Historia
As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

Wholly Indelible
Revisado: 03-27-25
"The snow may fall, but the sun also rises."
The way Suzanne Collins can take something I already know is going to happen and still have it rip me into shreds.... is absolutely remarkable.
I would give this book 1000 stars if I could. The chess pieces, the breadcrumbs, the moments that click into place and make me gasp aloud are forever the topping on an already incredible cake. We have already seen the "end" and the "beginning" but what can the middle show us that we don't already know?
Its the spark that grew into the story we know and love. It's a side of Haymitch that shows who he is at the core. What he really lost... and gained during the 2nd Quarter Quell. It's heartbreaking, it's epiphanous, it's honestly wholly indelible.

This essay comes from the NPR series This I Believe, which features brief personal reflections from both famous and unknown Americans. The pieces that make up the series compel listeners to rethink not only what and how they have arrived at their beliefs, but also the extent to which they share them with others.

Beautifully lyrical and gritty
Revisado: 03-19-25
This is becoming my year of reading Joy Harjo. Her words are constantly and consistently moving in such a profoundly real and opulent way. A beautifully lyrical and gritty way of reciting poetry about life, writing, and the human experience. This was a short, sweet, expressive essay in Joy's repertoire.

Historia
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Hilarious, witty, and a touch wistful
Revisado: 03-18-25
Murderbot is a sweet and surprisingly hilarious inner commentary from one supposed murderbot's time with his client group of scientists. Written in such a way that this story pokes at the morality of keeping such "robots" in a servitude manner and showcases the inner thoughts of right and wrong to a sentient robotic being. Absolutely witty and shockingly sweet.

Historia
In this transcendent memoir, grounded in tribal myth and ancestry, music and poetry, Joy Harjo, one of our leading Native American voices, details her journey to becoming a poet. Born in Oklahoma, Harjo grew up learning to dodge an abusive stepfather by finding shelter in her imagination, a deep spiritual life, and connection with the natural world. She attended an Indian arts boarding school, where she nourished an appreciation for painting, music, and poetry; gave birth while still a teenager; and struggled on her own as a single mother, eventually finding her poetic voice.

A storytellers story
Revisado: 03-07-25
Joy's Crazy Brave is powerful, the walk through her life and mind is vivid and awakening. Her words, eloquent and gripping. She, as a narrator... a storyteller, is passionate and almost musical in the rhythm and delivery. Stunning performance.

SJM's snarkiest babe
Revisado: 03-04-25
Honestly, it took me about five tries to get into this book. Picked it up when it first came out, then again a year later, so on and so on. Every time, I couldn't get past that first chapter before my interest fizzled. I tried listening this time and still had issues with the first 20% of the book. But after that? I got invested. Bryce is snarky and doesn't take shit. She's guarded, and I love her for it. By the end, I was with her 1000%. Tears, so many tears.
