A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. Kept me engaged
Revisado: 02-03-25
Often I find books like this to be easy to predict or difficult to believe. The main characters make choices that don't make sense just to further the story line. This book kept me engaged and guessing. I even found myself thinking about it when lying in bed at night... something I haven't done with a book in years. It had a unique story line with characters whose motivations remained hidden until the very end. Highly recommend.

Good, but not AS good
Revisado: 12-14-22
The next chapter of the story was good, but lacked some of the urgency of the previous stories. Would still recommend!

I love this podcast. It's a good way to start my day and learn from people who are doing what they love. I especially loved the episode with Ashley since I follow her on Instagram. It was interesting to hear how she got started and her philosophy on starting fresh. Listen! You won't be sorry.

Historia
On Midsummer’s Eve, Alinor waits in the church graveyard, hoping to encounter the ghost of her missing husband and thus confirm his death. Until she can, she is neither maiden nor wife nor widow, living in a perilous limbo. Instead she meets James, a young man on the run. She shows him the secret ways across the treacherous marshy landscape of the Tidelands, not knowing she is leading a spy and an enemy into her life. England is in the grip of a bloody civil war that reaches into the most remote parts of the kingdom.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 08-23-21
This book reminds me of why I love/ hate books in this genre. The story is heartbreaking and yet you can't tear yourself away. I really enjoyed this book but did find that it lacks the intensity of some of Philippa Gregory's other novels. It was much more subdued but still kept my interest. The 4 stars is because I had to step away from it for a day to give myself a chance to breathe and not feel so pessimistic. If you are like me, however, that isn't a "don't read" recommendation. I like books where I feel strongly about the characters and this book definitely made me care about the eventual outcome.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Good Good Good
Revisado: 05-19-21
This book was Good Good Good! When you read the book you will understand and I'm probably not the first one to make this nerdy joke. It really was excellent... couldn't stop listening. If you liked The Martian, this will be perfect for you. The story has plenty of science, of course, but not so much you can't follow it. Ray Porter could not be a better narrator for this book. At one point he changes back and forth between a Canadian and American accent flawlessly and I knew it was a Canadian character before he said it. Listen. To. This. Book.

Historia
Beginning with opium, the “joy plant,” which has been used for 10,000 years, Thomas Hager tells a captivating story of medicine. His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

Too Short?
Revisado: 04-27-21
I don't often find myself wishing a book would keep going but this was one of those rare times...I could have heard the back story on another 5 drugs without tiring of it. The author's storytelling was engrossing and deeply interesting and didn't bore me a single time. Definitely a must listen if you are interested in the history of medications as well as the social implications surrounding some of the most widely used and well known drugs!

In the tradition of Orange Is the New Black and Jerry Stahl's Permanent Midnight, Amy Dresner's My Fair Junkie is an insightful, darkly funny, and shamelessly honest memoir of one woman's battle with all forms of addiction, hitting rock bottom, and forging a path to a life worth living.

Confusing
Revisado: 04-08-21
Did I love this book? No. Did I hate this book? No. Was I looking forward to it ending? Yes. I found the storyline confusing as it jumped around. Sometimes she would make reference to something that already happened and I would think, "Wait, I thought we were in a flashback here. " I just couldn't keep track. Maybe that's because I listened in audio form and would turn it off and on multiple times in a day, but I haven't had that problem with most books. Maybe it's because everything sort of seemed like the same over and over (as addiction can be). I'm glad I listened but if I knew when I bought this book what I know now I probably wouldn't have purchased it. It just lacks the details and cohesion I am looking for in a story.

In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders - Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumored Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways.

Makes you thankful for our current circumstances..
Revisado: 08-20-20
I enjoyed this book. It was eye- opening during this current pandemic to realize how much technology and circumstance has changed in our favor. As much as we complain about quarantine, at least for the most part we all have food, water and good medical care.
I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book more than the last as it became a little predictable... but that didn't take away from the meaning of the story. I would have liked to hear more information about the effects of the pandemic in populations other than maternity but that is probably my curiosity as a Healthcare worker. Overall a good book with good narration that I would recommend.

It was the autumn of 1628, and the Batavia, the Dutch East India Company's flagship, was loaded with a king's ransom in gold, silver, and gems for her maiden voyage to Java. The Batavia was the pride of the company's fleet, a tangible symbol of the world's richest and most powerful commercial monopoly. She set sail with great fanfare, but the Batavia and her gold would never reach Java.

Hard to Finish
Revisado: 08-23-19
I struggled to finish this book. In fact I started a new audible story with my husband while on vacation and nearly forgot I hadn't finished this book. I usually love books about shipwrecks and murder but I found it hard to keep all of the characters straight and to remain focused on the book. I liked the narrator but felt the subject was presented in such a dry manner it took all of my interest away.

Two years ago Jane Norton crashed her car on a lonely road, killing her friend David and leaving her with amnesia. At first everyone was sympathetic. Then they found Jane's note: I wish we were dead together. From that day the town turned against her. But even now Jane is filled with questions: Why were they on that road? Why was she with David? Did she really want to die?

Entertaining but not a fan of the narrator
Revisado: 06-21-19
Over all this book was pretty entertaining. A typical sort of fun summer read with good twists and turns. The narrator ruined it a bit for me however. She tended to have a breathless sort of delivery for every line and it made it hard to know what the characters real emotions were. My only complaint with the writing was the fact that the main character (Jane) felt "owed" by everyone. She came across very selfish and self- centered sometimes and made it hard to believe the characters would continue to help her after she treated them this way. I would probably recommend listening to this if you like mysteries without a lot of suspense or gore and are looking for a fun listen where you can be interrupted and come back to it without worrying about forgetting details.
