Historia
Like anyone who discusses the problems of girls and women in public, Caitlin Moran has often been confronted with the question: “But what about men?” And at first, tbh, she dgaf. Boys, and men, are fine, right? Feminism doesn’t need to worry about them. However, around the time she heard an angry young man saying he was “boycotting” International Women’ Day because “It's easier to be a woman than a man these days,” she started to wonder: are unhappy boys, and men, also making unhappy women?

No , but really ? What about them?
Revisado: 03-11-24
I like to preface this with the fact that I have all of her other books . I enjoy them for the most part and have reviewed them. This one misses the mark for me . And the reason is that it is not a subject that women should be straddled with fixing. The problem with the question is that it is a disingenuous one. The question isn't " what about men?" it is actually , if you are not going to allow us to be the default and always be on top , how are you going to restructure things so that we don't feel like we are losing anything. and that is the f-ing problem with all power dynamics that need to be changed.
In this book she talks about how boys feel like it is easier to be a girl , now. Which is honest but not true. They don't feel like it is easier to be a girl than a boy , they feel that being a boy used to be easier because it was harder on girls . Giving the example that the boys used , rape accusations. Boys used to be able to do what ever they wanted to girls and even lie about the sexual relationships they had with girls , fully knowing that could and would ruin that girls reputation. Now in the new world that could backfire and land the boy in a place where he has to fight for his reputation. This actually makes for a fairer world where it is in everyone's best interest to be honest or at least discreet, but fairness feels like oppression in the world where you used to always come out on top .
The other problems seem to be that men think " I should be allowed to oppress you BUT if we are going to live in a fairer world for you , what are you going to give me for what I lost". Because the men aren't helping the women gain rights but they feel like they should be compensated. If men feel like men's mental health isn't a priority , shouldn't MEN be working on that like WOMEN did ? Women didn't steal mental health from men. If men don't have healthy relationships with each other , why are expecting women to set up men's play dates for them? it's kind of the " why isn't there a straight pride or White Entertainment tv or national Men's day " argument . First there kind of wasn't a need for those things but also if you feel there is a need YOU SHOULD CREATE THAT . Marginalized people didn't wait for their oppressors to greenlight things to make them feel better about themselves. Why do men need us to old their hands? Make your movement.
and lastly the final problem with all of this is that when oppressors make movements, usually , It is about oppression. The men's movement that we do have is not about male empowerment , it's about female subjection . There isn't a powerful voice in male spaces telling men to be vulnerable or whole , or whatever the male equivalent to " SLAY" is , it is men getting together to express how shitty it is that women can talk now , or that they can't hit us anymore or SHOCKINGLY how once a girl of any age has an opinion how they don't understand why they can't have sex with her now . See the weird discourse around Greta Thunberg , for examples. I think if men could follow men that had healthy ideas we would all be better for it.
in conclusion , honestly , good effort but what about men is not a feminist question. What about men belongs in the minds of a world where feminism isn't needed. Where equality of half the world's population isn't still in question. Because as long as men are on top , the idea that we need to be worrying about how they FEEL about the fact that we want to be safe and respected is irrelevant.

Historia
More than a year after she helped save the world from the Sparnaxian invasion, Andrea Vernon is in a good place. Her boss is giving her greater responsibility and she’s getting to travel a lot (although her fill-in is hopeless at making coffee); things could be getting even more serious with her 8’ 4” superhero boyfriend, The Big Axe; and she has a really fun new BFF, Never More. Small issue, though, with that last item - Never More is a supervillain bent on world domination, and it looks as if nothing can stop her.

If you read the 1 star reviews, I need to rebut
Revisado: 02-06-24
Every one star review sight the same thing. The voices . Bahni does a great job , but she is reading for a bird person and for a woman that is a dinosaur. She is giving them characteristic voices for who they are but I get it . A raven would screech , A Deinonychus would also. So I am sure this was the direction. So this may be a book that is better for you to read than listen to if you have issues with loud sounds. Oh there is also Glare or ... GLARE!
The book is excellent though, Me and Alexander or Andrea Vernon herself could be friends. We only diverge on a single opinion , I liked the ending of HIMYM, it is a little forced but Ted was hopeless over Robin . but I digress.
If you were like me and got the first book free, and loved spunky Andrea Vernon and have actually incorporated Ms. O's sayings into your life this is a must read. If you want something silly and funny but also smart , Well all I have to say is there is a Raven named Nevermore that can sense your deepest regret. Seriously . That is enough.
The book series is just good. It is funny, it is smart , it is ridiculous , Give it a chance .

