At first wasn’t looking forward to yet another WWII story. But this historic true story took me by surprise. A real page turner. Highly recommended.

Totally predictable and sentimental sop
Revisado: 02-09-25
I was disappointed with Kristin Hannah’s The Things We Do for Love. Unlike many of her other books, this story feels overly predictable, with a soap opera-style plot and drawn-out sentimental drama. If you enjoy emotional, melodramatic narratives, this might be for you—but it wasn’t for me. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend it.

At first I thought the story would be too cliche. Then read all the reviews and decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did. The writing is original and well done. Highly recommended is the best I can say without giving anything away.

Historia
It is 1873. Mrs. Eliza Touchet is the Scottish housekeeper—and cousin by marriage—of a once-famous novelist, now in decline, William Ainsworth, with whom she has lived for thirty years. Mrs. Touchet is a woman of many interests: literature, justice, abolitionism, class, her cousin, his wives, this life and the next. But she is also sceptical. She suspects her cousin of having no talent; his successful friend, Mr. Charles Dickens, of being a bully and a moralist; and England of being a land of facades, in which nothing is quite what it seems.

Excruciatingly long and boring
Revisado: 05-10-24
This plot meanders without clear direction, which leads to a sense of aimlessness that pervades this boring novel. Overall lack of coherence. "The Fraud" fails to live up to Smith's previous works. It lacks spark leaving us readers with a sense of disappointment. I would return this title if I could but, sadly, Audile won't let me (maybe because it's expected that this book is too long and boring).

A Story of Resilience Hope
Revisado: 03-22-24
Kristin Hannah delivers another engaging historical novel with 'The Four Winds,' a poignant tale set amidst the backdrop of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl era. As a fan of Hannah's previous works, I approached this novel with high expectations, and I'm pleased to say that she did not disappoint.
Set in Texas during one of the most challenging periods in American history, 'The Four Winds' follows the journey of Elsa Martinelli, a woman who finds herself confronted with unimaginable hardships as she strives to protect her family and preserve their dignity in the face of adversity. Hannah's masterful storytelling draws readers into Elsa's world, vividly depicting the harsh realities of life during the Dust Bowl and the desperate struggle for survival.
Hannah's meticulous research is evident throughout the novel, as she expertly captures the historical nuances of the era, from the crippling dust storms to the widespread poverty and social injustice. Through Elsa's eyes, we witness the indomitable spirit of the human heart as she confronts loss, betrayal, and despair with unwavering courage and determination.
This book is a captivating and deeply moving novel that resonates with its compelling characters, rich historical detail, and poignant exploration of the human spirit. If you are a fan of historical fiction, this book is recommended.

An engaging tribute to the women who served
Revisado: 03-22-24
I was completely prepared to dislike yet another historical novel that has a focus on war. As much as I appreciate the significance of historical events, the incessant inundation of war narratives often feels tiresome and repetitive. However, "The Women" pleasantly surprised me, offering a fresh perspective that transcends the battlefield and delves deep into the lives and struggles of the women who served in Viet Nam.
The author's adept storytelling effortlessly transports readers to the heart of the era, vividly depicting the societal upheaval and personal sacrifices demanded by wartime circumstances. Through richly developed characters and evocative prose, "The Women" captures the essence of human resilience in the face of adversity, showcasing the indomitable spirit that endures even in the darkest of times.
What truly sets "The Women" apart is its unflinching exploration of the multifaceted roles women assume during wartime, challenging conventional stereotypes and offering a compelling portrayal of female agency and empowerment.
Through its poignant narrative and profound insights, the novel serves as a poignant reminder of the often-overlooked contributions of women to the fabric of history.
In conclusion, "The Women" is a timeless testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Historia
Masterfully blending elements of psychological suspense and true crime, Jessica Knoll—bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and the writer behind the Netflix adaptation starring Mila Kunis—delivers an “unflinching and evocative” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) thriller in Bright Young Women. The book opens on a Saturday night in 1978, hours before a soon-to-be-infamous murderer descends upon a Florida sorority house with deadly results. The lives of those who survive, including a sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed.

Historia
A provocative and original investigation of our cultural fascination with crime, linking four archetypes - Detective, Victim, Attorney, Killer - to four true stories about women driven by obsession. In this illuminating exploration of women, violence, and obsession, Rachel Monroe interrogates the appeal of true crime through four narratives of fixation. In the 1940s, a bored heiress began creating dollhouse crime scenes depicting murders, suicides, and accidental deaths. Known as the “Mother of Forensic Science,” she revolutionized the field of what was then called legal medicine.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.
