More Peter Ash please!
Revisado: 04-14-25
The interplay between Peter, Louis, and June is just irresistible. The specific topics of youth in peril, homelessness, hopelessness, poverty, and crime set in a backdrop of racism was very compelling. We all should understand that for so many of our young people this piece of fiction is their reality.
The story is both sad and redemptive. Enjoy! 😊

Just the right tone
Revisado: 04-02-25
One of my favorite detective stories. The narrator’s voice is perfect for the subject matter. Throw in the fact that I am from New York and know all the NY places mentioned and the stories feel deeply personal and tailored just for me. I look forward to the rest of the series, as I am a big fan of the author. You won’t be disappointed if this is your genre. Enjoy! 😊

Dave Robicheaux felt the bone-grinding pain rip through his body as the .45 did its damage. Through the agonizing haze that enveloped him, he heard an almost inhuman laugh - the hideous, victorious cackling of Jimmie Lee Boggs - a sound he would never forget. It had started out as an ordinary prisoner transfer, then turned into a blood bath when the convicted murderer got hold of a gun.

This is my favorite so far…
Revisado: 03-12-25
While I love the complexity and nuance of Burke’s prose, the vivid characters are what touches me the most. Perhaps it’s because I’m old enough to remember the post Vietnam era, or that New Orleans is one of my favorite places in the US.
But I believe it is his acute understanding of the complexity of the human condition. He sees our faults, frailties, vices, obsessions, passions, but also our hopes, dreams, and capabilities for goodness and honor. We humans are after all just walking enigmas. I can get lost in the external and internal messages he conveys and they give me hope for us all. Enjoy! 😊

Well, here we go again…
Revisado: 03-03-25
I want to start by saying I really love the author’s work, and the excellent narrator Mr Pierce. However, I’m not sure if it’s me, the author, or the perspective the author expects the readers to have. I personally find it annoying that the main protagonists, the governor and the husband, are so unprepared and squeamish about meeting violence with violence. How many times does someone need to inform you by words or actions that they need to be stopped permanently for your own protection and the protection of your loved ones?
Who in this day and age would pick a 22 rifle as the weapon of choice to defend their home and family? How could you believe yourself a “survivalist” if you haven’t trained yourself or your loved ones? I really find the husband to be 🤔 stupid/gullible/unwilling to accept reality?? Not sure how to characterize him. I just know that I find it frustrating that he makes so many missteps.
I personally don’t think this portrays him as a good person, nor that killing in self defense diminishes your humanity. The drive for survival is part of our human nature, and we are never diminished by self defense or defense of our families. Anyone can disagree with me, but I feel those people are the very ones who will fall victim to the worst is any society. Again, although I like the story I still find the reticence frustrating.
That’s my take. Overall it’s a compelling and well told story. Enjoy! 😊

Bravo. Profound and enthralling.
Revisado: 01-29-25
This is perhaps one of the best stories I’ve ever read, and I’ve read thousands of books. The first person narrative of an alien probe who encounters the worst and best of our species, and becomes a mentor to us.
It was moving in both light and dark ways, and got to the core of who we are with the complications and deep complexities of what makes us human. I was listening from the Plus catalog, but have since purchased it. I expect to listen to it many times in the future.
The writing reminds of the greats like Arthur C Clarke and Isaac Asimov. The narration was sublime, and so perfectly matched for the protagonist. It’s heavy reading and won’t be for everyone, but if you like literature that makes you think, dream, imagine, then this story is for you. Enjoy! 😊

Great survival story
Revisado: 01-15-25
This is a story about real people, with real issues and challenges surviving the end of the world as we know it. However, it is not the story of defeat, but rather the ability of humans to adapt, adjust, conquer their own limits, prejudices, and to come together to form societies.
Their world no longer looks like ours, but I for one can see how this blend of the old and new ways of thinking and acting might be the only way to truly survive the events that befell America the day after WW3. I am particularly endeared to the story because it has a uniquely female perspective. The narration is great too. Enjoy! 😊

That there is darkness at the heart of the Yuletide season should not surprise. Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is filled with scenes that are unsettling. The hideous children - Want and Ignorance - beneath the robe of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. In the finest versions of this story, the best parts are the terrifying parts. Best-selling author and editor Christopher Golden shares his love for Christmas horror stories with this anthology of all-new short fiction from some of the most talented and original writers of horror today.

The story is good, but…
Revisado: 12-26-24
I really liked this story, although I had figured it out from the first few chapters, it was good until the end. The characters are well developed, and the suspense well built.
My only issue with the story is the female protagonist. I was disappointed that a woman writer couldn’t do any better than male writers in designing the main female character.
Why do we women have to be so weak kneed, fragile, and clueless? I’m not saying all female protagonists need to be Lara Croft. Maybe this is the only type of woman the author comes into contact with, weak, dependent, incompetent. This stereotype really insults my intelligence.
I often wonder if it is me who is the problem. I’m single, mature, responsible, intelligent, and definitely would be at least marginally capable of defending myself. Perhaps this is why I’m single?? 🤔. So I offer this review for other strong, capable, and intelligent single women. Just be aware that this is another one of “those” stories. You have been warned. Enjoy! 😊
