Another gem from James Herriot

I love every book in this series. He has a lovely way of telling stories that pulls you in and makes you feel you are there. The only complaint I have is that (whether this is the book or the audio version I don’t know) they skip around. So when you are in the middle of the story of when Jim goes to Russia, suddenly you are back on a farm in the Dales and you don’t when, or if, you will hear the ending to the other part.
But I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the narration as well

Not a great series
Revisado: 06-01-24
I never write bad reviews but these were truly awful. I’m sure the author tried but the characters aren’t very likable or believable. She uses language for them that doesn’t fit with their age or way of life ( no foul language, just ridiculous stuff no older person would say). The mysteries are plan silly and easily figured out almost at once. I don’t know when I have disliked a series of books so much. Don’t
waste your time or money.
The narrator is obviously a southern lady and so is the lead character so I guess she was fine for that, but I wouldn’t want to listen to her narrate another book
Sorry to be so negative, usually if I don’t like something I say nothing, but this was a case where I wish I someone had warned me.

Lately, Kate has a lot on her dessert plate. She's launching a cookie-of-the-day challenge in the heart of Coral Cay, providing sweet treats for the reception of the town's handsome new veterinarian - not to mention dealing with tourists in town for a pirate festival and the surprise arrival of her former fiance, Evan, who seems determined to win her back. And if that's not enough, a skeleton has been found - in the backyard behind her best friend Maxi's floral shop. Kate knows Maxi could never hurt a fly.

2nd in the series and not a disappointing one! I enjoyed getting to visit with my “ old friends “ from the first book and make some interesting new ones. I liked that the author didn’t space the time out by very much between the two, so it made things believable.
The characters are wonderfully written and you can fully picture each. The narrator adds to that with her ability to do male and female voices, all aged and even to do accents. Each character is unique, very unusual in recorded books.
The mystery is a fun one, not easily guessed and the whole pirate theme is played out beautifully and realistically for the south Florida keys.
A really terrific read (or listen). You will feel like it went by too fast. I can’t wait to start the next book in the series.

Historia
Kate McGuire’s life was sweet in Manhattan before she lost her restaurant job and fiancé both. But sometimes that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, and soon she finds herself starting from scratch in the island town of Coral Cay, Florida. It has everything she’s looking for: sunny beaches, friendly locals, and a Help Wanted sign in the bakery shop window. Once she convinces the shop’s crusty owner Sam Hepplewhite to hire her, Kate can’t tie on her apron fast enough. Little does she know that trouble, like warm dough, is on the rise.

My favorite new cozy mystery
Revisado: 01-14-24
I really loved everything about this book and am excited that there are 2 more in the series so far. I love the characters, I didn’t find the plot or the mystery to be super obvious (as in most Cozies) and the narrator did a wonderful job with the different voices and accents. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

Revisado: 01-09-24
I thoroughly enjoyed both of Ms. Andrew’s Biographies. While I certainly don’t agree with everything she believes or does, it is a truthful, fascinating picture of a complex life and really gets you into things, both her professional and personal lives. I admire the courage it must have taken to undertake such a project and give her credit further sharing so much so freely. I’ve enjoyed her performances for my entire life and I think her biographies are well worth listening to and/ or reading.

Wonderful feel good story beautifully narrated
Revisado: 09-25-23
If you enjoyed Mrs. Harris goes to Paris and all the wonderful characters in the story, as well as the NY adventure of Mrs. Harris and those captivating characters, you will love Mrs. Harris Goes to Parliament. Although completely unbelievable, it is charming and the characters so love able and kind that you simply root for them. The story is the further adventures of the indomitable Mrs. Harris and her friends.
I will admit I enjoyed the storyline of the first two books a bit more, but this was still thoroughly enjoyable.
The narrator is wonderful, one of the rare talents who can convincingly read both male and female voices, do different accents and make you believe someone is high bred or common folk. She’s an absolute delight and I will look for more of her work.
This is a charming book that will cast a spell on you and leave you feeling better than when you began to read/listen to it.

