Historia
When Finlay Ashowan joins the staff of the King and Queen of Daxaria, he’s an enigma. No one knows where he comes from or how he came to be where he is, which suits Fin just fine. He’s satisfied simply serving as the royal cook, keeping nosy passersby out of his kitchen, and concocting some truly uncanny meals. But Fin’s secret identity doesn’t stay hidden for long. After all, it’s not every day a house witch and his kitten familiar, Kraken, take to meddling in imperial affairs.

A refreshing nuance of magic
Revisado: 07-24-23
A tale of a different kind of witch’s magic. A story a commoner cook and a noble falling in love against the odds. Don’t skip as hilarious moments may be hidden. The narration is superb as he catches the subtle expressions of each character. A credit worth spending as I go on to book 2.

No end in sight...
Revisado: 07-10-23
I am ambivalent to have stumbled upon this epic story. It's 15 books already and our protagonist hasn't even reached 18 yrs old. He still doesn't know how to wield his druid powers which usually come in bursts and always at the last second. It hints at a "God" who seemed powerful to grant their need at the last second...The battle scenes don't make any sense. Ex. at the battle for the empire's capital there are no sorcerors on the empire's side. If hints of a cavalry charge about to hit the evil goddess but the first to die was on foot? and how could they have brought with them a colossal statue? Doesn't make sense. The author made it clear several times that Gwen would be the greatest ruler of all time. Na-uh! She basically killed 98% of her entire people leaving the ones close to her as the ones left alive. Again, the author magics her way to create plots to keep this series going. But the story is interesting, laughable but yes interesting. Now, in this book, a new set of characters is introduced, Which only makes this series longer with no end in sight. If you're reading reviews at this point of the series just accept the pain of wasting all those credits as we are conned to spend on these short books. I am so gullible...lol!

Out of character
Revisado: 05-01-21
One of my pet peeves in all books I read/listened to is when an author places a character incongruous just to subvert the story to create a plot. I was satisfied with the first book and thought It may be interesting to continue. But on the get-go, I was upset about the story. This is regarding Mal's supposedly master tracker skills. He is perceived to be a great tracker but he fails to recognize being tracked? He completely failed to discern the gold pins. So, just to create a plot the author makes him an idiot. I want my credit back to both books. And spoiler alert, the movie series based on this book has some similarities but a completely different plot.

Couldn't get past the jarring naration
Revisado: 08-07-20
I would have liked the book but the dramatization and background "Noise" is too jarring for my taste. Multiple voices and the noise proved I can't take it. I must have ended 3 hrs from the start when I called it quits. And it wasn't a binge 3 hrs. Multiple stops and restarts in-between. Sorry, Neil, I liked your other books but not this one.

Start of a great series
Revisado: 10-07-18
A coming of age epic fantasy book. I'm glad I stumbled on this. It's about a boy, Stavin, who conquered his fear by facing a real dragon. The dragon awarded his bravery with indestructible armour and weapon. Being bullied at an early age, Stavin went on to become a formidable fighter. He has dragon luck amassing a great fortune. If you like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series, Kel Kade's King's Dark Tiding series, then your search is over for In this series you'll find much of the same type of Epic Fantasy. Even though these series are a shorter novella than the aforementioned It's a delight to listen to and you better have 6 credits left to enjoy these.

Opposite characters
Revisado: 12-24-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If the author stayed true to the characters. Makes me cringe when Caldan is reduced to being a worthless and useless hero. I thought Caldan was excellent in dominion but in thiis book his actions falls short. Makes me want to give up on this book and several times i had to stop listening. This is the longest time i finished the book. There's no page turner. The heros are reduced to bunggling fools.
Would you ever listen to anything by Mitchell Hogan again?
Perhaps not. That remains to be seen with the 3rd book.
Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favorite?
Caldan used to be my favorite character until the author destroyed his traits.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The only redeeming quality is the 3rd book. Hopefully the author wakes up from this nightmare of character destruction. If not then the author just wasted my time and credits.

Any additional comments?
A great addition to my titles. An epic story of Vaelin from boyhood to manhood. There's magic, a little romance, sword fighting without the gore. If you like Brandon Sandersons Stormlight, or Brent Weeks Angel Trilogy...then you're gonna like this.

What? That's It?
Revisado: 01-16-13
If you could sum up A Memory of Light in three words, what would they be?
Epic...Moving...Lacking
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When olver blew the horn...
Any additional comments?
It's great that a series I have loved has come to a close. Though It was done no where near how Robert Jordan writes i.e. Jordan writes at a slower pace with more descriptions and specifics with even more humor. Am glad Brandon finished the series just to bring closure. This book is the Last Battle so the book is mostly about fighting and war you'll get sickened by it. But what I found disappointing is the epilogue or in Jordans words...The Last Chapter. There was none. I have hoped it brought closure to our favorite characters. What happened after the last battle is what I was looking after. Disappointing and Lacking.

Annoying book we dont need
Revisado: 11-21-12
Any additional comments?
Am an OSC fan. I had to listen again to Pathfinder in anticipation of Ruins. It was downright disappointing. OSC had to constantly remind the readers of what happened in Pathfinder. This is the second book! We all read the first one so why the summary? There's not much action in this book either. Most of the story is a war of words. The characters mistrusting each other, self pity, bickering. The first half of this book was like that that I was tempted to just stop and ask for a credit. I mean, It was so annoying I trudged slowly to finish the book. Other OSC books I can get thru in one go. Not this one.
