Historia
For thousands of years, people have argued about whether humanity is selfish or generous, cruel or kind. But recently, our answers have changed. In 1972, half of Americans agreed that most people can be trusted; by 2018, only a third did. Different generations, genders, religions, and political parties can’t seem to agree on anything, except that they all think human virtue is evaporating.

Urgent challenge with soul nourishment
Revisado: 01-23-25
Inspiring beyond even my hopes. It feels like I was looking at the world through a tiny hole in a door, and that hole is steadily enlarging.

Historia
In American Whitelash, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and best-selling author Wesley Lowery charts the return of this blood-stained trend, showing how the forces of white power retaliated against Obama’s victory—and both profited from, and helped to propel, the rise of Donald Trump. Interweaving deep historical analysis with gripping firsthand reporting on both victims and perpetrators of violence, Lowery uncovers how this vicious cycle is carrying us into ever more perilous territory, how the federal government has failed to intervene, and how we still might find a route of escape.

Well told stories make it even scarier
Revisado: 07-05-23
I’ve listened to several excellent books about the increasing prevalence and impact of white supremacist violence. This book coaxed me to confront it again, making me commit anew to stand with my Black neighbors.

Historia
"Can you believe what Donald Trump said?" In Gaslighting America, Amanda Carpenter breaks down Trump's formula, showing why it's practically foolproof, playing his victims, the media, the Democrats, and the Republican fence-sitters perfectly. She traces how this tactic started with Nixon, gained traction with Bill Clinton, and exploded under Trump. Where some people see lies, Trump's fierce followers see something different. A commitment to winning at all costs: There is nothing he could say that would erode their support at long as it's in the name of taking down his political enemies.

A revelation for me
Revisado: 06-04-23
I love this book. I’m a progressive who follows never-Trump Republicans like Ms. Carpenter. I come in trusting her, so when she’s critical of Democrats, I believe her. And she’s brilliant and knowledgeable.

Historia
The lifeblood of any free society is persuasion: changing other people’s minds in order to change things. But America is suffering a crisis of faith in persuasion that is putting its democracy and the planet itself at risk. Anand Giridharadas takes us inside these movements and battles, seeking out the dissenters who continue to champion persuasion in an age of polarization. As the book’s subjects grapple with how to call out injustices while calling in those who don’t agree with them but just might one day, they point a way to healing, and changing, a fracturing country.

Historia
In 1994, more than 300 Republicans under the command of obstructionist and rabble-rouser Congressman Newt Gingrich stood outside the U.S. Capitol to sign the Contract with America and put bipartisanship on notice. Twenty-five years later, on January 6, 2021, a bloodthirsty mob incited by President Trump invaded the Capitol.

Best history/analysis of GOP’s weaponization of hatred and division
Revisado: 09-24-22
I’ve listened to a lot of books about the GOP and Trumpism, and this is the best. It rejects the GOP as passive victims of Trump voters’ authentic rage, and instead shows that Trump and Trumpism are intentionally created weapons against democracy. Their silence about the evils of this era isn’t just negligent. For some, it’s just reckless failure to act when action is obviously required to prevent massive collateral damage. But for many, notably McConnell, it’s intentional. Trump is the GOP’s bomb, and destruction of democracy is the intended target, and sometimes it causes collateral damage to people the GOP values.

Historia
In her 40s, with two children, a spouse, a dog, a mortgage, and a full-time job as a tenured law professor at Georgetown University, Rosa Brooks decided to become a cop. A liberal academic and journalist with an enduring interest in law's troubled relationship with violence, Brooks wanted the kind of insider experience that would help her understand how police officers make sense of their world — and whether that world can be changed.

I love this book! Ms. Brooks embeds deeply thought provoking (my thoughts are so provoked) justice concepts in a great human story. Bits of wonderful humor make it easier to hear the desperate reality of people who are policed.

Historia
Stuart Stevens spent decades electing Republicans at every level, from presidents to senators to local officials. He knows the GOP as intimately as anyone in America, and in this new book he offers a devastating portrait of a party that has lost its moral and political compass. This is not a book about how Donald J. Trump hijacked the Republican Party and changed it into something else.

Outstanding knowledge and analysis
Revisado: 01-03-21
I couldn’t listen before the 2020 election because I couldn’t face the enormity of the challenge the new/old GOP poses. Now I can appreciate its brilliance, breadth and intellectual integrity. It draws from Ari Berman and Vox as well as a lifetime of right of center perspectives. While I’m a long time leftist, I want to use Stuart Stevens as a guide into a better future.