Another great installment in this series
Revisado: 05-25-23
I enjoy all the characters and I appreciated that while the main story focused on Nora, we still had growth in the other characters and their stories. The mystery was well done, you didn’t completely guess who was guilty from the start. There were some loose ends left, but perhaps those will be addressed in upcoming books?
This series is the typical “cozy mystery “ in that you you don’t have explicit violence or sex and the characters live in a world we would all like to be in, a town where people care about one another and look out for each other.
I happen to love books so this series ticks all my boxes in that arena as well
I felt the narrator did a good job, being a female most of her male characters have a similar sounding voice, but she does try to infuse them each with something different. I think she did a good job narrating and would listen to her again

A fun and fascinating read (listen)
Revisado: 03-13-19
Cary Elwes does fans of our beloved Princess Bride movie more than just a favor with this incredibly delightful reminiscence of the making of the movie, including all of the main actors, the director, the write of the book, etc... adding their stories and memories. It is nice to hear that they enjoyed making the movie as much as we, the audience, have loved watching it (and quoting it!). It is a funny, tender, interesting listen and I highly recommend it. Elwes does a great job at mimicking many of his co-stars, and of course many of them make audio appearances as well. This is a treasure trove of fun and touching facts about the book, the movie, the people involved in the making of the movie, as well as the enduring part this film continues to play in our cinematic history. All I can say is it was “As I wished!”.

Historia
Nora Pennington, the owner of Miracle Books, believes that a well-chosen novel can bring healing and hope. But she and the rest of the members of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society know that, sometimes, practical help is needed, too. Such is the case with the reed-thin girl hiding in the fiction section of Nora's store, wearing a hospital ID and a patchwork of faded bruises. She calls herself Abilene, and, although Nora and her friends offer work, shelter, and a supportive ear, their guest isn't ready to divulge her secrets.

Another winner in this series
Revisado: 03-09-19
I am enchanted with this series. I read a lot of Cozy mysteries, but what sets these apart, in my humble opinion, is the author’s ability to create characters whom I know, love and want to keep coming back to. The very fact that each one is scarred and imperfect in some way makes them so relatable. If there were but only a town like Miracle Springs and people like the ladies from the Secret Scone and Book Society! Ms. Adams has a magical ability to create characters who leap off the page and a plot that doesn’t feel at all contrived. She also has the ability to make both the characters and story a true experience. Many times when you read a book, especially newer ones, the plot is so obvious, there is either so little detail or a ridiculous amount of extraneous detail, that I just lose interest. These stories are crafted so beautifully, with the right balance of each ingredient that makes for a wonderful read!
As with most series of this kind you will have a mystery of some sort that will need to be solved, and while that is important, they way Ms. Adams weaves the whole story, the mystery isn’t the only point as in so many other Cozy books. Even the beloved characters aren’t the only point, it’s a wonderful balance that will keep me coming back for each addition to what I hope will be a long and successful series.
The main four characters are women who each live in Miracle Springs and each have a secret of their own. They have been living very lonely and isolated lives because of these secrets, but when they come together and share them with each other, form a bond of friendship that helps to save each one and help them to reach out to others. In the world we live in it is nice to read about things like this, and I don’t mean to imply that nothing real or bad has happened or will happen, but you are always left with a feeling of hope, instead of despair, for the characters, but also for yourself.
If you enjoy excellent writing, stories about friendship among strong, funny and intelligent women, good storytelling and mystery, then this series is for you.
I truly enjoyed the narration and performance of Cris Dukehart. She does a wonderful job with both male and female voices, she is able to give each character their own unique sound and flavor and has a voice that is pleasing to listen to. She knows how to not just read a book, but to perform it, which many narrators, even with fine voices fail miserably at. I will be looking at other titles that she performs.

Miracle Springs is a place of healing. Strangers flock there hoping that the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. And, if none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent: prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden.

Terrific read, much more than just a “diversion”
Revisado: 10-01-18
I LOVE the cozy mystery genre, so I am not trying to put them down in any way, but I expected this to be the typical cozy and it was SO much more. The development of the characters was so full and time and care was taken to let each one truly come to life. I felt compelled by each of the main four women, wanted to know more and could identify with parts of each of them and their stories. The author also knows how to craft a mystery and not give everything away right up front. She was very good at throwing red herrings in so you kept thinking you knew all, but you didn’t. I appreciated that because I almost always know whodunnit way before the story is over. I liked the balance between the growing friendship between the women and the mystery- both were given suitable time without detracting from the other.
The narrator was pretty good. I wouldn’t say she is my favorite of all time, but she was certainly adequate. If I were to make a specific comment I would say she is weak with male voices, but her voice and pacing were pleasant and I would listen to her narration again.
Overall, I highly recommend this book and the audio version that I listened to. I can’t wait to listen to the next book in this series.
