Historia
This national best-seller chronicles the true story of two brothers coming of age in the Henry Horner public housing complex in Chicago. Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers are 11 and nine years old when the story begins in the summer of 1987. Living with their mother and six siblings, they struggle against grinding poverty, gun violence, gang influences, overzealous police officers, and overburdened and neglectful bureaucracies. Immersed in their lives for two years, Kotlowitz brings us this classic rendering of growing up poor in America’s cities.

Give it a listen
Revisado: 12-27-24
Seriously, at least listen to the sample. The title is a direct quote and gives you a hint of how dehumanizing poverty is. Of the cruelty of our lack of any real social safety net. That that lack (and exploited loopholes by landlords/slumlords) creates and expands poverty. The casual injustice of austerity measures that exponentially harm the most vulnerable among us will infuriate you, as it should.

Historia
Famous for his advocacy of "critical pedagogy", Paulo Freire was Latin America's foremost educationalist, a thinker and writer whose work and ideas continue to exert enormous influence in education throughout the world today. Education for Critical Consciousness is the main statement of Freire's revolutionary method of education. It takes the life situation of the learner as its starting point and the raising of consciousness and the overcoming of obstacles as its goals.

Historia
With her characteristic brilliance, grace, and radical audacity, Angela Y. Davis has put the case for the latest abolition movement in American life: the abolition of the prison. As she quite correctly notes, American life is replete with abolition movements, and when they were engaged in these struggles, their chances of success seemed almost unthinkable. In Are Prisons Obsolete?, Professor Davis seeks to illustrate that the time for the prison is approaching an end. She argues forthrightly for "decarceration," and argues for the transformation of the society as a whole.

Angela Davis is always worth a listen
Revisado: 10-27-24
If you are curious or wary by the question this title poses. Sample it. Try a listen. If you aren’t convinced, you will at least know a great deal more about the history of our prison system. And what part Quakers played.
Personally, I’ve never regretted listening to Angela Davis and I doubt anyone still reading my review will.

Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Historia
Award-winning poet Danez Smith is a groundbreaking force, celebrated for deft lyrics, urgent subjects, and performative power. Don't Call Us Dead opens with a heartrending sequence that imagines an afterlife for black men shot by police, a place where suspicion, violence, and grief are forgotten and replaced with the safety, love, and longevity they deserved here on earth. Smith turns then to desire, mortality - the dangers experienced in skin and body and blood - and a diagnosis of HIV positive. "Some of us are killed / in pieces", Smith writes, "some of us all at once."

It is a very quick listen.
Some of his imagery…honestly there were a few times where I had to pause it just to sit with and appreciate some of the lines. Just BRILLIANT. And emotional. And raw. And simultaneously polished. Just an incredible work. Highly recommend.

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

Where are the citations? Why exclude trans data? Why make trans people invisible?
Revisado: 03-07-22
Why were there no footnotes or clear citations. The vast majority of data she sites are described as “a study” and the year. If we are very lucky she will name an author, but that is not the case for a great deal of the data she “cites”. That makes it kinda difficult to trust any data she offers when it is often impossible to verify. There is also a clear bias against trans people. And by clear bias I mean she pretends the those men, women, and non-binary people are not people. Kind of a big deal when you’re shouting from the rooftops that women are invisible, and then you literally make certain women invisible. I am tempted to use the term terf, but I don’t think she deserves the title of radical feminist, only Trans Exclusionary.

Very enjoyable! Pratchett is a fun author to read and listen to :) it would probably be best to enjoy Equal rites, wyrd sisters, and witches abroad before this one, as the story picks up right where witches abroad leaves off.

Picks up where Colour of Magic leaves off, Great!!
Revisado: 07-12-13
What did you love best about The Light Fantastic?
Rincewind's inner monologue concerning his sanity.
What other book might you compare The Light Fantastic to and why?
It is comprable to the Colour of Magic, as it is the next step of the story, the same wonderfully absurd characters, it at least meets all expectations set by the first book, and in certain ways surpasses them.
What does Nigel Planer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Everything that he brought to the Colour of Magic. Wonderful.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed often while listening to this book!! The discussion of descriptive writing was downright hilarious.

Very short, not worth a credit.
Revisado: 06-13-13
What disappointed you about Percy Jackson & The Olympians?
It mainly offered a lot of the same refrains that you find in the Percy Jackson series without enough story to compensate for the repetition of the initial storyline. It doesn't really offer anything new. I just seems like some extra stories that, for whatever reason, he cut out of the main series and do not on their own merit an entire book. I felt cheated.
What could Rick Riordan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Maybe if he put these stories together with the other one, the demigod diaries, and added a few more stories that would be worth a credit. This work felt like a rush job, incomplete and a lot of filler.

Historia
Nowhere is there another lab like Dr. Bill Bass's: on a hillside in Tennessee, human bodies decompose in the open air, aided by insects, bacteria and birds, unhindered by coffins or mausoleums. At the "Body Farm," nature takes its course, with corpses buried in shallow graves, submerged in water, concealed beneath slabs of concrete, locked in trunks of cars. As stand-ins for murder victims, they serve the needs of science, and the cause of justice.

Real world forensic anthropology, bugs and all!
Revisado: 06-13-13
What did you love best about Death's Acre?
Dr. Bass's perspective and clear expertise in the field. He has written more than a few of my osteological textbooks and it was downright fun to hear how he describes his own experiences, how he has accumulated his considerable library of knowledge.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
How Dr. Bass and Jon Jefferson managed to convey the absolute respect that is necessary when dealing with human remains as well as interesting, scientifically accurate, entertaining, humorous and in some cases heart rending situations that led to the need of Dr. Bass's expertise.
