Historia
Why is it so hard to get students to pay attention? Conventional wisdom blames iPhones, insisting that access to technology has ruined students' ability to focus. The logical response is to ban electronics in class. But acclaimed educator James M. Lang argues that this solution obscures a deeper problem: how we teach is often at odds with how students learn. Classrooms are designed to force students into long periods of intense focus, but emerging science reveals that the brain is wired for distraction. We learn best when able to actively seek and synthesize new information.

James M. Lang has changed my teaching
Revisado: 05-03-22
This is the third book I have read by Lang, and there is overlap in some areas, but he explores exactly what I wanted to know more about in every book. As a high school teacher who is constantly battling the issue of distraction I was able to get so many great strategies I can use immediately. Also, he helps us to understand distraction in a way most people probably are not aware of. I highly recommend this book to any teacher.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Original and engaging story!
Revisado: 11-07-21
There were so many things that made this a great story. There is the mystery of how Grace found himself in space, what kind of alien he meets is, and how the story will end, and it keeps you wanting to hear more. There are a lot of scientific explanations, but if you like science fiction, that's what makes it good. The ending made me cry, so it's another reason this was a great story. I've listened to all 3 of Any Weir's books but I think it's even better than The Martian.

Historia
Research into how we learn has opened the door for utilizing cognitive theory to facilitate better student learning. But that's easier said than done. Many books about cognitive theory introduce radical but impractical theories, failing to make the connection to the classroom. In Small Teaching, James Lang presents a strategy for improving student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference - many of which can be put into practice in a single class period.

This is written for teaching in higher education, but really could be adapted for younger learners as well. I would recommend this to anyone who teaches.

Historia
Venice Beach, 1996, Ceit struggles with the confines of superstition and tradition that have defined the Society since its start. As her younger brother, Alan, turns 18, Ceit enacts a plan to end the Society for good. In doing so, she will release Alan from what she sees increasingly as a toxic and antiquated way of life and free herself from her mortal ties to the human realm. In 1924, Ainsley Robertson lives in a secluded community outside of Cork, led by her father, an abusive and cruel ceannaire. She’s expecting a baby in a world where being an unwed mother is a criminal act.

I binge listened this in a few days. We learn about how the Society came to America, and how Cait has taken over as their leader. There is amazing detail and never a dull moment. I was able to listen to both books in a row, so it's too bad I have to wait for the final book.

Historia
Ceit Robertson, age 10, is the next Matrarc to the Society, a cultish matriarchal group living in an inconspicuous cul-de-sac in Venice Beach. When Ceit’s mother is attacked by spirits from the old world, a failed exorcism results in Ceit’s exile into the foster-care system in Los Angeles. She eventually lands in the infamous MacLaren Hall, a very real and historically auspicious center for disturbed and abandoned children in El Monte. As Ceit grows into a force of nature, she discovers that the devil might not be what we should truly fear.

Complex and addictive!
Revisado: 01-01-21
The main character, Cait, is powerful, but that can't save her from being a child. Sometimes we can deeply sympathize with her, sometimes we questions her choices. We learn more and more about the Society as the story continues, and the world of monsters lurking in the dark. The first book sets the stage for what I'm sure will be an amazing trilogy! Highly recommended for connoisseurs of supernatural fiction.

Revisado: 01-05-20
This book lays out exactly what we need to understand to change our paradigm of education. There is a lot of backlash for using too much technology, but when will we get backlash for teaching students content or skills that will never be of any use in their future? As head of Ed Tech at my school, the road is long and hard, but when I think about how we can do so much more for our students, books like this make me optimistic and willing to fight the good fight.

The tone is too condescending.
Revisado: 05-18-19
I was really interesting in reading about design thinking, and this book was recommended to me by a design thinking teacher. Maybe I should have read a little more about it before buying it, but it is not really about design thinking, it's about changing your life from the perspective of someone who knows about design thinking. The overall tone, and narration are very condescending. The feeling you get from the writing style is, you are stupid, so you make stupid mistakes, I'm an expert, so let me tell you how to change. I was disappointed.

Historia
Brilliantly executed and compulsively listenable, Unsheltered is the story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum, as they navigate the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. In this mesmerizing story told in alternating chapters, Willa and Thatcher come to realize that though the future is uncertain, even unnerving, shelter can be found in the bonds of kindred - whether family or friends - and in the strength of the human spirit.

I love her work more with every book!
Revisado: 11-04-18
Kingsolver is not only an amazing writer, but an amazing narrator. Every character is explored to an amazing depth, and feel so real. Social issues are explored by showing us how issues are truly affecting peoples lives. I read a lot of her earlier works years ago, but it may be time to reread them. I loved her books so much, I never want them to end.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Lots of details
Revisado: 12-31-17
The story and world are good, but I’m not sure how many readers would understand the endless details, especially at the climax of the story. I hate SF that isn’t scientifically sound but this goes a little overboard. For engineers or the like I’m sure it’s perfect.

Historia
When seven-year-old Jamie falls down a very long hill, he finds himself trapped in a world of strange creatures, harsh landscapes, and near-perpetual darkness. Lost and confused, Jamie is desperate to get home. The nightmares, fears, and all manner of what-ifs that inhabit this shadow world are unfamiliar to him - all except one: the Lairdbalor, Jamie's personal nightmare, once relegated to his dreams. In this fantastical land, however, the Lairdbalor and all the fears and nightmares of children are very real.

Throughout the story, we never know what’s real, what’s a dream, what the Lairdbalor really is and if Jamie will ever get home. This Neil Gaimanesque story is both terrifying and beautiful. I strongly recommend it.
