Grover Gardener’s voice perfectly fits Bujold’s sardonic and thoughtful writing style. I loved every second, few books or ongoing series have such a magnetically likable cast! Mile’s first big adventure is one I feel compelled to revisit every few years for all of its memorable moments of comedy, action, and heartbreak. If you’ve never read Vorkosigan before, well, read Shards of Honor and Barrayar first, but then read Warrior’s Apprentice once you’re officially hooked on these Vor lords!

This book does an incredible job of broadly teaching the unspoken history of human resistance to banal government cruelty and corporate greed. It fills me both with hope for the future and incredible skepticism towards established historical narratives highlighting the deeds of our political leaders.

If you're looking for galactic scale political and military conflict and 'rise to power' stories revolving around wonderfully charismatic characters, look no further, Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a delight!

I liked this book, but it wasn't what I expected! Overall, it's very intent on setting up its characters more than delivering a satisfying narrative. And boy do I love the characters, it's a great cast of quirky, polite badasses! I'm especially fond of the cat society and its aloofness. The audiobook narration is also excellent, with natural changes in tone and cadence that makes it easy to keep track of who's talking. Unfortunately the story isn't very punchy until the finale, which involves a rousing airship battle. I'd actually expected more of a naval military adventure when I started listening, but the story reads more like an espionage thriller, with a heavy overuse of evil magic spider hoards as antagonists. I can not express how tired to death I am of evil spider hoards in fantasy novels. The book also answers none of the big questions it raises, which is frustrating. It didn't even resolve an honor duel scenario that it spent quite some time building up in the beginning. Although I did enjoy the characters a great deal, I'd recommend waiting until the next book in the series is released before picking this one up so you're not stuck with such an inconclusive ending.
