I purchased these books because I've enjoyed other books very this author. Don't waste your time of money. I've read both in this series and I still don't know what it's about. Now the second book ends in a cliffhanger. What a total waste.

good story
Revisado: 03-13-22
I read other reviews that weren't very positive. I feel very differently about the story. The narration could have been more natural and some words were mispronounced - coiffed for example. Anyway, the book was funny and real. I love that is was written about my stomping grounds. There is a particular feeling that only Angelino's understand about the neighborhoods being gentrified and folks being edged out of their community and then being treated as though they are the invaders. Also, the struggle, until very recently, to appear non-Black in work environments that are 1) male dominated and 2) mostly white. The effort a person of color must put into being able to "fit in" is tremendous. This story hit all points of the exhaustion a Black woman goes through just to be. Again, great story.

very unsatisfying
Revisado: 02-19-22
Let's get past the prologue, which contained gratuitous sexual content and profanity, but, it was almost one third of the book!!!! The character development and interaction was shallow. More info into one of the main character's time spent up to the present around have been helpful. The epilogue was just too quick. No depth of feeling. Again, the gratuitous us of the "f" word added absolutely nothing to the story or the character. The narrator read as if this were a grade school after school library reading. The book felt more like the galley of a really good book than a fleshed out copy.
What I liked... the redemption story that I believe the author was trying to underline. (I won't go into that as it will cause spoilers and I hate spoilers). I liked the diversity.

I listened to this book and I feel this is not a once and done kind of book. I believe there is a lot to glean and much to internalize and from which go learn. This is a whole lot of book. Thank you for your transparency and also allowing me the opportunity to review your work.

Best so far
Revisado: 06-22-21
This is the best of get series. The writing can become tedious but this was easier to read than those that came before. More than 25 years since this book was written and the nothing has changed with his sexual abuse and domestic violence victims are treated by law enforcement and other authority figures.

Another cliff hanger
Revisado: 06-01-21
I received a free copy of this book for my honest opinion. I'm giving this 3.5 actually. I like the main character. I didn't understand Crew's dad's response to her wanting to know Doboro unless there is something that these first stories haven't revealed. I sort of get Crew's conflict, but not the anger. Doboro explained why he was not around and she seemed to accept it then, in the first story, went ballistic trying to get him to stay. I also don't understand how Summer's parents allowed Doboro into their home when they knew their daughter was a flake. He could have been anyone. I also don't understand how Doboro radar wasn't triggered by the club owner. Just saying. What I liked was how Doboro's faith influenced Summer to try to change her behavior. I liked the action. I loved the cliff hanger. I think that if the questions I have about the motives behind the behavior of some characters were answered, I'd be more inclined to give the book five stars.

A good adventure story
Revisado: 05-28-21
I received this audible book free of charge for my honest opinion. I really liked the story. My only negative is the narrator. Sorry. I liked that the story addressed the true walk of Faith many Christians experience where their faith is challenged or even shaken to the core and the process of healing and walking that Christian Faith during those times is what makes it stronger. The primary character seems to have a Faith that has, until this time, been tested. He has had troubles, but has tried to "fix" situations in his life through his own devices, which brings him to a place where we find him - in trouble. The events that ensue, cause him to lose everything he's tried to protect. While he is in a process of healing - physical, emotional, spiritually - he is brought face to face with situations that challenge his current paradigm. Many of the Faith lessons he learns come from someone who is not a Christian, which shows that God can use anyone to teach us if we are willing to allow it. The story asks questions that are also answered through the many trials that our "hero" encounters. I liked the action and the road weary blues playing traveler. That was a very interesting take and almost makes the main character seem like a superhero. All in all, I would recommend this book to others.

Well worth the read
Revisado: 05-19-21
This memoir addresses many issues experienced by women generally and Black women in particular. It deals with coming to terms and growing past past hurts and disappointments. The voice is sympathetic and the reader can relate to the feelings expressed. The negative is that there was a lot of really technical medical jargon which was a distraction. I would recommend this book.

Historia
Joseph, a master craftsman and carpenter, stokes the ire of his family when he weds his pregnant (and seemingly unfaithful) betrothed, Mary. Pious, devout, and guided by the dictates of Heaven, Joseph has no issue with taking Mary - who still claims to be a virgin - as his wife and committing himself to the protection of her child, whom he senses is extraordinary. However, there are others who are also aware of how special the child is, and not all have its best interests at heart.

just awful
Revisado: 05-01-21
This is not just a retelling, it's some an awful attempt to make Biblical events into something like a B-rated action movie. The tone of the story changed many times from Joseph understanding and having faith to counting events as coincidence or just luck. There is a scene where a tent is found then later it's pitched in a matter of minutes by one person like some nylon pup tent. Historically incorrect and just plain laughable. Joseph at another point seems to forget what he was told about Mary and "the baby" when he tells the Magic to explain what they mean that the baby is special, or the Messiah. The earlier narrative told that Joseph had been given that information by Divine message which is why he was so intent on going on with the marriage. Really a terrible story...part sci-fi and part action story with a thin layer of Biblical information. Really needed to be edited to continuity tone of voice.

This is a story of lies, relationships and love. How much is one willing to give up to have the life they want, even if that means hurting those you love.
