Historia
Roger Stringer grew up in rural Mississippi, hunting and eating everything from deer to rabbits. When he had two sons, Zac and Justin, he gave them guns and took them to the woods as well. Then one day when the boys were home alone, he got a call from Zac that Justin had been shot. What follows is an intimate and gripping memoir about the shooting’s aftermath. The story moves between the perspectives of Roger and Zac as they take us through their journey of betrayal, redemption, and ultimately confrontation with a company that had kept its corruption a secret for decades.

Historia
Stephen Smith is the boy who did not exist. Born out of wedlock in the early 1960s, Steve's parents - both devout Catholics - had felt so 'shamed' by their son's illegitimate birth that they hid him away from the world by locking him in the cellar...for 13 years. Apart from a few admissions to hospital as a result of his 'imprisonment', Steve remained in the coal cellar of the family home where he was deprived of daylight, his childhood, school and human contact until he'd reached his teenage years.

Heart wrenching, well presented.
Revisado: 12-08-24
What a wild existence to have. A truly gut wrenching start. So happy and props to hear of the turn around in self Stephen made. The system failed these boys time and again, and despite some time of being a product of that(which no one could possibly blame him for) he accepted his short comings, made forward strides and became a beautiful person.
Thank you, Stephen, for sharing your story with the world.

Phenomenal story of perseverance.
Revisado: 12-04-24
This isn’t my first Aston Hall memoir and yet,
I am each time mesmerized by these girls. What a journey to have conquered. So much unnecessary pain, both physical and mental. To say I am proud of the strides this woman took to regain herself and her mind and also go after those of wrong doing.. it isn’t enough. A force to be reckoned with, indeed.
My only grievance is the staccato of the narrator. I kept hoping she would stop with the unbearable pauses between words, but she never did. I love her voice, but not the breaks. Had I not already been invested in the asylums stories, I would have stopped listening ing fairly early on.

Thank you, Tressa, for finding the strength to share your story ♥️
As someone who is also a product of the system, this story resonates with me. So much heartache and misfortune. So many times she was failed. I applaud Tressa for her ability to bounce back time and time again.. for the growth she has made and hopefully continues to make.

Historia
After Katmere, I shouldn't be surprised by anything. Including the existence of a world beyond my world called the Shadow Realm. Yet here I am, stuck in a strange, dangerous place with the worst of the supernaturals, the monster that other monsters fear: Hudson Vega. He might be Jaxon's brother and ridiculously hot, but he's a complete bona fide pain in my ass. The question is whether we'll find a way out before I kill him...or run out of time.

By far my favorite of the collection
Revisado: 10-07-24
I’m so glad I continued, despite the few “it’s just another twilight” reviews of the first. This one has been, by far, my favorite of the series. It has so much! Like all of them, it has self discovery, loyalty, perseverance, and much, much more. I’m waiting for my husband to finish book 3&4 before I start the final, so I may just listen to this one again.

My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods...or monsters. I still can't decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me. Then there's Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn't felt anything for a hundred years.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Historia
Dave Pelzer was brutally abused as a child by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. She considered him a slave - no longer a boy, but an "it". He was physically and mentally tortured and starved. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare he experienced behind closed doors, and his father was aware of the abuse but turned to denial and alcohol. The abuse only fueled a determination to survive and become stronger.

Needs to be heard.
Revisado: 09-03-24
This should be mandatory school reading, IMO. So many that endure this behavior that believe it to be okay. So many that bully the less fortunate, unaware of the impact they may make.
Thank you, David, for sharing your story. As a fellow survivor or child abuse and one raised in the system, it hits home. The pride I have in this man is bar none.
