MacAvoy hates the Catholic Church
Revisado: 02-07-25
All man made institutions have bad actors but the author seems to delight in using the “history” of the Catholic Church as a platform for airing his grievances against the Church. A Pope with an illegitimate son, a priest who blasphemes and lusts after his female “friend.” I thought these books would be entertaining and I would learn interesting information about the Catholic Church instead I came away disgusted at the author’s twisting of history to meet his personal views on religion.

Historia
In 1982, Italian financier Roberto Calvi, known as “God’s Banker”, was discovered hanging under London’s Blackfriars Bridge. What wasn’t found was the briefcase he was known to have had with him the night before, reportedly stuffed with incriminating documents, a special key, and a computer disk filled with codes, which together unlock a piece of the Vatican’s troubled past. When the briefcase mysteriously reappears in the Vatican Secret Archives, Father Michael Dominic and his team are up against two powerful and enigmatic organizations.

Not worthy of “Historical” Fiction
Revisado: 02-07-25
The author uses the minimum amount of history necessary to make this book fall into the historical fiction category. It is written on a middle school level and disparages the Catholic Church at every possible occasion. A priest who lusts after his female friend and swears routinely, Swiss Guards and nuns who live in an openly gay community within the Vatican, a Pope who has an illegitimate son, and insinuating Pope John Paul is a liar. These books use the Catholic Church as a backdrop to the plots but more importantly to denigrate the Catholic religion. I would not recommend.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Gone Woke!
Revisado: 11-09-24
I’ve read/listened to this entire series and thoroughly enjoyed them, until this book. Every bullet point of the liberal agenda is found here: DEI, transgender, anti-conservatism, anti-catholic, anti-US, climate change, and even delves into US politics. Paired with a new narrator this book seems very forced. Plot was predictable and drawn out. The characters of Three Pines barely played a role in this book except to mention them all by name every time Three Pines is discussed. Not Penny’s best work if it even was at all…

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Waste of a credit
Revisado: 07-25-24
Did someone else write this book? Filled with fluff, disjointed themes, and a slew of meaningless new characters this book is not like the first 3 which I thoroughly enjoyed. It appears authors whose books are picked up by TV series struggle with writing follow up novels. There were so many themes started, dropped, and not resolved. The twins were not extraordinary, Matthew barely existent, Diana’s character unlike previous books so much so that I seriously wonder whether Deborah Harkness actually wrote this book. Time frame was 2017 yet published in 2024 and seemed like it was added on in places to make it politically correct. Narration was marvelous but the book doesn’t deserve 1 star. Very disappointing.

Historia
As time has passed, Dr. Renee Caisson has begun to see the demonic, alien August as more than a research subject or an unlikely colleague—they’ve become friends. And together, she and August have helped the two societies of Nextdoor and Earth through the confusion of first contact, the danger of misunderstandings, and the anger of mistreatment. But when a popular blogger and conspiracy theorist twists August’s words, an uproar ensues, turning a powerful section of human society against the Neighbors—and resulting in Renee’s house arrest.

Mumbled and difficult to understand narration
Revisado: 06-09-24
I will need to go back and actually read these books for a complete understanding. The pronunciation was frequently incomprehensible and garbled. Narration made for a difficult listening experience.

Historia
Dr. Renee Caisson knows there are worse things than an attractive man in uniform drafting her into a secret government project—especially when Major Jackson makes it clear that he isn’t bothered by her questionable past. But when her labs come back with decidedly odd results, the Major is forced to come clean over who the government is actually studying. Renee is shocked to learn her subjects are demonic-looking beings who call themselves “Neighbors”—refugees from a dying world, who arrived during the nation-wide solar eclipse.

Kim Harrison’s imagination and ability to bring it to life via words is nothing short of amazing. Although shorter than most of her books, it was well worth it. Looking forward to the 2nd and 3rd!

Movie over story
Revisado: 06-12-23
When TV producers become involved, the quality of the story steeply declines. This is just another example, in a very long list of authors, who pieced together a novel just for the sake of publishing. There was no story here.

Historia
The death of a ninety-year-old woman with a heart condition should not be suspicious. Detective Sergeant Harbinder Kaur certainly sees nothing out of the ordinary when Peggy’s caretaker, Natalka, begins to recount Peggy Smith’s passing. But Natalka had a reason to be at the police station: while clearing out Peggy’s flat, she noticed an unusual number of crime novels, all dedicated to Peggy. And each psychological thriller included a mysterious postscript: PS: for PS.

Going Nowhere
Revisado: 01-02-22
Although I am immensely enjoyed this book, because of Davina Porter’s narration, this book truly went nowhere and lent nothing more to the Frasier/MacKenzie story but filler. Unlike other books in this series, there was no true story to be told here. Although there are interesting parts, it felt as if this book was written to string the reader along for the outlander series only. In other books there has been a prominent plot, conflict and resolution but that was not found in this novel. This was a compilation of multiple small stories bound together around Fraziers Ridge and the Revolutionary War with a very predictable ending. I had hoped that there would be more resolution from the ending of her previous novel, “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.” Events that occurred could have been summed up in two hours versus 29 hours. I only hope it doesn’t take seven years more for her to write her next season installment to address the plot that should have been resolved in this novel.

Excellent Narration
Revisado: 05-07-21
Kudos to HilaryMacLean for an excellent narration. Other reviewer‘s have complained about the heavily accented Scottish narration. When you pick an audio book written by a Scottish author, with excellent unseen twists and turns, also with a Scottish narrator, one should expect the narration to be accented Scottish and not one’s native pronunciation. This is what I love the most about audiobooks. Not only do you get to listen to amazing stories but you get to listen to them in authentic pronunciation from which the storyline is written. Five stars all the way around.
