to the book, but most of the examples used are conspicuously ones written by "diabolical" Conservatives or corporations. The shortcomings of Liberals and others are mentioned a few times, but quickly glossed over in favor of dissecting the unforgivable crimes of Conservatives and corporate executives. By the end, it’s clear the book’s purpose is as much to drag Conservatives and their supporters through the mud as it is to teach readers how to write more clearly.

The Case for Focus

The book provides a thoughtful case for living a more focused, and less distracted, life. The end of the book is pretty detailed with recommendations on how to deal with email, which seemed a bit out of place (although on point).

Historia
William D. Cohan is no knee-jerk advocate for Wall Street and the big banks. He's one of America's most respected financial journalists and the progressive best-selling author of House of Cards. He has long been critical of the bad behavior that plagued much of Wall Street in the years leading up to the 2008 financial crisis, and because he spent 17 years as an investment banker on Wall Street, he is an expert on its inner workings as well.

An Inch Deep and A Mile Wide
Revisado: 04-26-17
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Persons who feat that ultra-liberals might actually decide to do away with Wall Street altogether. Or persons who have no knowledge about what Wall Street does and why it might have some use.
What could William D. Cohan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Not only this book very superficial, poorly researched and poorly argued, it's a mile wide and an inch deep. Much of the book makes the author seem like a mouthpiece for Wall Street, rather than an analyst of it. Basically, his contention is that the big banks should not be broken back into commercial and investment banks because customers use the banks currently... as if that were proof that we shouldn't tamper with them. He also argues that it would be complicated to disentangle commercial operations from investment banking. He hates the Volker Rule and much of Dodd-Frank. His entire solution is, unbelievably, to have the banks self-police themselves against taking large risks by tying their personal net worth to the performance of the banks. In other words, require them to lose their net worth if the banks go under. Good luck with that.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes
What character would you cut from Why Wall Street Matters?
None. It is non-fiction.

Historia
Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made Michael Lewis' work possible.
