Historia
Jane Austen fan Amelia Bennett sneaks away from a dull tour of an English country manor, only to run into a man more dashing than Mr. Darcy himself. About to lose his ancestral home to family debts, charming aristocrat Tom Calder invites his American guest to join him in drinking his way through the estate’s priceless wine collection. But when they wake in his bed the next morning, they’re convinced that in their drunken haze they witnessed a murder. Problem is, the body has vanished and no one believes them.

Historia
In 1978, when Jamiyla was two years old, her mother, Ummi, quit her job, converted to Islam with her husband, and moved into an exclusive Muslim society in Brooklyn. Once inside the Community, the family was separated by its powerful and charismatic leader, Dwight York, who was hiding behind the name Imam Isa. Instead of the devotional refuge they’d imagined, the Community was a nightmare of controlled abuse and unspeakable secrets. Forty years later, Jamiyla was ready to excavate and understand a past buried in bad dreams, disturbing memories, and inexplicable rage.

Did NOT disappoint!
Revisado: 09-03-23
This book was truly engaging and extremely heartbreaking. I've become a fan of cult bios and podcasts and you don't often get stories about black people who were engaged in cults. This book tore me apart from start to finish because it is the story of a daughters' stunted growth, a mother's desire to keep a family together at all costs that resulted in drastic mistakes, a father's failures, and a family torn apart that eventually somewhat reconciled. Very chilling and very worthwhile.

Historia
The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls. And now the impossible dream has come true. I’m out, we’re all out. We saved everyone. So much for my great-grandmother’s prophecy of doom and destruction. Ha, only joking! Actually, it’s gone all wrong.

Working as a quality-assurance grunt in the gaming industry sounds like fun, right? You get to play the coolest new games before anyone else. And all you have to do is to find, reproduce, and report bugs before the last pixel is locked in and the games are launched to an eager public. Sure, there’s the unpaid overtime, the office politics, and the ever-present threat of layoffs. But you get to game!

Poignant, raw, unexpected. I was not prepared for all of the revelations that came from this book, but I'm glad to have gotten them. I loved how we got a glimpse into a side of Will Smith that we pretty much NEVER see.

Historia
For decades Jason Wilson was losing the war within - the internal battle that many men wage daily but were never taught how to win. As a result, he could not combat his toxic thoughts and emotions. Instead, he was conquered by them and communicated without composure - hurting those he loved and himself. This went on until he renewed his mind by releasing years of past trauma. His life and relationships were transformed when he learned how to master his emotions and express them with self-control. In the process, Jason became a better husband, father, and leader.

This book has helped to set me on a new path. I'll definitely read it again! It brought up a lot of issues for me that I've been trying to ignore and/or just push through on my own for a while now, from not feeling like I'm giving enough in my marriage to personal inadequacies about sex to feeling pressure to start a family. Reading it once is definitely not enough, so I plan to revisit this AND Cry Like A Man. Thank you, Jason!

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

I had read this novel before purchaseing as an audio book. I loved it, love all Andy Wiers stuff. I enjoy listening to stories I've read before for ease when I'm working and familiarity, helps with the anxiety. As such I didn't pay much attention to who the narrator was. IT'S ROSARIO DAWSON!!! The entire time I kept thinking, man this narrator is great, Weir really does pick good narrators. This was wonderful to listen to.

Revisado: 02-17-21
I own this book and the entire series in print. I just wanted to listen while at work. The performance was...less than optimal and the pronunciations and inflections on certain names, gonzago de escabares, really just took me out the story every time. But the book is good. Great mix of sci fi/fantasy and romance, especially as the series continues.

Historia
Camellia Beauregard is a Belle. In the opulent world of Orleans, Belles are revered, for they control beauty, and beauty is a commodity coveted above all else. In Orleans, the people are born gray, they are born damned, and only with the help of a Belle and her talents can they transform and be made beautiful. But it's not enough for Camellia to be just a Belle. She wants to be the favorite - the Belle chosen by the queen of Orleans to live in the royal palace, to tend to the royal family and their court, to be recognized as the most talented Belle in the land.

I was not expecting the twist and turns which elevated this story from just a cute story on beauty to a real critique of obsession, self loathing, and the curruption of power in those spheres.
