Revisado: 09-26-24
A different view of invasion & oppression during the Nazi occupation. The characters were built upon nicely. I felt it became overly religious in the last view chapters hence the lower rating.

In early 1943, Magda Ritter's parents send her to relatives in Bavaria, hoping to keep her safe from the Allied bombs strafing Berlin. Young German women are expected to do their duty - working for the Reich or marrying to produce strong, healthy children. Good Story, compelling perspective
Revisado: 12-07-23
As the title says it was a compelling perspective from a non Nazi German woman in service to Hitler, The characters development could have been deeper especially with her love and marriage. There could have been more detail about how average germans survived Hilters reign.

Awesome Historical Novel
Revisado: 12-01-23
I wish there had been a forward explaining the layout of the book, it was confusing to have the audio book start a new chapter for instance saying 1903, then go back to happening in 1900 and 1901. It was explained at the end. Otherwise the story of Ms Cameron and her paper daughters was enlightening, heartwarming and sad at times. I am glad to know about Dolly Cameron and the good works of the mission home and the affect they had on the slave girls of China and Japan.

Amazing story
Revisado: 03-04-23
The characters were woven wonderfully and I fell in love with this family. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, the truth of a family living with mental illness- a disease in which medicine has made progress and society is beginning to understand better. We’ve still a way to go to helping individuals suffering to find a peaceful existence. But like this book, there is hope!

In this “rich, complex family saga” (USA Today) full of long-buried family secrets, Marilyn Connolly and David Sorenson fall in love in the 1970s, blithely ignorant of all that awaits them. By 2016, they have four radically different daughters, each in a state of unrest.

Good story
Revisado: 02-21-23
It was a good story of a family going through the things that families go through. It was tiresome that when family members communicate they never complete a sentence. I mean, you know, I wanted, I never, and they never finish the statement just stammer around. These are supposed to be educated folks. Otherwise it was an enjoyable book to listen and the performance was excellent!

Captivating, Heroic
Revisado: 01-29-23
History, family saga, based on true story. My favorite read in this category. These family members are my hero’s. Never giving up!!! thinking through the problems to possible solutions, against all odds! I was captivated from the start. Possibly because my own paternal grandparents were polish by birth.

Heart wrenching! Heart warming!
Revisado: 01-16-23
Story of courage, loss, friendship and new beginnings during some of the darkest period France was exposed to during WW2. It showed how men and Women process grief differently and how our decisions can come back to haunt us. It was hard to stop listening to the book and take a break.