"You'll change your mind." That's what everyone says to Jen Kirkman - and countless women like her - when she confesses she doesn't plan to have children. But you know what? It's hard enough to be an adult. You have to dress yourself and pay bills and remember to buy birthday gifts. You have to drive and get annual physicals and tip for good service. Some adults take on the added burden of caring for a tiny human being with no language skills or bladder control.

Revisado: 08-10-18
I like this book but I don't see this becoming one in my regular rotation. I completely understand how she feels and it's not fair that people want to press on you their expectations. But their places in the book where it crosses the line from being essays to just being pissed off. Those parts are a little less enjoyable in my opinion.

Well written book about terrible people!
Revisado: 06-07-18
If el James is your favorite writer, this is your book. Because it's the same idea. 2 throughly unlikable humans coupling. Now. Daphne Is a much much superior writer and so the book is beautifully written. So if your can lose yourself in language, and the characters aren't that important, this also might be your book. Because from the opening passage, the timeless and often quoted Last night I dreamed of Mandalay, to the ending, it's prose and poetry. But I admit that I need to get behind at least one of the characters. I need to like them or at the very least have a turn around moment where the problem personality says oh wow, I'm not a good person, and changes.
Here. That didn't happen.

Revisado: 10-30-14
If you could sum up Yes Please in three words, what would they be?
Funny, Sweet , Silly
Who was your favorite character and why?
you really need to tailor these questions. My favorite character was biff . WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK ....Amy .
Which scene was your favorite?
The Divorce books ...
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes
Any additional comments?
Bossypants, the Tina Fey book, was probably the best in this genre I will call Funny girls on NBC. Her book was so well put together , so funny and adorable that if I was an essayist that wanted to write a book I would stay far away from that because I would end up stealing large chunks from that book. Why am I talking about TF ? because I think some people are reading this book and going " this isn't like Bossypants AT ALL" ... no .. this is Amy Poehler . This is the white , blonde , non Tina Fey . Although since I love both of these women I kind of dug on patching them together. " I was leaving to go to NY with the upright citizens brigade even though I was told that I was going to be given a spot on the main stage with second city " ... in my head I hear Tina Fey " I was not given this job because I was a woman , I was given this job because Amy Poehler went to NY with upright citizens brigade and I was the next best thing" .
Amy's book is less structured. It kind of comes in at the middle , she had some fun , Patrick Stewart makes an appearance and at some point you start to see the SNL casts lives overlap in a weird mosaic like a time travel Harry Potter book . You pull a guy out of the audience on the and it turns out to be the guy who you do weekend update with years later ...when does things like this happen? But it is funny. Her stories are cute. She cried , A LOT during her SNL days .
She is brash , bolder , she apologizes less and is a little crazy. but she is good. and so is this book

Eh
Revisado: 10-07-14
What did you like best about Not That Kind of Girl? What did you like least?
I remember reading " Bossy Pants" and being delighted from the very first moment. This Book is the opposite of that. It is mostly a sad mosh-mash of psychosis. a young woman that spends most of her time worrying about things that don't make a bit of sense. Filled to the brim with sexual problems, true tales of sex that are not sexy or funny but like walking in on your parents. At the end you just kind of think " well, that just happened" and if you are me , wish you had just waited for the Amy Poehler book.
What could Lena Dunham have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Give a little more and a little less. I wanted to hear about how she got noticed, how she made her show , her movies , something about the success and a little less about dysfunctional sex and fear of everything.
What didn’t you like about Lena Dunham’s performance?
It was ok .. It wasn't terrible.
Was Not That Kind of Girl worth the listening time?
not for me .
Any additional comments?
If you grew up very rich, overly analyzed and a little bit sad , this might make you happy.
