Narration brings me back

Five starts. Like him or not , and let’s face it he doesn’t seem that likable, listening brought me back to the 70s. Felt like he was narrating a mystery noir movie script.

Could not get into this and I tried a few times. Mind kept wandering. Didn’t care about characters. Same retread Agatha Christie plot.

Author presents this true nightmare in a fair, comprehensive, compelling narrative. Even though I’d read and watched and followed the story in real time I was compelled to purchase and not sorry I did.

Insightful

Provided more background on the elusive wife of “America’s Prince.” I can’t go but hear these stories and wish for a different ending. Heartbreaking even after 25 years. Would like to learn more about the surviving sister, Lisa. The devastation she and her mother must’ve gone through is unimaginable as well of course for JFK Jr family and friends, let alone the world.

Like everyone I was interested to hear what Britney had to say. Overall satisfied but I wish she’d filled in some periods with more detail. Her professional process, in particular. She mentions producing albums in one sentence, like it’s easy and magic. I’m not a musician but know it’s an arduous endeavor. Am interested in her process. She says woolen aren’t interested in any but her personal life and appearance, which is maddening.

Wish she’d focused more in other areas Maybe we can take more interest in the music?

She’s been manipulated her entire life. Hoping this chapter of her life is different.

Great writer, mediocre reader

Ann Patchett wrote two of my best of the year books: Commonwealth and The Dutch House. She’s the author of the brilliant Bel Canto and the fascinating This is the Story of a Marriage and the one about her friend who had cancer of the jaw. In These precious Days Patchett writes about her life. Her bookstore. Living in Nashville ( I do, too). Cleaning out her kitchen clutter. Her husband’s life as a pilot. Her three fathers. She has the ability to make what may seem like to one a non-story indeed an interesting one. Tom Hanks read her last novel. Let’s get him to read her next book. Her reading style is deliberate and felt manipulative to me. Like she’s telling us how we should feel. She also crosses the line (tough not to do with memoirs) of bravado. Look how kind I am. I live in a fabulous house in perfect neighborhood. I’m rich. I own a bookstore etc.
all that said four stars. So we’ll written. Maybe pick up the book instead?
