Historia
One September morning, Doug accidentally runs right into another surfer on the beach. There are rules about these things. The other guy should call Doug a jerk, Doug should say, "my bad", and they should both paddle back out and move on. Problem is, the other surfer doesn't want to move on. He wants to fight. And for once in his life, Doug wants to fight back.

Nice to see the dawn patrol story tied off (not as nice as ten more volumes though;) and delivered with honest to god laugh out loud moments too!

Even though I already had low expectations, its impressive how underwhelming and mediocre this 10 minutes was regardless…if this is the future AI offers, we’re in trouble…

Good story contrasted with mediocre storytelling
Revisado: 12-28-23
It sure would be nice if more authors would invest a little into the craft of writing and not assume a keyboard and imagintion are enough. This is the kinda story with the potential to really pull you in but you find yourself wishing it was written by a different author…FWIW

Good narration only takes you so far...
Revisado: 12-19-22
Failed story. Maybe there is a plot line and story arc in there somewhere but didn't last long enough to find it. The author fails to paint the picture to draw you in, whether it's camaraderie, or making you feel like your in a space ship and sci-fi reality or next level game immersion or universal political maneuvering ... even the coming of age get a job aspect is weakly executed. Atleast ten realms you could last a couple of books before it gets this boring.

Benny & Joon meets Diamond Age all held together with a little emo-time travel. Well paced with a myriad of characters which are sometimes hard to track but helped by being fleshed out and not just cardboard cut outs.

Historia
Body & Soul is the story of a young man whose life is transformed by a gift. The gift is not without price - the work is relentless, the teachers exacting - but the reward is a journey that takes him to the drawing rooms of the rich and powerful, private schools, a gilt-edged marriage, and Carnegie Hall. Claude moves through this life as if he were playing a difficult composition, swept up in its drama and tension, surprised by its grace notes. Music, here, becomes a character in its own right, equaled in strength only by the music of Frank Conroy's own unmistakable, true voice.

Thankyou Tantor for bringing a classic to Audible!
Revisado: 10-03-19
The papyrus edition of this work has long been one of my top ten:) The audio version did not disappoint.
Just to qualify my glowing review: I’m an introvert male and visual creative. The core of this book is a coming of age story centered around a young boy finding music as his anchor from poverty and a disfunctional single parent family. These elements resonated with me, particularly when coupled with the repeated elements of personal creative growth. The story, nor the main character, are by any means ‘simplistic’. The book deals with race, mixed relationships (in the post WWII era), body image, elitism, McCarthy era FBI tactics, and numerous other issues. The setting is well developed, and makes you feel like you were living in 1950’s New York.
This book is also well recognized as ‘one of the finest evocations of the experience of being a musician’(source: goodreads.com). When the story wanders into the realm of inspiration and breakthru’s, myself and many other creatives would agree, the story rings true.
The ending is rather un-American, ie: we like a climax and happily ever after... But there is closure, and it has a gritty texture reminiscent of many works of literature.
This one is definetly on my re-listen list.
