Great writing, well-researched and documented. The stories are told bluntly without any attempt to soften the brutality of history—hard to listen to at times. I wish the narrator had made a better attempt at learning the correct or locally correct pronunciation of names and places, but otherwise the narration was unobtrusive, as it should be in my opinion. I wish the pdf had included all of the illustrations from the book.

Great story, bad editing

It took me awhile to get into the story, but it was a good one. The narration is fine but the editing of little clips together is obvious and can be distracting.

Good book, narration not so good

As a person who got two degrees in home economics back in the eighties, I wanted to read this book as soon as I heard about it. I did learn a lot about how home economics developed in three different socioeconomic groups at the same time—I had no idea. I also learned more about what lead up to the state of the profession that I found upon graduation. I especially liked the last chapter about how desperately we need to bring home economics back.
The narrator would probably be great for children’s books. Her manner of sing-song reading is odd with this kind of book and makes it very hard to follow. Halfway through the book I started thinking the main point of the author was to ridicule home economics and tear down home economists as terrible people, then I realized it was the narration that was making it sound snarky. I’ll make a point of avoiding books read by her in the future.

Great classic

There are many of these classics that I’ve never read and I’m trying to rectify that. This book is excellent and the story is really timeless. Outstanding performance by the reader.

Terrible Narration

I really can't tell if I would have like the book better if I had read it or if the narration had been better. I think I would have. I gritted my teeth and finished this one even though listening to the reader was causing my head to hurt. She mispronounced so many words and in some places just substituted a totally different word. I've read other reviews where people said it sounded as if it was being read by Siri, and that's a dead-on description. The subject matter of the book was very interesting but pointed up a depressing reality.

Fascinating

Although it is a story without resolution, it is fascinating. The journalists were very thorough in tracking down and interviewing people, which I appreciated. It is very sad that Mme. du Plantier’s killer

Great book, of course

My complaint about this audiobook is because of my own behavior. Of course any book about Da Vinci would need illustrations and there is a downloadable PDF file to accompany this audiobook. But since I most often listen to audiobooks on my phone in my car, I was not able to look at the illustrations until later. Others have complained about Mr.Molina’s correct pronunciations of Italian words and names, but I was glad for this. One complaint that is not specific to this book is that occasionally the reader trailed off at the end of sentences such that I had to go back a bit and turn up the volume to hear what was said. But overall a great book.

Engrossing

This story has two narrators and it really enhances the listening experience. Great story!! It kept me absolutely transfixed on a very long car trip.
